Guest guest
, it's called fenugreek. You should be able to find it at a health food store. Also, drink lots and eating oatmeal can help. (I hate oatmeal but love oatmeal cookies) Sherri OT: Breastfeeding concern Ok I had my wisdom teeth out this week and left my 4 month old with my mom and wasn't able to pump enough milk for the day so left some formula. Anyway..I have had to supplement a little with the meds they had me on...I am concerned that my supply is down...how do I get it back up? Isn't there an herb that is supposed to help? (starts with an F?) I really don't want to stop nursing yet. (not for a long time and certainly don't want to go to forumula, yucky) I am trying to get my fluid intake back up. I wasn't allowed to drink any water the day of the operation..it just made me puke stuff up anyway....I have been nursing her as often as she wants but she acts like she isn't getting enough....Ok have rambled enough..I am sure you get the point. Guest guest
fenugreek also blessed thistle and red raspberry drink lots of pure water nurse, nurse, nurse (remember, demand=suppy the more baby nurses, the more you produce) may take a few days every bottle you use will decrease your supply Kathy > Ok I had my wisdom teeth out this week and left my 4 month old with > my mom and wasn't able to pump enough milk for the day so left some > formula. Guest guest
LOL Tami, believe me I don't have time to make cookies either. Mrs. Fields is my " best " friend! Love those Oatmeal raisin cookies. It definately has done the job for me, when I'm worried about having enough milk for my growing boy. I eat a couple of those cookies and a day or so later, I've got more milk than he's got appetite! Guest guest
Sounds like you have the right idea! Drink, drink, and drink some more! And drink water (put a lime or lemon in it... good little detox aid and it makes it not to plain)! Many time simply dehydration is overlooked with milk supply issues. Avoid anything with caffeine, and sugary processed drinks. Nursing on demand is excellent!! It may take a few days for your supply to come back up to meet demand, but keep at it. Not sure if you family bed, but night nursing allowing for round the clock nursing is a great way to boost supply Herbs that will help increase supply are (in order of most to least potent): Fenugreek Fennel Alfalfa Nettle Blessed Thistle Dill Good luck, and don't give up! Remember to eat good, and get lots of rest. Liz From: pkoschak@... I am trying to get my fluid intake back up. Guest guest
FENUGREEK is supposed to help get milk supplies up. If you are concerned that you are not producing as much as she needs and are going to need to continue to supplement then I would suggest you pump a few times a day until the supply increases. I only suggest this since you are obviously already familiar with the pump. When a little one goes through a growth spurt it can sometimes take up to 4 days to see an increase in supply, and it sounds like a similar situation for you right now. And yet moms don't usually need to supplement during the beginning of a growth spurt. Are you sure it's milk she wants and not just mommylove? Maybe a log would help; is she really wanting more than you have to supply? Is she wanting to nurse more frequently than before you went in for surgery? If so then it may be for comfort; to regain trust that you will be there for her. I am NOT advocating not feeding her if she is hungry. I am suggesting that the way in which you supplement can be made to be as close to actual nursing as possible. Also try to nurse her along with each supplemental feeding as that will stimulate your milk supply. Don't let someone else give her a bottle if you are trying to go back to exclusive breastfeeding; you give it and hold her like you would when nursing. Guest guest
Hi , I would go along with all that Kathy has said here. I'm a lay breastfeeding counsellor in the UK and the advice we give mums who have low supply after something like this is take your baby to bed for a weekend, and do nothing but breastfeed, rest, sleep and eat. Forget your housework - let someone else look after you for a few days if possible. If not, leave it anyway. Wisdom tooth extraction is debilitating enough, and you could do with the rest. Fenugreek is excellent for boosting supply, as is blessed thistle and fennel. But at the end of the day, the quickest and most effective way to increase your milk supply is to feed your baby. She is the best stimulant to your supply and you will also be providing the reassurance and comfort that she may need after being separated from you. If you are still on meds, they *may* decrease your supply a little, but it shouldn't take long to build it up again. Usually 48 to 72 hours of " babymooning " is enough. Kathy is absolutely right that every bottle will decrease your supply even more, and as formula is so much easier to get at than breastmilk (no work involved for baby) they can sometimes refuse to go back to the breast if bottles become too familiar. Dump them as soon as you can. Or sooner! Can I just add a word of caution to the drinking advice? Yes, you need to drink, but drink to thirst, not to a specified amount. If you drink more than you need, you will end up " waterlogged " and this will also have the effect of reducing your milk supply. Hope you feel better very soon. Best wishes, Sue > fenugreek > also blessed thistle and red raspberry > drink lots of pure water > nurse, nurse, nurse (remember, demand=suppy the more baby nurses, the > more you produce) > may take a few days > every bottle you use will decrease your supply > Kathy > > > > > Ok I had my wisdom teeth out this week and left my 4 month old with > > my mom and wasn't able to pump enough milk for the day so left some > > formula. Guest guest
I can't think of the name of the herb, but I think that as long as you keep on nursing on demand that it will build back up on its own. I am sure someone on the list will know what you need to take to help. Hang in there! : ) Sunflower,(So.
