I thought a lot of health probs were thyroid/adrenal/hormonal and now I would say iodine related! the list owner seemed very irritable to me. I liked the forum and thought I had the same objectives. I was surprised when he banned me LOL.

Seriously Gracia, why?

I'm not sure why you would research that unless they've done damage to you.

Anyway, I took one dose of Cipro and felt a lot like my thyroid had crashed.

In 2001, at precisely the same time as they were talking about anthrax on

the East Coast, I had a severe cutaneous infection that had symptoms exactly

like anthrax. (However, everyone knows it affected only a dozen people in

the East, and I'm in Michigan.) Anyway, my wife told me not to read the

side effects first, and I listened to her. She thought they might influence

my opinion of the drug, as if I were a hypochondriac, and as if she didn't

always have side effects and allergic reactions to every drug she ever took.

I only took Cipro for 3 days, in the middle of six weeks of Augmentin. It

did bring the swelling in my arm down considerably, which Augmentin had

failed to do, it was powerful. But, when I did look up the side effects

and it talked about " pressure on the brain " I understood why I felt that

way. Would have understood sooner, but I'd been hit in the nose and assumed

that caused the pressure I was feeling.

The thyroid crash it causes is messing with it in the liver, as this

explains -

http://www.westonaprice.org/healthissues/cipro.html

Just like Baycol and other fluorinated drugs, ciprofloxacin is a potent

inhibitor of the thyroid hormone-regulated P 450 enzyme system in the liver.

Of all fluoroquinolones, ciprofloxacin and enoxacin have shown the greatest

inhibitory capacity.4

P450 IA2 prevents the metabolism and inactivation of methylxanthines,

thereby causing increased serum concentrations of drugs like theophylline

(found in tea) and caffeine (found in coffee and soft drinks), which in turn

causes excess central nervous system and cardiac stimulation. As mentioned

above, Cipro also elevates serum fluoride levels.

The liver has been identified as a target organ of fluoroquinolone toxicity

in animal studies.23 As early as the 1930s, scientists at Bayer and Knoll

had discovered that all organic fluoride compounds tested (including those

used for fluoroquinolone production) interfered with thyroid hormone

activity in liver and muscle tissue. Meanwhile, they also showed

" anti-bacterial " activity. This led to the development of many fluorinated

medications, including the numerous compounds then used very successfully in

the treatment of hyperthyroidism.24,25 A Dr. Kraft of the Knoll corporation

invented many fluorinated " medications. " When it was discovered that some of

these organic compounds had the same detrimental effects on teeth and bone

as inorganic fluoride (although much less actual F ion was involved) he even

filed patents on behalf of Knoll for use of these compounds in dental

preparations.26,27

yes, i do have some damage from Levaquin.

I had an immediate allergic reaction plus other side effects.

Then 3 weeks later, started with the ankle pain and have had other

assorted ADRs, to include weight loss and ankle/foot/shoulder pain.

Most disconcerting was finding that my thyroid meds didn't seem to

be working as they had been working for over 2 years and all sorts

of hypo symptoms started returning. That has gotten better, but I

have found on the " quinolones " forum that many hypo folks were

affected this way (due to what you explained in your post)...and

many also got diagnosed with Hashi's after taking a quinolone. So

I'm very leery of this class of drugs...and don't think any

Hashi's/autoimmune person should ever take them.

Actually, I don't believe anyone should take them unless the alternative is

death.

As for weight loss, I'm not sure why that would be caused. On rare

occassions, hypthyroidism does cause some people to lose weight (I think

because they're constipated and can't force down much food) but more

commonly is weight loss caused by low adrenals or 's Disease.

I totally agree...they are drugs of last resort.

I'm not sure about the weight loss either...but am considering

adrenal because there is some talk on the quinolones forum about

adrenal effects of the drugs...however those who have mentioned the

weight loss there, do apparently gain it back after some months...so

maybe it's a temporary cycling ADR which appears to be somewhat

common with the folks..the cycling that is. I also seem to have loss

of appetite which of course doesn't help the weight loss, but also

isn't bad enough to be the cause of it.

I do know my own problem with my right shoulder...clicking (tendon)

lasted for about 3 months, and then just stopped. Don't know if

that's good or bad. :-( the shoulder does seem weaker now. tendon

damage maybe.

I use GSE a lot for my dogs ear

infections. From what I have read there is not a danger with GSE but there was

a study that claims it is not the GSE that works but a preservative they use in

it that is what is so effective. Don’t know if anything else will be done to

dispute this claim so we will know this is true or not.

I used to

have a chronic UTI, to include kidney

infection. The Urologist wanted to put me on an

antibiotic permanently.

I thought that would not be best as overdoing

antibiotics can cause problems. I have gotten rid of

my UTIs by drinking a glass of lemonade every morning.

