Colleen did not contact any press, she wanted to see how IKEA would handle it.

Many of us beleive that they handled it well. What is needed now is a little

time to see what that do. If the promises they made aren't kept, or aren't

acceptable, then further action can be taken.

CA law states a woman may breastfeed anywhere she is legally allowed to be.

does anyone know the specific (CA) law that they were referring to in

the letter? does it state that a woman has a right to breastfeed her child

anywhere that she is legally allowed to be or does it state that there needs

to be a specified place where she can go to feed her child?

does anyone know if the woman who was involved in this incident contacted her

local newspaper and television studios? i know we had a similar incident

here in NY (albany) last year and it was covered by the tv and newspapers.

there was a nurse-in at the mall right outside the store who asked the woman

to leave. the fact that IKEA had their lawyers handle the matter and offered

her $250 in gift certif's, makes me wonder how worried they are about

negative publicity?? i know she's probably not looking to start any trouble,

but i just wonder what else can be done to make this a much bigger headache

for IKEA? the bigger the impact is on them this time, the less likely they

are to let it happen to anyone else again, kwim?

also, does anyone know the specific (CA) law that they were referring to in

the letter? does it state that a woman has a right to breastfeed her child

anywhere that she is legally allowed to be or does it state that there needs

to be a specified place where she can go to feed her child? i mean, who

wants to be shut away in a little dark, dirty room (ok--i'm speculating here,

but probably attached to the public bathroom, i'm sure) to feed their kid?

i'm just wondering if the law specifically states where you are allowed to

breastfeed--is it anywhere or only in a designated place? it sounded like

IKEA was saying that they would provide an " area " where she could go to nurse

her child--how 'bout wherever the baby is hungry?? anyone know?

Well, they did also mention a mother could nurse anywhere and as for me, I

rather sit to nurse but have done both! Sometimes that baby refuses to

nurse discreetly and I hate it when my not-so-perfect breasts are exposed!

LOL And sometimes I'm not wearing a sling(she's so light we carry her) or a

nursing freindly top. I would go there to shop! And there will also be a

bottle station so no one is discriminated(could be breastmilk) and for dad's

or other caregivers to feed child. I'm wondering if it will be nice or a "

little closet " and if it's at all stores or just that one. Keep us updated!

Don't know about law. They didn't have to offer any conveniences at all but

are and I think it's admirable. Next time, I'd say " Feed 'em to the dogs! "

I personally thought their response was prompt and attentive. As for the room,

it is IKEA--let's hope they do it up right!

I live in Woodbridge, Va. We have an IKEA at Potomac Mills Mall. That IKEA

has a " nursing room " that is actually good sized. There is enough room

there for a family to go into for a time while baby eats. I think that they

have actually called it the " family room " .

my question is--what if you chose to nurse your baby as you walked around the

store--would you then be asked to go into the family room? do they still try

to make you take it out of sight, as if there's something wrong with it?

now, i'm sure most states are different, but that's why i wa asking about CA

law--in NY, i can nurse my child anywhere that i am legally allowed to be, if

i can be there, then they can be there and they can eat if that's what they

need to do--why do i need to go 'away' somewhere out of sight? i don't see

people giving their kids a bottle being asked to go take their baby out of

everyone's sight so it can eat...kwim?

I wrote earlier that CA state law says we can BF anywhere we are legally

allowed to be.

Also, the IKEA letter states: " to ensure that any mother may freely nurse her

child at any other location within the store. "

I'm in CA and did nurse Trenton in a few stores - never got any funny looks

or anything even sat once or twice on a bench in the middle of a mall, most

times though I preferred to go into a fitting room to feed him - he used to

flap around and make it all to Visible for my liking - I'm a little shy!! 8)

www.mothering.com has the discussion of this issue. It was here, I believe,

that the nurse in idea started. The discussion is somewhere on the
