Karlie, First of all welcome. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance of the hotel and I guess you could even eat in one of the hotel resturants. We walked around and found a great Chinese place. It also depends what time you arrive. I got there in the am and made the mistake of eating breakfast. When you get there they do some of the lab work and you need to be 6 hours fasting. Dr. A spoke to me and one other patient together. A border town is not Mexico. They tend to be, shall we say, a little rough looking. After surgery we walked around the block of the hospital. Once you leave the main street it seems a bit 3rd world. The nice houses are gated and have bars on the windows. Like I said it's not Mexico! First off when I get to Mexico am I admited into the hospital that day? I know I get to meet Dr. A before the surgery to go over the details but do I meet him alone or with the other people that are having the surgery the same day I am? Do I need to bring myself something to eat for lunch and dinner or are there any restaurants within walking distance? Do I have to have my IV the night before surgery or do I get it the day of? I REALLY REALLY hate IV's. They scare the heck out of me :o( Also is there any time to tour any of Mexico while there or do we have to stay in the hospital the entire time? That's all, nothing major just a few things I was curious about. Thanks to anyone that can help me.Karlie DOB

Hi Karli

I guess it depends on what day you have your surgery.

We flew in, drove to Mexicali with Earnesto, had all

the bloodwork done, talked individually with Dr. A and

then got our IV's and were wheeled in to surgery! I

was the first to go and I think it was about 3 or

3:30PM. We spent the whole time right there in the

hospital. I didn't have anything to eat from about

8PM the night before we flew to SD.

Hi Karlie, I am sure many have already answered your questions but I'll jump on the bandwagon as well. You'll be picked up by Ernesto the day you arrive and you'll be admitted into the hospital. There are restuarants around the hospital as well as one inside the hospital. You can ask or Yolanda to show you where it's at, and believe me they made excellent tostadas...mmmmm!!! Too bad when I go back in a few weeks for a fill I can only be on liquids :(

You can walk around the area if you wish that day, but that's of course after they have done all your paperwork, you've met with Dr. Aceves about the surgery and so forth. Dr. Aceves likes to give his spiel about the lapband in a group, that way everyone hears the same details and can ask questions all at the same time. When I was there it was me and but for you it may be a few more or by yourself, just depends on who is having surgery on what day. As for the IV's you get that before the surgery early in the morning if I remember correctly. It doesn't hurt at all, in fact that was the first time I had an IV in me so I was quite surprised on how it didn't hurt.

Depends on how long you stay in Mexicali for a tour of the place, I know I didn't stay that long, so I never had a chance to see the city. I hope that Yolanda will take me around this next time so I can get some more pictures of the area. I won't mind waiting for my fill if I can get some good snapshots in... :)

Wishing you all the best in your upcoming surgery!

It's been along time since I have been to TJ but I know its a very sad to see how some people have to live. I went on a Carribean Cruise last summer and we went to Cozumel Mexico, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and I will never forget some of the faces and homes I saw. It's unimaginable that people can even exist in such conditions. Going to Mexico I am sure will tear at my heart strings. Virginia, Okay so I am going to prepare myself for the liquid in liquid out stage!! I am one who can take liquid in and for a week no liquid out if you no what I mean!! This must be the exciting stage !!!
