Guest guest
Hello, fina, Welcome to . You don't say how recently you were hooked-up to your cochlear implant in your post. Under a year is really not considered a very long time, although I KNOW to us it is!! I was born hard of hearing, but raised oral. At @ age 40 my discrimination of speech began deteriating seriously. Before that, hearing aids had gotten me by and I have perfect speech. I am 53 now, and was implanted with the Nucleus24C in Oct. of 2002. I have been " hooked up " since Nov. of 2002 and I still am not getting speech discrimination. It is quite a struggle and a disappointment. I use my hearing aid in the other ear to help, despite that aided ear having only 13% discrimination. I was told that the speech understanding can take a very long time - as much as 2-5 years. I, also, hear many new sounds, and that is nice. But despite knowing intellectually that this hearing process can take years, I long to understand speech now. I do go to Audio/Verbal therapy once a week, and I practive with books on tape. Having your children read to you is excellent. It's ok to try to follow along with the printed page, then relisten to small portions at a time. It's repitition, I am told, that is going to eventually help you get more from your CI. As you know, there is never a guarentee with this, and faith and LOTS of practice listening is the only way to try to enhance or your success with it. Wishing you best wishes and plenty of patience as you go through this journey. ) Jackie
