Sorry,

This is one of those urban legends that runs rampant on the internet.

It is NOT true. Check it out at http://www.snopes2.com and click on 'Toxin

du Jour', scroll down til you get to the line for canola, and read on. It

reprints the original (false) posting that's been circulated around the

internet, and then debunks it.

Hi , there was a whole lot of scare-mongering stuff

circulated on the Internet a while back but it really, truly is

garbage and there is no risk to using Canola oil. Take a look at

some of the Urban Myths sites - www.stopes2.com is usually pretty

good - for an explanation.

Canola is made from the seeds of the rape plant. (Brassica napus var.

oleifera) It's readily available in grocery stores in Canada. I just

bought 3 litres today for $5.99 Canadian..very inexpensive. I use it for

cooking often.

Janette,

Thank you for sharing that with us.. Any suggestions what can be used for

mayonaise? I wonder if soy-onaise is acceptable? I know it is the vinegar that

we aren't suppose to have..except cider ..Baggs Brand of vinegar is excellent..

Except for we non-secretors of course since canola is an avoid for us.

Canola Oil

Dr. Enig's original article is found here:

http://www.westonaprice.org/know_your_fats/conola.html . I have

reviewed her article and references on more than one occasion. My

opinion on the matter is that canola is an excellent choice for

mayonnaise, salad dressing, and other cold applications due to it's low

2:1 omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio and high omega-9 content. I

group it in the same category as walnut oil, as far as application. It

should never be used in cooking. Also, non-GMO, expeller-pressed canola

should be used exclusively. Dark containers such as those used by Omega

Nutrition (http://www.omegaflo.com/) are preferred. Dr. Enig is known

for her opposition to unsaturated fats and support of saturates. I

believe that, based on the current research, she overstates her case.

While saturated fats form an important component of a healthy diet, so

are mono- and poly-unsaturated oils, especially the

super-poly-unsaturates found in flax, fish, and algae oils. The key is

balance. I think Dr. D'Adamo would agree.

Dr. Weil might recommend canola oil, but he also constantly tells

CFIDS patients to exercise and says in one of his books that sickness is a

manifestation of evil. He is a moron who did too many LSD experiements back

in the '60's.

Canola oil is recommended by a lot of people but this definitely seems open

to debate, due to the genetic altering issue. It seems to me that the very

best oils for CFIDS patients are all cold-pressed oils -- mustard seed oil,

cold-pressed coconut oil, olive oil, flax seed oil, etc.

Peggy

<<Yes, I have read this. Seems that Canola oil is actually rapeseed oil which

is genetically altered. I have been avoiding it, but I am confused because I

just listened to some health tapes by Dr. Weill and he recommends it

as being a good oil

like oilive oil. Endless confusion abounds in nutrition circles, it seems.

Hi Girls,

I don't think they would be able to sell it as food grade if there was

something wrong with it. Don't forget there is so much disinformation out

there, don't just take one example, research it thoroughly then make up

your own mind as to what to do. For me, I love canola/ rapeseed it helps

with the tangles in my hair so is in all my s/poo bars.

You should go to http://www.snopes.com/ and do a search on canola.

This is a site that publishes the truth about urban legends and scare

stories. It's also a good place to check out computer virus scares.

Fiona----I believe i read it in my local newspaper months ago. it was

scary! they said that canola oil was used to grease garage doors and

other types of uses like that! I wish i had saved the article. All I

know is the article said never to use it in foods ~it was considered to

be a " dirty-oil " ! so that did it for me....like i said it was months

ago ~my husband read the article too and agreed with me to toss it in

the rubbish~and ive never bought it since and never will! So I will not

use it in my products either!!!! But just like the debate over Mineral

Oil we had here---its a matter of choice! So its up to the individual i

suppose. But this individual will never use it again! HTH~Misty

I choose not to use Canola Oil simply because there are so many others that I

prefer. NOT because of anything I have read pro or con. I think by now, at this

point in the discussion, everyone has pretty much made up their minds. It's in

the stores all over American and I honestly can't recall, unless I have old

timers disease, any deaths being attributed to Canola oil. If you're worried

about it, don't use it. I personally am not worried about it, it's like beating

a dead horse.

