Guest guest
, I'm a loyal fan of Y & R and have been watching it for 10 years. Let me see if I can bring you up to date on what has happened so far... Devon lost his hearing due to meningitis. He now communicates through sign and is also learning to lipread. His family and friends communicate with him through sign language or a laptop computer. He has a TTY at home for phone use as well as a flashing signaling system. From what I understand, Devon will have CI surgery, but it will be postponed due to a family crisis. The days you especially want to watch Y & R are November 22nd and December 6th. Personally, I think Devon is an excellent actor and has done a wonderful job playing the part of a deaf character. When he first lost his hearing, you could clearly sense his frustration at being unable to communicate. (In many ways, it reminded me of how I felt after I lost my hearing in 1995.) Devon originally resisted learning sign, but is now successfully using an interpreter at school and in the community. I think Y & R deserves kudos for helping to educate its viewers on issues concerning the deaf! By the way, I thought Devon was the only person in the soaps who played a deaf character, but several years ago Guiding Light (or As the World Turns -- I can't remember) had an actress who was deaf in real life and received a CI as part of that soap's storyline. Guest guest
I heard about this - and one of our own bloggers even dedicated a post on her website (normally about her two great boys!) to this information. Check out Karin Markert's website - http://bionicboys.blogspot.com/ so what does everyone think about this? i'm floored - cochlear implant awareness is hitting mainstream me wonder " maybe I could benefit from a cochlear implant " Love to hear your thoughts! Mike Royer > > Are there any Y & R fans out there??? I just heard from the grapevine > that there's an actor on the show named Devon who lost his hearing. > He's considering the option of a cochlear implant. It should be > interesting to see how the producers deal with deafness and cochlear > implants... Let me know if anyone has seen the show. Guest guest
, Yes, I'm hopelessly addicted to Y & R. LOL! I started watching soaps in 1995 after I lost my hearing because they were the only TV programs in which I could understand the dialogue. As they say, the rest is history. <grin> If truth be told, the only soap I have time to watch is Y & R. (I tend to watch the 7:00 pm airing on SoapNet because I'm usually not home during the day.) If I had to stop watching Y & R, I would need *more* than a 12 step program to help me through the withdrawal. LOL! Guest guest
With product placement in TV shows and movies becoming a PITA, I hope the producers dont go down the track of selling the rights to either Cochlear, AB or Med-El as the highest bidder, to use their particular device. If this were to happen, I think the storyline would be one of commercialism. While I would welcome the promotion of C.I.'s, I believe that brand names in the storyline, should be kept generic. They might also throw a few acting lessons in for some of those soapie actors :-). Guest guest
, Well I can think of worse things to be addicted to. LOL It does seem like those daytime soaps have better spound than night time tv. But do not ask me watch soaps with you. ROFL I bet tho, its lots more fun now with two CI's. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Those who can't write, write help files. & Dreamer Doll (Guide Dawggie) Newport, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rclark0276@... http://webpages.charter.net/dog_guide/
Guest guest
Lets hope so, but money talks these days. --------------------------------------- Swimming Australia awake to IOC switch Saturday Oct 28 11:26 AEST When the International Olympic Committee announced the Beijing Games swim meet would have morning finals, Swimming Australia (SA) sharply moved to plan B. The sports body had already predicted US broadcaster NBC would have its way and the program for the 2008 Olympics turned upside down to meet the network's demands. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=156509 America is only ONE country, but all the others have to abide by the decision, which was purely made as a commercial one. Guest guest
For those not around during the day The Soap Opera Channel, available as part of Basic service on many cable networks, runs the ABC soaps during evening primetime hours. Cannot say that I am a fan of soaps, but this one may be worth monitoring! Mike

Guest guest
A few years back ER had a story line where a child was supposed to get a CI, but at the last minute, the father decided not to. Child was wearing HAs and trying to sign. If it was a deaf child actor playing the child, he was not a good signer. But he was also very young (under 2 years of age). Any publicity is good publicity, if it only gets people aware that CIs exist, that they can help people and hopefully will get folks to check them out. Only soap I ever watched was Dark Shadows (the original). Run home from grade school to catch it. Black and white. Now that we've all done the math and figured out how old I am, I still agree with , NOT TOO OLD to Trick or Treat.
