Guest guest
Dear , my name is Gilad and I'm a 22-year-old student of medicine at the Tel Aviv University. I became a CI-candidate two weeks ago. I also had a hearing test where I had to say whether I heard noises or not and also repeat words and sentences. As far as I know, in the case of the sentences they calculate the percentage of words you identified correctly. In the case of the words they also consider vowels and consonants you identified as correct. So if you said peel instead of wheel you would still get points, because combined with lipreading you could understand the correct word. That's how I understand it... I'm currently waiting for the CT scan and the appointment with the surgeon, both will be until the end of this month. I hope everything will continue to work out well. I'm learning about the implants now. How about you? What are you going to do next? I can go to the movies here because they are all captioned (English movies are captioned into Hebrew) and so are TV programs. I can listen to songs, but only if I know the words or have them in front of me, like with a Russian disk I like very much. It helps me to train the nerve and I'm looking for as many ways to stimulate the nerves as possible... I also hope that the CI surgery will help me understand people better as I'm completely relying on lipreading at the moment. It's not easy and definitely consumes a lot of forces and energy... I wish you best luck in your process. You have a lot to expect and I hope you will have a wonderful year 2006 and a thorough enjoyment with the CI after the surgery. All the best, Gilad angela glotzbach <aglotzbach@...> wrote: Hello everyone. This is Glotzbach. I went for my CI evualuation yesterday and was approved. I have a question about the results of one my test. On the test in which you had to repeat back the words. Out of 50 words, I answered 6 correctly which was a score of 12%. But then they also factored in hearing some of the sounds of the word correctly. For example I was suppose to say wheel and I said peel. They gave me 2 points for that (3 points for the correct answer) and on some I got 1 point. When the audi factored those in I had a score of 42%. This test was using a hearing aid. Then she said the " average CI patient scores range from 50 to 60%. I know I should have asked and I will, but is that based on what a CI patient answered correctly or is that factoring in getting some sounds right. I just want to understand the results better. If you consider my 12% and that would jump to 50 to 60%. That is amazing. But if we are talking about my score of 42% improving to 50 to 60%, that doesn't seem that great. If anyone would mind sharing how you did on the test using your hearing aid or whatever hearing you had left and also how you have done on them since having the CI. I definitely want to be able to understand what others are saying better and to hear my children better. There are a lot of things that I heard that some of you are doing now, that I can't do like going to the movies, listening to music, watching TV without captions, talking on a regular phone. I go on Jan. 20 to have a cat scan, MRI, and blood work done, then I go back to meet with the surgeon. Any information you can share would be helpful. Guest guest
Gilad, Thanks for responding. I go on Jan.20 for an MRI, cat scan, and blood work. Then I guess I will meet back with the surgeon sometime after that. From what I learning about the implant, I think both of us will benefit greatly by having the surgery. I looking forward to this new decision I have made. I wish you luck as well. Please keep me posted on how things are going. --- Gilad Borisovsky <gil_borisovsky@...> wrote: > Dear , > > my name is Gilad and I'm a 22-year-old student of > medicine at the Tel Aviv University. Guest guest
Hi , First of all congratulations on being approved for the CI. That is a big step. On your pre-op evaluation question I scored 2% in my left ear on that test. I was implanted on the left on 11/2/05. I just had my first post-op test and I am happy to report I scored 98%. This is in an ear that was deaf for over 35 years. This has been a very emotional journey and one I'm very glad I took. I hope this helps. Best regards, Jim > > Hello everyone. This is Glotzbach. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks! I am being implanted at St. 's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. I am really looking forward to this and hoping for much improvement in my hearing. I attended the Georgia Peach CI Retreat in early June and for the first time got to meet people with CIs, including Jansen and Portis. After attending, I was all the more convinced that I wanted the CI. I'll keep you all posted, and I'm sure I will have some questions as the time approaches. Guest guest
That's great that things went well today. I have lots of questions since I am also considering a CI. Which audiologist did you meet with and did he/she schedule you for the MRI and CT scan? You mentioned speech and hearing therapy; does everyone get that? I am steps behind you and have lots of curiousity about the whole process. Again, that's great that you are on your way. Thanks for any info you can pass on. > > Hello Everyone > > I am happy to report my consultation appt was today and out of the way. things went well. Lots of tests done and things stuck in my ears. Yuck!!! My next appt. will be with MRI and CT scan and then the Surgeon. will be having speech and hearing therapy. I hope things go well. >
Guest guest
Thank you. I went to OHSU. I saw along with an interpreter. I ahve never been able to understand spoken english or lipread. But I am told i had hearing untila ge 6. I hear noises and sounds and music but don't understand words. words vibrate and or echo to me. I joke about being a basket case. I use ASL/SEE to communicate. The appt today included soem simple questions about my hearing loss. the history of it. Several hearing tests in the booth or room that is sound proof and She uses sentences and words that I did not get of course. She put hearing aids on me which only magnified sounds. (I suffer nerve damage in inner ear) She did a readout on paper of ear drum activity and the Cochlea. I had an earfull today. did not schedule my MRI and CT Scan today. I should get a call or a letter about this. It was Audiology & Neck Surgery where i went. I looked up online and robert clark kinda referred me. I followed through and made a call and asked questions at OHSU cochlear Implant clinic and they sent me an informative packet and scheduled my first appt. which was today. If you would like their number please email me privately. If you have any other ?'s I'd be happy to help if I can. Have a great day!