I also drink ginger tea in the day and never get colds

either. I don't know which one helps me the most but I

intend to keep doing both as it is working.

I have read there are dangers to grapefruit seed

extract so I don't try that.

Skipper,

You are right about those ubiquilonones (sp>). The doc wanted to rpescribe those and I said do you mind if I research. He said, [sigh] "Go ahead"

15minutes I told what i needed and what dose. And why. He concurred that Cipro might be overkill. It's for Anthrax.

Cipro is commonly given for UTI, but it's very rough on the system

IMO. The whole quinolone family of antibiotics is rough and

some claim to have been permanently harmed by them. Sometimes

though there are tradeoffs and you take your chances.

Hi, Jane,

The last UTI I had I treated with Nature's Way Goldenseal Root (has

to be the root, NOT the herbs which is leaves and flowers)...I took

4 capsules 4 times per day for 10 days, just as though you are

taking an antibiotic. It works really fast, though...you should

notice a big difference within 24 hours, sometimes even faster. At

10 days, then go to your doctor and run another urine test to be

sure all the bacteria is gone. Mine was all gone. Cool!

UTI- help, please

Hello all,

As some of you know, I'm in a struggle with this stupid leukemia.

Well, Out of nowhere (as thesethings happen) I have a urinary tract

infection. Havne't had one of those since 1983!

All I know is I started Fulvic Acid liquid minerals - called Master

Detox - three days ago and hello, falling apart. Though i felt great

the first two days. I kind of overdrank the stuff I guess. Anyone

aware of a connection?

Well, I'd like to help my body cure this thing without antibiotics.

Im just unfamiliar with this ailment.

I have cranberry juice, pure, but no idea how much to drink. I've

started using those AZO yellow tabs and they work amazingly well for

symptoms. But I want a cure.

Can anyone help me with serious nutritional support accompanied by

an explanantion of *why* a particular thing works if you know. Im

kind of suffering here and am in no position to be ill.

How long should I give it to get better, or what signs should send

me to the doc?

I hold no one responsible for sharing their nutritional opinions as

medical advice. I appreciate your help.

A good trade off would be if there's no other antibiotic for the particular

problem, and you'll die if you don't take it, then by all means take Cipro.

Otherwise please take another class of drugs, or you could be permanently

damage. Cirpro causes fluoride poisoning.

For anthrax, Doxycycline would have been better because it had far fewer

side effects.

There's always a reason for things. Why did they suddenly start talking

about Cipro for anthrax? Who wanted them to make money?

Just like the government is intent on spending 2 billion on Tamiflu, a drug

that according to its own literature makes you better 1.3 days sooner.

Rumsfeld is a major shareholder in Gilead, the company that actually owns

the patent on Tamiflu. Imagine that, a Bush buddy is getting richer from a

drug he can sell to the government. At least, he has disclosed the

ownership.

When I had a urinary track infection, my dr asked if I wanted an

antibiotic or to use cranberry capsules. I would never take antibiotics

and the cranberry capsules worked perfectly without any horrid side

effects. I think I took 3 capsules 4x per day for a week and then

dropped down to 1 3x per day. I used the Standard Process brand.

I wonder if you can take some oil of oregano for that? I mix 2-5

drops in 2 ozs of warm water and sip it thru a straw. It's potent!

It'll knock out tons of germs.

Thanks for that encouraging word. Do you do the 3 day course? Now that Ive discovered D-Mannose, I don't know if I should take the final three pills or skip them. Im so torn. I hate pills.

You all should *definitely* look at D- Mannose sites. They guarantee it will work and say many doctors even suggest before resorting to anitbiotics (if the infection is not E. Coli, which it 90% is).

Did I read this wrong? They gaurantee it will work if it is NOT e-coli, but 90% of the time it is e-coli? So that means d-mannose will only work 8 times out of 100?

I've been taking cranberry prophylactically for years, and now I'm also using homeopathic Cantharis when I feel one coming on.

I have only done the 3 day course once, that's how long its been since I had one, as that is a newer protocol, I always took 10 days, I think, years ago.

I hear ya, sister. I have one Bactrim left (took 5) and I threw it away. It doesn't seem to be curing this UTI anyway. I don't know what the deal is. But I know I woke up with a coated tongue(!) for the first time in a year. Gag. And have headches for the first time in 18 months.

Jane,

I think we'd both better get on a heavy duty dose of probiotics after this. I just started mine today. That coated tongue means the candida monsters have come to reside within your body. I've got the same thing.

Take as many per day as you can afford to buy at the health food store. If you can afford a whole bottle of capsules per day, then that's what you should take.

Old home remedy for yeast infection was 6 drops of Lugol's Solution 4 times

a day. You can find that on Hulda 's site.
