, does your throat feel like it is contracting or like there is pressure in there when this happens? It could well be spasms. When I get them I normally eat some ice-cream and have a drink of soda. That usually give my throat something to work with and the spasm usually goes way faster. This works for me but it my not work for others. It is kind of like a hit and miss thing till you find something that works for you and gives you some relief.

I was awakened last night (again) with severe pain behind my breastbone. I absolutely cannot get comfortable when this happens and feel like I need to get up and move about. It lasted longer this time than usual. It used to last just minutes. This time, and the last few, it lasted about an hour. Does this sound like the spasms that I've read about on this site? If so, does anyone have any recommendations on how to get relief. It is so painful - it feels like I'm having a heart attack. Thanks for all of your help and support,

Left over food sitting in your throat could be something that triggers a spasm. I have really paid attention to what is going on when I have spasms and that is what mine feel like. My throat feels like it is contracting so hard that it feels like there is something in there. I had the sharp type pain before my second surgery and that was due to the food putting a lot of pressure on the LES and the wrap that was done. Now that my wrap is no longer there I do not have any pain. You might be feeling the LES constricting to the point where you are having the pain.

My son has these and he takes nifediphine for them.I think that

those finally do help him after about 15 min.He says it feels like

what he would think a heart attack feels like as well.He also use to

be able to drink cold water at the first sign and that would stop

them. Some people here drink hot stuff, eat something, even some try

soda. There is a topic on the main board about spasms and what people

do for them.Give that a look up.Hope you find something that helps!

I would say definately a vigourous achalasia - as they call mine. It

started exactly the way you describe. No other symptoms, than years

later.

Sarkku,

That is how mine started too - for about 3 years - just sharp pain behind the breastbone. The swallowing problems started after that, about 6 months ago. I hope the surgery helps with the pain, but from the others, I'm not sure it will.

,

I am new to this forum and thank God that it is here. It is a comfort to know that I am not the only one that feels this way.

I am 31 male. I have had, I think what you are describing, since I was about 12 but didn't know what it was. I could drink something, anything, and it would somewhat pass. I know now in my adult life that it is some sort of gas buildup and usually a drink or two of a diet coke (hot or cold) will help create a belch and almost instant relief. I don't know if this has anything to do with Achalasia or spasms as I have not experienced a spasm. I was diagnosed with A. a week and a half ago and am seeing the surgeon in Tampa Florida on May 1st to set up the Hellers Myotomy. I am hoping that this will also cure this constant chest pain that I have constantly.

I am not sure if this is what you are reffering to or not. My pain is all behind my ribs/chest area and then even makes its way up to my neck at times. It can wake me from a dead sleep and does feel like a heart attack. I have had acid reflux and this is not it. It is way different. Try the soda thing to see if it gives you some instant relief but let you DR know that you are having it. It may be a symptom of something else.

Good luck to you, Jimmy L. Re: Spasms??> > > , does your throat feel like it is contracting or like there is> pressure in there when this happens? It could well be spasms. Jimmy,

I too am fairly new to all of this. I was diagnosed in February. I go for a surgical consult in Cleveland on May 4th.

The spasms - very bad pain behind my breastbone - have been occurring for years. They've become more frequent recently, however. I have heard that it could be from the retained food in the esophagus, or from the LES trying to open.

I'll try the soda. I've also tried honey (another trick I read about). I've also just been told to try large doses of Vitamin B complexes. Having had this pain yourself, you know that we will try just about anything to get it to stop.

The other annoying part of this, that I hope surgery helps, is the nighttime choking and regurgitation. That too has really started increasing for me. It's becoming very difficult to get sleep. My 6 year old (who has an almost phobic fear of vomiting - or watching anyone else vomit) no longer wants to sleep in my room, even though he used to beg to do that. He is afraid of my constant choking.

This forum has been wonderful. Good luck talking to the surgeon. From this forum, it does seem extremely important to get a good one.

Where are you located?

I am located in Florida. I was recomended to go to a Dr. at USF in Tampa. They got me right in. The Barium and Monomotry wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The Dr. was very throrough and was able to diagnose almost instantly. I am going to see a surgeon named Dr. Rosemurgy who has supposedly done 650 Heller Myotomy's. His office also was able to make me an appt very fast and I hope to have the surgery over the summer. I have had all the same symptoms as you describe below starting with Bronchitus like symptoms just before Christmas and almost every night since I have had issues somehow or someway. I have been put on Lunesta just to get a decent nights sleep but doesn't work every time.

Good luck and hopefully we will both have good news to share soon.
