Hi Stumbles,

Whether a cochlear implant will help you or not depends on several

things. First, what is the cause of your deafness? Were you born

deaf, or did you lose your hearing later in life. Did you lose it before

or after you acquired speech? If you lost it before attaining speech

(pre-lingual), then you will have a harder time and longer learning curve

with the cochlear implant, because you don't have auditory memory for

words. If you lost it after attaining speech, then you do have auditory

memory, you KNOW what words sound like, so the learning curve is shorter.

If you have a medical problem with the cochlea or the hearing nerve,

you might not be a candidate for an implant.

What you need to do to get answers to your questions is make an

appointment with an implant center. NOT every ENT does cochlear

implants, and hard as it is to believe, many of them don't even know what

the implant can do. If you need a referral to an implant center, log

onto www.cochlear.com and they have a listing of clinics divided by zip

code. You can find an implant center that way. Get an evaluation, and

then tell US what the Dr. said.

Good luck,
