Hi, I was banded on 1/3/06 and the first week I lost 15 pounds and

then I put 3 back on and then this last week I have lost nothing. I am

having trouble taking in my protien shakes and just want to eat

everything in sight. Yesterday I broke down and ate a whole can of

chef boyardee spagetti and meatballs and then a piece of toast with

peanut butter and jelly and about 3 hours later 1 scoop of icecream. I

figured i took in about 1,000 calories yesterday and was really

excited to step on the scale hoping that i would see a loss because i

didnt starve myself yesterday only to see that I somehow gained 4

pounds!

I know Im not suppose to eat until next week but i was concerned about

my very low calloric intake. I was so very supprised I could eat that

much. Is this normal??

I get so very jelous of my husband when he exercises every morning

because of sharp shooting pain in my port and my stomach shaking

around I find it impossible to exercise. Im starting to cry and wonder

if i didnt make a really big mistake

I am getting so very discouraged could someone please give me some

advice?????????

-- dear, you need a fill soon. Who is you Surgeon and when

does he/she allow a first fill. You might want to call him or her and

see if they can offer dietary or medical support to help curb your

appetite. Your a winner, you went ahead and had this surgery, it's

just a little niche in the road. You won't remember this a year from

now. P.S. You might want to try a hard boiled egg or other high

protein choices to offset this hunger. joanne in seattle

You shouldn't be trying to excercise (except for walking) for at least 6 weeks

after surgery. So you still have awhile before you should be doing anything

other than walking!

I believe the reason you are able to eat so much still is partly because even

though you have your band on now it really doesn't begin to assist you as a tool

until you have a fill (which won't happen until 6 weeks either). You have to

try and just use your own abilities to make the right food decisions until you

start getting fills.

This is all coming from information I have read on the message posts. I

personally didn't have this trouble in the very beginning. I still didn't have

a desire to eat until about 3 weeks after surgery. However my doctor is very

strict and wants his patients to be on liquids until 1 month after surgery. He

is very extreme and that is not the norm.

Try and eat meals that are more of a runny texture and start with your

proteins. I remember some of the first foods I ate were chicken in a can and I

would mix it with a little bit of mashed potatoes. The chicken is a great

source of protein although the potatoes aren't really good for anything but they

helped me get full. Always try and eat foods higher in protein first, this will

help to fill you up quicker.

Maybe change up your protein shakes a little for some variety. I'm not sure

what kind you are using but there are many on the market including ones that are

similar to fruit drinks.

What you are feeling is totally normal. Try real hard to go through the file

section of the group and

find different more exciting things to " eat " during this phase of your journey.

Please try and keep

the food demons at bay... " Eating " is not good for you at this stage. Your

stomach has just had

surgery and needs to heal. If you had a broken ankle, you would let it heal...

so pamper yourself

at this time.

You need to put the scales away... ok? No scales should be allowed during your

healing.

Each day should be looking ahead, not behind.

You should base your exercise on YOU not on your husband. Do something today

that you didn't

do yesterday. Even 2 minutes. If it hurts? it might be to soon.

You will get to the point of fills, and of restriction. that's when the band

works.

You are feeling the way we all did just after we were banded... so dry the tears

and smile, you will

soon be in control of the rest of your life !

Hi ,

You are normal. Try varying your intake a bit more,

maybe putting protein powder in tomato soup for

example. I couldn't stick with protein shakes either.

However, your breakdown yesterday was only one day and

needs to stay that way for now. Your intake yesterday

caused your stomach to churn much more than it should

so far into your journey if I am right. Start over

today...I speak from experience. I set out to be good

and allow myself only one portion of popcorn which I

smuggled into the theater last Thursday. However, I

forgot the cup I was going to dump my share into.

Nobody I was with was interested in my " healthy "

popcorn...so I proceeded to eat all 3 regular portions

which equaled 6 bandster portions. And, yup my weight

shot up...not the next day but in a couple of days.

