" Mommy, Mommy...come here, quick. You gotta see this, "

excitement, anticipation, and a child's innocent wanting dancing

in her eyes, on her face, as she drags me to the TV. " See, see,

see. You gotta tell Santa. That's the baby I want. "

And that makes it official. Christmas is on its way.

I guess I have it lucky, my daughter like all five year olds is

fun and easy to buy for – if it's a Barbie or a princess doll or

a Care Bear you've got gold.

The only thing is I can barely believe that she's five. Tomorrow

she'll be 18 and in college. Really. She's already planning for

the day when I'll be a grandmother and she'll have five babies

of her own and three dogs and we'll all live here and...Enough.

Let's just worry about college for right now, okay?

Wow, my baby in college. I can already see it. I'm trying to be

realistic, not romanticize it overly much. It's hard not to –

all the new experiences, the classes and lecture halls, the crisp

fall air blowing through the leaves of the stately oaks that have

shaded countless generations of idealistic faces. Ah, college

life...but like I said I'm trying to be realistic.

College campuses are like cocoons or at least that's how they

feel when you're there and a part of the busy life. It's when

you're older and you look at that world with new eyes, a

different perspective, that you can really see what a college

campus is – indeed it is a place of possibilities, but it is

hardly safe and nurturing like a cocoon or a nest. It is a

society within a society and sometimes the harsh realities of the

bigger real world society slither in.

Crime on college campuses is a reality. We all know that. People

steal, people fight, and people hurt each other. Unfortunately,

even at school. That's why there are campus police departments.

Each year colleges and universities are required to report their

institution's crime statistics broken down into categories, but

guess what? Date rape isn't included, it's almost like it's

not a crime at all.

Unfortunately, too many campus police departments still have

archaic points of view when it comes to date rape or sometimes

called acquaintance rape – if the girl knows her attacker than

it's not a crime and no one else is in danger, no harm, no

foul.

Fortunately, I'm not naïve. Incensed maybe, but not naïve. So

like I've always done, I will prepare my daughter for an

eventuality that I hope never comes. But not to prepare her would

be even worse than the outdated attitudes held by some campus

police chiefs.

Wow, a strange train of thought to be having...Christmas presents

for my five year old daughter to date rape in college. Well,

perhaps, a little.

But like I said, I try to be realistic. To some I may appear to

be fey, but when it comes to my daughter, I plan ahead – she is

my baby after all.

So believe it or not, I already know what I'm giving her for her

last Christmas before she leaves for college. It is the most

perfect gift that I can think of – a ring. It's not just any old

ring although it is pretty; it is a ring of protection. And no, I

won't call it My Precious. It's just a really cool ring with

the capability to make any aggressive boy cool his jets with some

serious temporary pain.

Called the Stunning Ring, this ring actually contains pepper

spray which is a great personal protection aid.

On second thought, maybe, I will call it My Precious.
