Generally speaking, they're enteric-coated so that they reach the small

Hi . I use plant based ones. I think it is a personal preference, but I

could be wrong. I notice when I take ones that have ox bile in them I have

stomach pains. Plant based ones increase my energy, improve digestion and

reduce allergies. I have taken amylase in summer and managed to stay hayfever

free. Without it I had major hay fever.

Subject: ENZYMES

What's the difference between supplementing with enzymes that are " plant "

derived ... and enzymes that are " animal " derived?

Which is best?

What kinds of enzymes are people in this group supplementing with?

Hi, Tina, I don't have any experience using enzymes, but I did

order some from Houston Nutraceuticals today. I chose that company

because on all the message boards I have come across everyone seems

to get good results. Their website is

www.houstonnutraceuticals.com if you would like to go there. And

once you explored their website you can e-mail Devin Houston (the

president/CEO) if you have any questions and he will personally e-

mail you back. Good Luck.

From everything I've read on this board, everyone is most happy with

Houston's. We are on Houston's AFP Pep and couldn't live without

it. My ds had a bad reaction to ZP though, so we're trying Carbo by

Enzymedica. What foods are you trying to deal with and what symptoms

are you trying to alleviate Tina?

From: " Bernadette Czernik " <czernib@w...>

I am one of the unlucky few that can't take any enzymes. I tried

three different products, and I soon after was doubled over with

severe stomach pain and development of heartburn soon after. The

heartburn take awhile to go away. This was even with a much lower

dose than the bottle said. I am trying to incorporate more raw foods

instead. Is the no pheno enzyme gentle? I am afraid to try it.

Bernadette,

The only enzyme products that our daughter has been able to tolerate

are the pork based ones - no pineapple or papaya etc. anything.

She is using Thorne's DiPan 9(non prescription) and Ultrase MT28

(prescription) with no negative reaction and more normal looking

stools. We could only use no-phenol in tiny amounts(a fraction of a

capsule) without seeing a meltdown, so we quit. The 'sleepy' numb

extremities were a BIG problem for her until about 10 mos into

chelation and then those complaints went away. She still is a huge

yeast factory so I didn't relate that to yeast but...

Tammy,

I've said this before but the person who claims someone has a mild form of

any of these ASD kids has never lived with them. They have their own challenges

which at times seem incredibly huge.

Anyway, I, too have an AS son. We did the diet for four years before finding

out about Houston Enzymes. The Kirkman enzymes did not work for my son. Even

with being very strict on the diet for four years, my son had a rough six week

adjustment period to the enzymes (but I knew there was no going back to the

diet). The first week of the diet can show what appears to be regression as you

mentioned due to opiate withdrawal. The same thing can happen with the

enzymes. However, the end result of the enzymes is so great and non-limiting (of

course, you need to remember to carry them with you at all times). Just don't

limit yourself to three weeks especially if you are seeing some small positive

changes along the way.

I use ZP myself, especially when I go to restaurants. Works great

for me. Many times I add No-Fenol also. I usually don't use it with

AFP or Pep, altho for your child, if not gfcf, that might be a good

idea.

Selena,

When I got interested in enzymes, I joined the autism and enzymes group

/

I was so lost with all the posts as I needed the basics.  Anyway, I ended up

buying a book that was awesome as it laid out the basics but answered all my

questions too.  The author also has a website that has tons of basic info about

enzymes.  Here is the website with the info.  You can also see the book (I

bought the version for those with neuro conditions) I am talking about on her

home page:

http://www.enzymestuff.com <http://www.enzymestuff.com/>

Here is an excerpt taken from the above website about what enzymes do:

<<Each type of enzyme has a special function and works in a particular way.

Enzymes are essential to every aspect of life and carry out all the daily

biochemical functions. They are the basic elements that activate all functions

in the body, facilitate reactions that build compounds from the body’s raw

materials, transport elements throughout the body, break down substances, and

eliminate many unwanted chemicals in the body.

Enzymes are chemicals that facilitate other chemical reactions. Food itself is

essentially just a mixture of chemicals that are broken down by enzymes. The

released nutrients are the raw materials. Vitamins and other nutrients cannot

work in the body by themselves. They require enzymes to transport them

throughout the body and make use of them. Enzymes unlock the benefits of

vitamins, minerals, proteins, and hormones and put them to work in the body.

Enzymes are the workers and assist many biological, chemical, and metabolic

reactions, but are not ‘alive’ themselves.

Sometimes particular enzymes need certain vitamins and minerals in order to

function. Magnesium participates in over 300 enzyme reactions. These additional

elements are called co-enzymes. A co-enzyme may give the enzyme the

three-dimensional structure it needs to create the ‘active site’ necessary

to perform its catalytic function. If a needed co-enzyme is not available, the

enzyme will not function.

<<<end quote>>>

Here is a link to frequently asked questions as I am sure many of you are

wondering WHY supplementing with enzymes is necessary.

Sounds like you may want to add the enzymes to a cold drink and give her a

few slurps before she anything and return it to the fridge. Enzymes are good

for about 4 hours this way. My son was and still is a grazer.

We Just started my 3yr old daughter on Peptizyde and zyme prime. She

has also been GFCF for 10mo with improvement. Should we just give

them before meals or before meals and snack. When they are three they

seem to eat frequently. Concened if I give just before meals the

enzymes may not cover snacks.

Do I not want her to drink the whole thing before she eats or sip on

it through out the day. How much enzymes when mixed in a cold

drink. I am new at this .She attends preshcool from 9-3 M-F during

the week where she can't grazes as mush but on weekends she does. I

just don't want to give her to much or not enough. They seem to be

working. I am just trying to find a balance. Thanks for the response.

I had to give enzymes with everything my son ate, whether it was a

meal or a snack. You might want to try that, to see if it causes more

improvements.

Well we had dumped the diet on the day the enzymes arrived so I was giving

more rather than less. However long the drink lasted - he was getting a full

Pep and a full Zyme in each one. If she likes to drink, I would work up to half

a cap of each in the cup.

Hi

You will find oodles of info on s site

_www.enzymestuff.com_ (http://www.enzymestuff.com)

I highly recommned the book advertised there also. Yes enzymes (HNI) may

help with behaviours, have a look at the site and come back to us with questions

:)

Hi, My name is and I have just joined this group. I am trying

to find out more information on enzymes. My daughter, is 10

and diagnosed with PDD. She is on Abilify and Risperdol for

behavioral problems. She gets very violent at times. She is also very

obese. The doctors tested her twice for Prader-Willi Syndrome, but

both times it was negative. Does the enzymes help with behavior. She

can say about 30 words and is learning new words all the time. We

still haven't had much luck with potty training and he Depends are

mounting up. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. I've just

recently been seeing alot about enzymes and wanted to know which

would be the best to try. Thanks,

Hi ,

The enzymes helped or daughter. We started them when she was 12. They have

helped with behavior as far as improving her ability to focus. She just

generally seems happier. We also have almost no tantrums or upsets now and she

is able to handle transitions much better.

We also give her Zoloft to help with anxiety, and that with the enzymes made a

big difference in her school experience this year.

I'd say give the Houston products a try, but start slowly and don't be surprised

if you have an adjustment period.

One common side effect of Risperdal is overeating and obesity. So it

is likely this issue is caused by the medication.

For many kids, yes.

I use HNI enzymes for my family, they work very well for us

I purchase enzymes through www.houstonni.com. What we notice when my son

doesn't have his enzymes is that he is stimmy and his humming comes back.