It's back where it was after 6 days. We all do less

than perfect stuff and regret it later. I've had two

fills so was surprised I could eat that much and not

be sick. But my body didn't think it was funny and I

paid in water retention and weight gain. I'm avoiding

movies until I can behave. I actually have good

restriction. Just shows you can get around it if you

want to.

So, don't beat yourself up. Don't give up. You can

make it thru the next few weeks. Keep hydrated. Eat

the foods allowed. Eat as much calorie free or low cal

as you can when needed " something " . Get plenty of

protein to stave off hunger. Find activities other

than food to occupy time. Walking was all I could do

at first until port pain ended. Keep posting and

reading. Pray. I've sent one up for you.

Have you had your first fill? If not, and I expect not, you are not banded,

you have no restriction. This is the HARDEST part of the journey. Your job

now is to concentrate on healing. Stick to your liquid diet as prescribed.

Heal. And then get your fill. Then you will feel the difference. Don't lose

hope!

Lots of people will reply -- this is just the first few weeks for you -- you

need to heal and then get adjustments/fills ... and then the tool will start

doing what it's supposed to do. Your surgeon should have prepared you with some

informatiopn regarding the few weeks post-surgery -- we all go through this.

Some people lose weight during the 6-week " healing " phase and some people gain

.... it's okay!!!

I'm 4 weeks out, have no restriction, but I knew to expect this. It will get

better once you get your first fill (after about 6 weeks). I don't think you

should be eating the solids foods you're eating. I was on liquids for 2 weeks

and then mushy foods for 2 weeks ... you want your stomach to heal and the band

to settle into its correct position.

Hang in there -- schedule a fill -- and give it some time ... you didn't do

the wrong thing!

Debbie, I suggest that you join our parent list,

SmartBandsters . That list is where questions such as

yours are more likely to be answered by a variety of people. This list,

, is a specialty list and is more for discussion of local

events, announcements of support group meetings, etc. Good luck with

your band, you will do fine with it!

Hello,

IM pre-op and my DR put me on a Opti-fast diet. Which means all I get each

day is 5 8oz cartons of liquid protein drink a day. However; I did talk him

into letting me eat salad too.. (just plain lettuce nothing on it) and he said

I could have veggies like green beans. But the idea of this is for me to

loose 20 to 30 pounds before surgery... Now.. if I can do this anyone can. So

please don't eat nothing your not supposed to. Remember the first two weeks is

only liquid.. There is a reason for this.. like the other lady said.. it's all

about healing right now. They don't want your new tummy to be moving around.

They want it to be still and not be working. You can make your band slip.

(which means the stomach will come out around of the band) then you did all of

this for nothing. I know its hard. And im sorry your hungry.. but if your

hungry then just have some more broth.. or whatever it is that you can have.

And

think of the outcome.. think of all those heads your going to turn when this

is all over with.. think of all those things your going to beable to do when

you loose this weight.. you did the right thing by coming to the group and

asking for help.. we are all here holding each others hands.. and yours too..

Good luck.. and be strong.

, If you know you are not supposed to be eating yet then why are you?

We all have enough calories (fat) on board to hold us over for time to heal from

our surgery. You are putting your band in jeopardy by eating to soon. The

first six weeks are not about losing weight they are about healing. You have no

restriction in your band so yes you are going to be hungry, it is suggested by

others to stick to what is o.k. to eat at this time and if you are still hungry

then have more. But only the food you are supposed to eat. It is hard in the

beginning until you start getting fills but just think of it as a meal at a

time, a day at a time. If you can avoid getting on the scale it would be better

so you are not getting down in the dumps by the numbers. If you need to do so

once a week around the same time of day and it would be a more accurate reading.

When I got my band in and I was self paying the last thing I wanted to do was

mess my surgery up by eating the wrong

foods. The last thing I want is to have my band slip or have other problems.

I followed the rules so the healing could take place as it should. Each day is

a new beginning and if I had a bad day yesterday, today I start fresh and new.

The gift you gave yourself is a good thing and in time you will be glad you did.

Best of luck on your journey.