Misty,

I appreciate the fact that you took time to search for more

information about canola. The next step is to evaluate the quality of

the information and the motives of those who are providing it. The

site noted above and the others that you posted have something in

common: They're all selling something.

- The first link on the rogerkyoung.com home page is to a page about

his books for sale ($3.00 to $19.50), and the second is to Solutions

IE, a site that sells such questionable remedies as colloidal silver.

- Breathing.com offers many products for sale. In fact, right in the

middle of the article on the dangers of canola oil is a blurb and a

link to " Sleep Like-A-Babyâ„¢ Heartbeat Music Therapy CDs, " which

is not

at all relevant to the article. The link doesn't work, so I don't

know how much it would cost me to sleep like a baby :-) One of the

products they sell, however, is a video titled " Rapidly Improving Your

Breathing, " specially priced at $49 plus shipping.

- Karinya.com appears to be selling such diverse products as Dutch

chocolates and " soul-mentoring CDs from weekly tel-classes with

Oberon. " (Apparently Oberon is the " creator being of this universe, "

and he is channeled by Power, who conducts weekly tel-classes

to share his teachings; see http://www.karinya.com/obaliciapower.htm

).

The articles on all the sites are poorly referenced, if at all. The

rogerkyoung.com article contains brief excerpts from studies but

provides no list of references, and some of the information they quote

is questionable at best, such as allusions to " published research

papers by Enig, Ph.D. that refutes all the establishment

propaganda condemning saturated fats. " Who is Enig, and why would

I take her word over that of the American Medical Association?

Snopes.com, on the other hand, provides six complete references for

its article refuting the horror stories about canola, including

author, title, publisher, and pages cited. The site is not selling

anything as far as I can tell, although they could make a few dollars

if you click through to Amazon.com from their books page and actually

buy a book.

If you do another Google search, this time on canola scare stories,

you will get a different selection of websites. A couple of good

articles are at

http://calcium.tamu.edu/Mickey/newsletters/Volume_3_No_1.html and

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blcanola.htm?terms=canola (first

of three pages).

My purpose here is not to try to convince you to use canola (I prefer

sunflower oil myself). I am simply suggesting that you try to think

more critically about the information you read on the Internet and

even in the local paper, especially when it is as sensational as the

canola scare stories. Particularly when searching for information on

the Internet, it's a good idea to look closely to see if the same

statements are repeated on multiple pages. If this is the case, it's

likely that all the sites got their info from the same original source

and didn't look any further.

I believe I will bow out of the canola debate at this point.

Roxanne---ty for your comment on canola oil but i still stand by these

articles and i have more articles as well!!! Im not going to debate this

subject to exhaustion~but I choose not to use it because of what I have

read and thats it! everyone has an opinion and I respects it100%!!!

What I dont respect is people personaly e-mailing me and purposely being

rude and extremely nasty(not you) ! This person knows who she is and

quite frankly i have had it with this woman. she has no right to call me

names, judge me,swear at me etc; I will not tolerate that from anyone!

Thank you again for your informative e-mail i did respect what you had

to say! *hugs* Misty

I don't see any reason why canola oil can't play a part in a balanced diet,

or even in my body products. Canola falls into the same category as soy in

my book. They get hyped as cure-alls for the world's ills and once they

start taking over the market, here come the horror stories! It seems like

everybody but me was ordering egg white omelets, and now it turns out that

the yolks are full of omega-3 and you really need them. Granted, canola is

genetically engineered, but then so are a lot of other everyday things,

probably most of the plants in your yard.

I like this article:

" Research causes cancer in lab rats. "
