The Russians use this to decrease the craving for alcohol and protect the liver against cirrhosis. May not be available in the United States. Natural Enemies: sunlight and water. Best Sources: brewer's yeast, whole grains, sesame seeds, whole brown rice and pumpkin seeds. No US RDA established. VITAMIN B17 (Laetril) is a controversial compound (benzaldehyde and cyanide) made from apricot pits and used in cancer treatment. Unapproved by the FDA because of its cyanide content. Best Sources: small amounts are found in apples, peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries and apricots. Not approved by FDA because of cyanide content. VITAMIN C (Ascorbic Acid) is a water soluble vitamin measured in milligrams (mg). It is excreted quickly so it is important to take time-release tables or take it three times a day. Vitamin C is an antioxidant required for tissue growth and repair and adrenal gland function. It aids in the formation of collagen, protects against blood clotting and bruising, helps wounds to heal and aids in interferon production. It is required for the metabolism of folic acid, phenylalanine and tyrosine. Natural Enemies: cooking, heat, light, oxygen and smoking. Best Sources: citrus fruits, green and leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cauliflower, potatoes, sweet potatoes and berries.
