Guest guest
Biologist Ray Peat PhD is the author of PMS TO MENOPAUSE: Female Hormones in Context. (1997) PROGESTERONE IN ORTHOMOLECULAR MEDICINE (1993) " Ray Peat's Newsletter " and other works. http://www.efn.org/~raypeat/ _____ -- " Is the Iodine Skin Patch Test valid? " -- In October 2003 I asked Ray Peat PhD about this due to his many years of hormone related researches where iodine was a key factor in his focus. Peat replied: " The people I have seen administering the iodine skin test use the brown tincture, and time the disappearance in seconds and minutes. They think they are measuring a sort of tissue-hunger for iodine, but what they are really measuring is the reductive capacity of the skin surface, most of which is probably ascorbic acid, that simply bleaches the iodine into iodide. I always have tincture of iodine to use on dirty injuries, and I agree that the concentrated iodide solutions sometimes do remarkable things, ... " (Oct. 21, 2003) _____ I understood him to mean 'Tincture of Iodine' but I admit his phrasing was open to other interpretations. So I emailed him for clarification: Pat: " Back in Oct 2003 you wrote re the iodine skin 'test'. You stated: 'The people I have seen administering the iodine skin test use the brown tincture...' Were you referring the iodine product commonly found in drug stores under the name/s: 'Iodine Tincture' and/or 'Tincture of Iodine'? " _____ Peat replied (Jan 22, 2006): " Yes, the standard drugstore brown tincture. " _____ [Pat: So we are all talking about the same thing: " Iodine Tincture " and/or " Tincture of Iodine " A 'tincture' in pharmacology is a medicine consisting of an extract in an alcohol solution. 'Iodine Tincture' and/or 'Tincture of Iodine' refers to " A tincture consisting of a solution of iodine in ethyl alcohol. " ] _____ Pat (a further question to Peat): Any reason for the reference to " brown " in discussing iodine tincture? Is " brown " significant in some way? Are the other color iodines where the color is relevant? Peat (Jan. 27, 2006): " The brown just indicates the presence of molecular iodine; the iodides are clear.
