If your child has open ulcers, it might be. Try low dose of AFP

Peptizyde, see if that works.

No-Fenol is good for vitamins.

There is a typical adjustment period of about 3 weeks, so it might be

that.

Is this the version of Zyme Prime with papain/bromelain? If so, try

the SCD version without those ingredients.

Sharolyn,

When I asked Dr. G about enzymes several years ago, I was told not to use

them. If I remember correctly, he was concerned that there might be

something in the enzymes that might be a negative trigger for my son's

immune system. I think he may have said something about being worried that

even if the enzyme worked and did its job that it might not neutralize

everything and so it was not a good risk to take. I was asking about

Peptizyde by Houston Nutraceuticals.

Sharolyn,

I give the AFP Peptizyde (for protein; does not contain papaya like

Peptizyde does) and Zyme Prime (for carbs) for infractions.

I give No Fenol every day b/c my son eats a lot of fruit.

Do you all only give when there is an infraction? or everyday?

We use digest & /or digest gold from enzymedica. For probiotics we use

lactobacillus sporogenes by Thorne and Lactobacillus Rueteri by

Nature's way.

We have used both the HNI and Kirkmans Enzymes.

They both work fairly well, but my feeling is that the HNI are a little

better.

For Pro-Biotics we have used Multi-Foods Mega Flora, also Kirkmans.

I like the affect of the Kirkmans better, but you need to use 2 at a time to

get what I consider similar results.

Virastop and Candidase from Enzymedica, but I did not use these to

address food issues.

I used Natural Factors brand, from my local health food store.

HNI has more variety.

Some kids do better with HNI, others with Kirkman.

It also depends on why you want to use them.

Possibly. Don't forget the B12 along with the folic, if you are using

the folic to prevent the hyper generally caused by the DMG.

Shan,

We were never successful trying to ease our son into the diet ... he

would just hold out to eat until he got the forbidden foods .... When

I decided I'd had enough and just got rid of everything in the house

that was forbidden ...anything that he was allergic to we deleted all

at once ... it took about two days of misery ... and then voila ... our

son started eating. He now eats so well it is frightening. We never

ever have him refuse foods anylonger... its like we have a new

child ... one that is growing and thriving ... always before getting

our son to eat was a real problem ...

I'll never look back ... its been good.

He has told me that if someone needs the enzymes, they really should not be

eating that food/those foods.

I have heard this from other sources, as well.

That said, we have enzymes on hand for occasions when my son does have

gluten (special occasions, like birthday parties when he gets cake).

I personally use enzymes b/c I have a lot of problems digesting common foods

without them.

I've read wonderful things about Dr. Houston's products Peptizyde &

others. I put my daughter on peptizyde for her dairy allergy. The

theory is that it completely digests all the proteins in the stomach,

breaking all bonds between amino acids, so if the child has leaky gut

there are no large protein molecules that pass through, triggering

the immune system and other sensitivity problems. The peptizyde does

allow my daughter to have dairy without having problems and she does

seem to be losing her sensitivity to it. See www.autismcoach.com and

http://www.enzymestuff.com/basicsproductguidelines.htm

Also, have you heard about the lyme-and-autism group? A lot of kids

whose mothers had lyme when they were pregnant and were born with

autism are recovering from the autism after being treated for lyme.

It appears to be a symptom of prenatal exposure to lyme, among other

things. They're having a big conference in CA with wonderful

speakers, coming up soon.

Dr. Houston impressed me several years ago when I contacted him about his

enzymes for our Asperger's son. When he heard we were primarily following

Nourishing Traditions he told us to " save " our money - to try NT out for at

least six months, and then if we needed tweaking, to give him a call, but he

said NT should " do the trick " . He gave me the clear message his products

are for those who eat a primarily processed food, standard American diet.

Anyway, I loved the fact he's not out just to sell product hand-over-fist

but really seemed to have a moral compass on who he and his products are

trying to help.

Is the NT diet helping your son?

