That sounds like a liver or gall bladder issue not iodine. I have not seen anyone post that reaction.

effects of too much Iodoral?

I've been taking 100 mg of Iodoral for 2 or 3 months. Around Thanksgiving I began to have some upper GI distress off and on. Then about 12 days ago it became very severe. I had to stop all supplements and have been able to eat very little since then. As long as I don't eat too much there is not a lot of pain, but I feel like I will be sick if I eat. Every couple of days I vomit bright green bile (SORRY FOR THE DESCRIPTION).Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic

  • 2 weeks later...

To answer my own question -

My nutritionist finally talked to me, and she says that, looking at

my list of supplements, most likely the 100 mg a day of Iodoral is

the cause of my extreme acid reflux that I have been experiencing

the last three weeks. She is very much a pro-iodine person, but she

says that this is a known side effect of too much iodine. I took

that dosage for probably 2-3 months before it got so terribly bad,

though I was having difficulty for probably the last month before it

became acute. As soon as my gut is healed well enough that I can

eat regularly, we will add back my supplements and proceed with

caution on the Iodoral.

I just wanted you all to know this. I wish I had known this back at

the end of November when the symptoms first arose, so that I could

have backed off on the dosage then rather than making myself so sick

that I couldn't eat for three weeks! Now I have lost three weeks of

alternative treatment for my breast cancer by being too sick for

supplements, etc.

Wow... this is really important to know for people doing high

dose! I've not seen this listed as a side effect....do you know why

it causes this?

I hope

that your reflux problem gets straigtened out quickly. I wonder if the

iodine might have reduced your beneficial bacteria? If so, you might want

to try making kefir at home. My son suffered from reflux (he had been a

baby on many many antibiotics) until we went WAPF – at which point we

gave up junk food and began to eat things like kefir. Kefir is high in B

vitamins, and highly assimilatable. My husband is lactose intolerant and

can drink “2 day” kefir. At this time of year I ferment

bee pollen right into my kefir, for bonus nutrition. I always throw a

little powdered kelp into the blender when making kefir smoothies. That

way, you are still getting a tiny dose of iodine, and in a form that actually

is very soothing to the gut.

, thank you very much for this information. This is the first time I have heard of iodine causing acid reflux. I am curious as to what the mechanism might be. Please let us know if you learn any more about this.

I'm wondering where your nutritionist got her info that "this is a known side effect of too much iodine". I'd like to know the source.

I have started a new folder in our links where we can collect relevant info:

Thank you. Sorry we didn't know about this one so we could have saved you some grief.

I speculate this would be the same thing the Townsend Ltr

docs ran into with esophagitis - from going hypothyroid,

and what would be called in TCM rebellious digestive Qi -

stuck energy in the digestive tract or energy flow going

the wrong direction possibly due to weakened muscles(?),

rather than the normal direction of DOWNward.

this is curious b/c iodine is supposed to be the cure for poor digestion. Why not just go down to 50/75mg?

Thanks, Skipper. I am much better this week, but this is definitely

Zoe,

I agree it would be good to know the source of her info. I'll try to

ask her when I talk to her next week. I don't want to start any nasty

rumors!
