Yikes! I hope this article is from the early 80's.......from its NON people

first language ( " mentally retarded children " , etc.....) to its

" groundbreaking news " that kids with developmental delays can be included in

regular classrooms, it smacks of what I HOPE is a woefully outdated viewpoint.

If this is a current news article, then shame on the state of Connecticut and

on the person that wrote the article!

This sounds like the same old arguments that were around years ago

with the first talk of " mainstreaming " . It's kind of like the " not in my

neighborhood " remarks. Of course, there have to be accomodations, you can't

just take a 10 or a 15 year old kid who has always been segregated and stick

him into a regular classroom to sink or swim. I also noticed the DS

" sufferer " . I think it's great that these parents are doing this and that

the state has agreed but------. Jessie

Oh, just save it. Perhaps it will become fashionable again.

I was taken aback by that DS " sufferer " too, Jessie. If suffers from

DS, she's not letting on and none of her physicians hasn't mentioned it. :^)

It's current--from the fox news (? ;0)) website, as I recall.

Typical journalistic effort--the person who wrote it knew nothing about the

issue, didn't research, and relied on a biased source (ed establishment) for

information that was never questioned or verified.

Exactly so--I especially disliked the automatic assumption that behavior was

a problem with any student with MR/DD and the sufferer junk.

Sounds like Conn. educators are looking for a way to derail the whole thing

by negative propaganda about sped and students with MR/DD.

Unfortunately, a whole lot of the same people who have Inquiring Minds in

the USA Today, granny. Too bad there's no law that mandates a hard

journalism vs pablum label on these sheets.

Egad! Who on earth watches Fox News? It's owned by Rupert Murdoch, for

pete's sake. The most destructive force to responsible journalism since the

advent of National Inquirer.

Ditto! I was really bothered by the line, " Down Syndrome sufferer. " I really

hate it when they say that!

S'truth, Judy! But we have only ourselves to blame. As long as we're

satisfied with getting our news in sound bites with no detail and more

interested in sex scandals associated with our politicians than the issues,

we get what we deserve.