I got the idea after reading Darman's story about how he and

his son recovered that maybe part of the role in Dr. Houston's

enzymes is that they break out all the amino acids, and the autistic

children actually are deficient in some aminos, maybe due to lack of

ability to digest proteins properly. Because was reporting the

same type of benefits from giving his son massive amounts of free

amino acids as the people in the enzymes for autism group were

reporting from the peptizyde, which is the one that breaks down

aminos. So I'm guessing that maybe both together would be even

better - enzymes and NT diet.

Hi,

I started my 6 year old son with autism on the Houston enzymes after 2 years

gfcfsf. They are the only enzymes I have tried. We tried going off the diet

last year and had problems about a month after and went back on the diet. We

have slowly weaned him off the diet again and it's been two months without

problems. The school is very cooperative too as they give the enzymes with every

snack and meal. Our lives are so much better and easier and he's happier. I

wish I tried earlier. He did go through an adjustment phase the first couple

of weeks but after showing progress on the diet and now even better off, it's

worth the money.

ones we have now work well for general digestion issues, but don't

work for my son for occasional gluten and casein meals with enzymes.

I've heard some kids don't do well using any enzymes to take the

place of gfcf diet, so maybe it's that with my son too.

the WORLD of difference for us, and they are tailor made for the

needs of our children. So, I guess it depends on what you are using

the enzymes for. I know that I would do better, probably with the

Houston Enzymes, as well, but I honestly can't afford it! I have my

ASD son on Houston, and one of my NT sons, as well. That pretty much

breaks me right there each month, but the improvements are SO worth

it! ( in BOTH of the boys!) Something to think about . . .

Hi Marilyn,

Extremely quick primer on digestive enzymes. Amylases work on carbos,

proteases work on proteins, lipases on fats. Your saliva produces pytalin (sp?)

also known as salivary amylase (works only on carbos. different from my most

revered dog, he produces proteases). Therefore mixing your food with saliva

during the chewing process is very important. The stomach produces HCL (a

major, major issue) and pepsin (remember Beeman's gum?) which work on proteins.

Liver produces bile to emulsify fats. Pancreas produces all three (known as

tryptin, Chymotryptin, and pancreatin). This is your bodies ability to digest

minus the until now unmentioned factor of yeasts and bacterias within the

digestive tract that do some of it for you also. Raw foods contain a lot of

these. All enzymes are destroyed between 113 and 126 degrees f.. therefore any

cooked or processed foods are devoid of those which are naturally occurring. We

did not " evolve " eating cooked foods. They did not appear as a major source

until perhaps the past 10,000 years and even more so over the last several

hundred. Therefore supplementation with enzymes when consuming cooked or

processed foods may be wise. As I said in my resent response to Fred, Dr.

Howell's works are classic. Also try " Smokey " Santillo, the ND who

spearheads NSA's juice plus (all marketing with some good digestive enzymes).

Hi Dave~As we get older we are supposed to be deficient in these

enzymes, especially if we eat animal protein. How do we get enough of

them? I know that eating lots of raw foods gives you enzymes, but is

it enough for the meat eater? I an vegetarian and have fish a few

times a week, and my diet consists mostly of veggies and fruits and a

few nuts and seeds. So I'm probably okay, but what about the person

who does eat alot of protein. If people really do need help breaking

down their food, what do they do? I think it was Hulda who said

that, too, but that it might be better to take the risk if you need

them. Confusing for sure.

OK, now that I have mentioned a nasty, one of my favorite supplements;

digestive enzymes. Yep, aspergillus orzea and aspergillus niger. Guess

what kind of lung conditions can be " caused " by members of the

aspergillus family.) They can and will, reek havoc upon the flora and

fauna of your digestive tract at a minimum. If you take them, be

prepared and make the necessary reparative plans.

>>But the stimming started. He used to do the hand flapping alot, but

that was the extent of it. Since the enzymes, it has increased plus

he's added a few more things, like, making sure all the doors are

closed, if they're on cracks, or flinging the cabinet doors open,

getting things and putting them close to his face, turning on light

switches and fans. He wasn't like this till we started. Will this go away?

At my house, flapping and OCD were eliminated with B vitamins,

anti-virals [OLE, Virastop, vitamin C, lysine], and yeast control

[biotin and GSE].

What my son needed for language is written here
