hi Bhaw,

There are three brands of organic low fat cottage cheese I've tried

from my Whole Foods - 's, Horizon, and Cascadian Farms. I use the

's Organic low fat cottage cheese. It does have a lot of sodium

in it, but it's from sea salt, so that's at least a better kind of

salt to have, rather than regular table salt. I like the taste better

than the Horizon or Cascadian organic brands.

take care,

Carol

what brand of cottage cheese do you use? Cottage cheese available at

whole foods, etc seem to have so many addiditives in them and are high

in sodium.

The problem with flax oil is how it turns rancid really fast, and can be

fairly rancid before it's detected by people.

What I've heard is that IF it's been pressed as coolly as possible and

shipped and stored refrigerated or frozen, it still needs to be used within

about a month of pressing and within a couple of weeks of opening as long as

it is kept frozen.

It's much safer to fresh grind the seeds at each use, tho that wouldn't work

for the baby.

We learned about this and quit using it for my daughter and myself back in

1998.

Flax oil

I am new to WAP/Nourishing Traditions and I am just beginning reading

the book. Can anyone explain the role of flax oil in this diet?

Previous to this I have been giving it to my baby and taking it

sometimes myself for supplementation.

actually i have also ground flax seeds in a blade coffee grinder and

it gets fine enough to put in yogurt or pureed foods. It's never been

a problem. any other comments welcome.

I grind flax seed with wheat to make flour. I put 6 cups of wheat and 1 cup

of flax in the Whisper Mill, mix it together (because straight flax seed

makes the grinder jam up--ask me how I know), and then turn the mill on.

My youngest is allergic to flax seed oil of all things. (She's allergic to

other things too.) That allergy made me mad, since I was trying to be

healthy, after all. But she's fine with cod liver oil.

Don't worry that she's not able to have flax oil.

Since she is ok with CLO, you can try fish oil, which is high in EPA and DHA.

Fish oil is much superior to flax oil when it comes to these essential fatty

acids.

I believe flax oil only provides ALA, which is a precursor to the long chain EPA

and DHA

and most people cannot make the required conversion.

You ladies are on a roll. TY! I wont give up my selenium!!! or C or

E. I could forgo the rest I suppose, maybe. I heard today too that

selenium is a precursor to thryorid. I am cautious of the thryoid

supplements, so suppose it a good thing I at least supplement with

selenium. Maybe on a rotating basis. Will have to look at this

closer.

To answer your question , or not :) from my limited scope of

antatomy and physiology...ATP has to do with the biogogy of the cell,

the energy production. Of note, I could not do the budwig diet

either as the cottage cheese reaked havoc with me. That and I had

done flax seeds for years and this prior to the cancer diagnosis. I

think I am one of those people who can not process it and as such am

using borage oil for the GLA, EPA/DHAs from fish oil and cod liver

oil. I have been loosing weight and have uped the doses on those and

looking into a good source of organic, grass fed, open range meat.

I have problems with the flax as well probably because I have no tolerance for

fat, as I don't eat any. I stopped eating meat 18 years ago and get heartburn

whenever I eat anything that has fat in it. I also gained 5 lbs in a month just

from having 2 tablepoons a day of flax oil, I can imagine what would happen if

I had 8? no, can't and won't do it. It is constantly recommended here to do that

but not everyone can tolerate such enormous amounts of fat! How much fish oil do

you take?

Can anyone give me a link to a good place to buy organic cold pressed

Thanks!

Traci,

You can buy flaxseed oil from iherb.com. I use Jarrow (32 oz bottle). I've also

used Flora.

Another word on flax oil, many words actually, that will pretty

thoroughly strip off the health myths about this oil.

Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is

thought to be a 'good' omega-3 oil; however, more recent science

has revealed that it's a common but faulty assumption that ALA is

physiologically equivalent to omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA

and DHA, and that there is no known need for alpha-linolenic acid

(ALA) independent of its conversion to EPA/DHA.

In adults the conversion rate is tiny; the US Environmental

Protection Agency has posted this powerpoint presentation (slide

5) that explains less than 1% conversion of ALA to EPA (some

sources say somewhat higher), and <0.01% to DHA.

http://members.shaw.ca/duncancrow/Budwig-diet-revision.html

Though these details have traditionally escaped the followers of

Joanna Budwig and Udo Erasmus, fatty acids expert Dr. Floyd

Chilton fully explains them in his book Inflammation Nation.

Chilton says (page 97), " I wish I could tell you that the (ALA)

in flaxseed oil could replace wild fish as a rich source of EPA

and DHA but the scientific literature simply does not support

this contention. ...We do the conversion but very slowly, and we

also eat a lot of fatty acids such as LA that 'compete' for

enzymes that convert ALA to EPA and DHA, further limiting its

conversion. "

This competition is most pronounced in the common condition of

low EPA/DHA and higher omega-6 fatty acid intake seen in the

modern diet.

Budwig and her followers including Udo Erasmus also purport flax

oil might somehow supply the needed fatty acids to rebuild cell

walls so they can carry more oxygen and etc., by supplying ALA;

however, cell walls actually contain negligible ALA and are high

in EPA and DHA.

This explains why for more than maintenance you may need vastly

more EPA and DHA than an ALA supplement can provide, and why fish

oil supplements are more popular for inflammation. For these

reasons flax oil seems a less brilliant choice for biological

support in humans than it did 50 years ago.
