Hi ,

I was banded in January of this year, and prior to being banded my

reflux was so bad that I had started taking Protonix. Great stuff!

The pills are small so you shouldnt have any trouble getting them

down. Talk to your Dr about it, they are prescription.

I'm also a bit concerned about the amount of reflux youre

experiencing. Have you had your band checked? Excessive heartburn

and reflux are typically big signs of a slipped band. Have you had a

fluro done? If not, I would strongly suggest it.

And finally, what types of foods are you eating? There are foods

which are acidic that will make heartburn and reflux worse.

Tomatoes, garlic, oranges (juice) to name a few. I have also found

that breaded or fried foods give me heartburn.

Anyway, get that band checked and let us know how you're doing.

Has your doctor determined why you're having reflux before writing you

a prescription for Nexium? My hubby had an endoscopy then was

prescribed Nexium. I've only had a case of reflux once and it was

because my pouch was slightly dialated. Doc removed the fill for a

few weeks and let my stomach rest. After getting refilled I was fine.

Has your doc checked your band position? Best of luck, hopefully your

doc can figure out what is causing this.

Hi,

I found being too tight caused all my reflux. I've been banded almost 4

years now. I did elevate the bed; first a used a large wedge shaped shape, but

later found elevating the bed front with two cinder blocks and wood helped more.

Refux will eventually cause the band to slip, at least it did in my case. I had

the band repositioned. I found personally that the medicines like Nexium didn't

help at all because the food was just in the esophogus and not the stomach. I

am completely unfilled right now and just watch my diet. I think most people

are lucky to lose the 80% of their goal, that was what has been my experience.

I am happy, and about 20 lb over weight, but I am 60 and content to look

grandmotherly. I fit into 14s and can buy off the rack fairly decent looking

clothing. Good luck, but watch the reflux. Plus it is yukky and will only get

worse.

Hi Kem,

My doc only asked if I have had reflux in the past. I told him yes,

during my pregnancies. He seemed to think that it wasn't from the

band and made no efforts to have me do an endoscopy or fleuro. I

wonder if I should insist on one of these tests. It seems as though

my pouch is emptying really slowly. I will usually have dinner

around 6:00 and sometimes I have a snack or two at night, but while

I'm sleeping I still feel and sometimes " taste " the food in my

stomach or esophagus. I really don't want to be unfilled, so I'm not

sure how to approach this. Maybe just insist that he check my band

position? Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi Sue,

I had been filled up to 7.0 on a VG band in the spring. I did feel

too tight at the time, but just put up with it. It has let up some

and I do feel that I can eat more now, so I'm confused as to why the

reflux has showed up in just the last month or two. Is it just the

after affects of being too tight previously? I've even thought that

maybe it was part of becoming premenopausal. I hope I don't have any

slips and as I told Kem, maybe I should just insist on the doc

testing before just prescribing a PPI. Congrats on your success. I

am 46 and will probably never have a body that is

not " grandmotherly. " Size 14 is awesome, I'm just starting to fit

very tightly into an 18. Getting very anxious to start buying

clothes off the " normal " rack, but without my band being in good

condition I don't think it will ever happen.

Hi,

After I've been banded a few weeks I can always eat more than at first

banding. But as you lose the weight the band also loosens up and needs to be

tightened...I personally don't think and endoscope will show anything but if it

has slipped. I'd just hang in there, try elevating the bed, not eating before

retiring and watching the acids you do eat. My reflux was so bad I could always

taste everything, no matter the time of day, it just sat there. At night

sometimes it would " errupt " through my nose and mouth and awaken me! really

yukky. I kept throwing up so much too. that was the reason the band slipped I

think. BUt I'd throw up, sometimes, on purpose at night just to get rid of the

esophogus food before bedtime to help with the nighttime reflux...NOT a good

idea! Try what I suggested and see if that helps. If it is a little reflux,

just once in a while, I'd bear with it and not do anything else.

Good luck.

I thought I would share my reflux issues. Usually after a fill I will

develop reflux for a week or two until I get adjusted to the tighter

band again. This last time it was really bad the first week, I looked

at my habits and totally eliminated eating after 7:00 pm. Not only did

it help the reflux but I'm beginning to see progress in getting the

weight down a couple of pounds, I had been at a plateau for quite some

time. I was also popping Mylanta and finally bought prolisec otc, which

really seems to be helping. I think I'm going off of it after this

course and will see if it (reflux) stays at bay. I think that as the

weight goes down my band loosens up a little and life gets easier till

it gets too easy and then I have to get another fill. I'm really

feeling good about things lately, I am 18 months out, have lost over 60

pounds and actually squeezed by behind into my 19 year old daughters

stretched out size 7 " s yesterday!! Novw I will have to admit that there

was a tad bit of " overhang " at the top of the low cut jeans but Damn! I

could actually fit in them AND zip them up without too much physical

distress. I was floating around like an complete fool, feeling good

about the way I'm looking. Now my next mini goal is to drop another

five or so pounds by the Middle of November for my big 50 birthday.

Yeah ME!! Hang in there with the reflux and watch what you are eating

after 7:00 or so, it can make a big difference.

Lee,

First, congrats on your weight loss success! I'd kill to be in 7s! (I'm a

10-12 but I'm pregnant so the 7s can be my goal for summer 2007).

I had reflux for the first time after being at a comfortable 6.5 fill for

several months. I was losing, but miserable because of the reflux. I was tight

in the morning and couldn't eat or sometimes even drink until around 10 am -

food wouldn't go down well until around 3 pm (late lunch) and then I'd try to

have my dinner around 7, give it time to digest and wash it down with some water

around 9, and be in bed by 10-11, but I was still having the reflux. I had to

have an unfill due to pregnancy, but would have had it anyway due to the reflux.

For those of us who have trouble eating early in the day, it's hard to not eat

in the evening. I hope that after my delivery, I'll be able to refill enough to

lose weight, but not so much that I have to suffer from reflux.

Regards,
