Hi all - haven't been here in awhile but being back reminds me how

helpful/supportive this group is for managing samters and also an

awesome source of information.

just how good is this site? I saw a new doctor today and he's

supposedly dialled into samter's management, but there's little he

told me that I could find here had I bothered to check this before I

went.

He wants to put me on 2400mg zyflo (600x2 twice a day). I know you

can't really compare medicines but 10mg singulair vs. 2400mg zyflo

seems worth an ounce of caution. anyone with experience with zyflo,

what is your typical dose and have you had a better response with

zyflo than singulair?

He also prescribed a new nasal spray called Omnaris but I haven't

tried it yet. I'll see how it goes and report back.

He also added mucinex, wilson's solution and alkalol. I've had

successes with mucinex before and only used wilson's solution once

after surgery. I'd never before heard of alkalol but it's a refreshing

eucalyptus/peppermint nasal wash and at $3/bottle (OTC) seems like a

real bargain.

thanks in advance if anyone has insight/experience into zyflo

I had a better response to zyflo than I did to singulair. My dosage

was 600 mg 4 times a day. That was hard to keep up. I believe they

have made an extended release tablet. Maybe that is what you are

looking at for only twice a day. Zyflo and singulair are similar in

outcome but take different paths. I am one of the 20% that has no

luck with singulair. If you are seeking relief, then try it. If both

drugs work, Singulair is a safer choice.

I have no experience with Omnaris or the 's solution. Tell us

more.

I was not tolerant of alkalol. The menthol was a trigger for my

asthma. I use the past tense because I haven't had an asthma attack

in a year or so. There are many things that I still avoid and many

things that I no longer avoid.

Your doctor sounds experienced with Samters. Let us know how you feel.

My understanding was that both eucalyptus and peppermint are very high in salicylate... which we're allergic too. Won't that exascerbate the symptoms?

Does anyone on the group use these highly smelly things without problems arising? I've avoided them forever... maybe I shouldn't be...

Just for the sake of precision, being allergic to salicylates and having an

aspirin-

exacerbated respiratory disease are not automatically related all the time. The

reason is

that aspirin is not simply salicylic acid, but acetylsalicylic acid, which

breaks down into the

acetyl half and the salicylic half. One may have both, or just one of the two

conditions. The

only way of knowing if you have both is by watching for Samter's symptoms after

consuming salicylate-rich foods (assuming you do not take corticoids or

leukotriene

modifiers, which would tend to conceal effects).

Zyflo works better for me and i like the 'up to 4 pills a day' dosage

(2400mg)- 2 to 3 a day works fine for me and that's nice since my copay

is $45 - i can go almost 2 months on one's month's Rx. I have even

been on both zyflo and singulair together and that worked well too (but

expensive)....best of luck!

Thanks for this note! I am taking both of them and after last week's posting I stopped the zyflo until I could talk to my doctor about this. They do seem to work well together and the side-effects just dont seem to matter when I can breathe. (Bad thinking, I know.) Have a great Monday!

One of my main problems is that I commute on a train to and from work and because I cannot smell, it conceals cologne or other smells that make me start start coughing and then it is too late.
