Guest guest
Carmen If I had to do it again I would go alone. That way you can rest and not worry about your companion. Dr. A's staff will take care of you! They are great! Virginia"carmen.c_73" <carmen.c_73@...> wrote: Hello,I am planning on getting banded by Dr. Aceves on either 6/8 or 6/15. So I guess I'm looking for advise on if it is OK to still go by myself or should I postpone if my sister cannot go with me. Guest guest
Hi Carmen, I drove to Mexicali from San Diego myself, and crossed the border myself. I'm not married, have no siblings, so I had no choice but to go by myself anyway. I had no problems whatsoever. The staff took care of me just fine. I am a former nurse and I can tell you, Dr. Aceve's staff will take better care of you than any of the 8 hospitals in San Diego I've worked in. I arrived by myself early Monday morning, and left by myself Tuesday afternoon. I didn't have any problems or pain driving the 2 1/2 hours back home 1 day post-op. Its up to you though if you want to reschedule so that your sister can be there or not. C. Guest guest
My husband went with me but I would have had no problems whatsoever going alone. You have nothing to worry about. In fact, if you go alone, you don't have to be concerned about your traveling partner AND YOU get to select what you want to watch on TV!! The staff will take excellent care of you so there is nothing to worry about. Guest guest
Hi Carmen, My name is Tammy I. and I was banded on 4/20/06. I did go to Mexico alone. I am married with 2 kids but I decided to go alone. My Husband was going to go but wasnt really thrilled about going to Mexico so I decided without him knowing to change my surgery date to a day I knew he wouldnt be able to go. I did that because I didnt want to have to worry about him not being comfortable. This was about me. Ernesto picked me up from the Amtrak Station and then he took me to the Hospital and there I met Yolanda. After all my tests Yolanda took me to the hotel for the night and picked me up the next morning for surgery. I can honestly say that the only time that I ever felt "alone" was at the hotel. Although everyone there was extremely nice and helpful. The staff at the hospital really makes you feel welcome. So if you go alone you will be well taken care of. Good Luck with your decision. Tammy I. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Amy, First of all, everyone is different. I have found the weight loss to be quite easy actually. However, I am a stickler for rules and I have not broken one rule since the day I decided I was going to have this surgery done and sent Nina the check for $500.00! I started the pre-op diet in January...almost a whole month before my surgery date. In January, I weighed 247 but lost down to 231 on the day of surgery. The very first day I was allowed to exercise, I started. I walked every day. I did some simple, slow, 3lb. weight workouts with my husband telling me what to do. But, I did it every single day...sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Then, when I was allowed to increase my exercise to a normal amount, I began going to Curves. I work out at Curves 5 times a week. I bought a bicycle. I ride my bike as much as possible. I park far away from entrances to wherever I am going. I drink a TON of water. Water is the only liquid I drink. I drink about 3 - 4 liters of water each day and I DON'T drink with my meals. I eat 3 times a day, no matter how hungry I get. Prior to my first fill, I ate pretty normal food but just very, very small amounts. I would package my meals in those throw away ziploc bowls for lunch and dinner. I used the 1/2 cup size. At lunch I would eat one of those bowls and for supper I would eat 2. If I was hungry, I drank more water but I did not eat more. I take Juice Plus supplements each morning. I lost 30 pounds before my first fill. Then, I had my first fill May 13. Since then, I have eaten less and less. I am basically eating, (if you can call it that) 2 or 3 protein shakes a day. I try to eat regular foods but I can't tolerate them very well. Funny thing, it seems that I tolerate Mexican foods better than anything! I can eat about 8 chips with salsa at one sitting but no other solid foods will stay down! I think my Mexican band likes Mexican foods!! Maybe Dr. Aceves does this on purpose??? My secret? I really don't have one about my eating. I guess my biggest secret is that my husband paid for this surgery out of some inheritance money he received from his side of the family. Do I dare do anything to mess it up?? I feel that I have to do everything in my power to make my band work. Yeah, I get tired of not being able to eat. Yeah, I am not one who really likes exercising. Yeah, sometimes I want to drink a diet coke with a little hamburger and a few fries, but, you know what? I can't and that is ok. I have learned to accept the fact that if I want to lose this weight and be healthy, then, I have to accept what I have done, work with it, and do exactly what I need to do to use my band as the wonderful tool it is. You will find that many people are able to cheat and eat things they are not supposed to eat. I'm sure I could have done the same thing prior to my fill but why sabbatoge what I am trying to do? It wouldn't hurt anyone but me so why do it? I cannot afford to have the procedure done again so I have to make it work this time. I feel great. I have told everyone who asks how I have lost so much weight all about my surgery. I don't hide it from anyone at all. I am proud of the decision I made to have it and I am especially proud of the team that I chose to help me reach my new life's goals. So, no secrets here....just plain, old-fashioned determination. Guest guest
Hi Jenni, I must say you have done great with following the rules and dropping the weight, and getting your exercise! I got a new bike for mothers day, and my dog WALKS ME several times a week. I have also noticed that your food choices have become nil along with your fills, as did mine. I don't beleive we are to be on the "Slimfast" type program for life, I sure hope not:), 3 protein shakes a day can get pretty boring. I know after a fill, sometimes for weeks, we can be soooo tight that regular food is impossible! I have wrenched on yogurt, and slimfast ( I thin it with milk now) even on creamed soup a couple times but......eventually... I can try the creamy, soft, warm foods and they work. (Most days) My biggest concern, believe it or not, is getting enough calories in with some nutritional value. How many calories are in the protein drinks? Maybe 200? That's only 600 cal a day. I would think we should be shooting closer to 1000/day to keep our metabolis m pumped, What do you think? I think some days we could go without anything but liquids, but I don't think thats a healthy way to loose it either. I have been on FASTS many times in my past diet attempts which worked but also put me in the hospital having my gallbladder removed after a 35lb loss in3 weeks. The doctors gave me hell!! It is hard to find a balance and sift through all the dieting knowledge we have accumulated in the past to see what can actually be followed with the band. Maybe a little something from each, but the one rule that doesn't apply any more is "after 8 you gain weight" so seems like we are allowed to be "night creatures" and eat late. Maybe you would be able to have some soup or hot cereal in the late evening. Food is still a necessity, we can't live on liquids forever!!?? I would really like to know what you and everybody else, think about calorie goals, and nutritional needs. I think your doing great, and doing what you need to do for no w, but don't rule food out at some point you'll be able to find that balance. Dana --------- Re: Did anyone go for surgery alone? Guest guest
//It is hard to find a balance and sift through all the dieting knowledge we have accumulated in the past to see what can actually be followed with the band.// The band is not to be used with a diet. That is why we get the band, to not ever have to diet again. You will need to change your eating habits and make wise choices when you eat but you should not be " dieting " with the band. // Maybe you would be able to have some soup or hot cereal in the late evening. // There is no rule for eating at night, accept you shouldn't eat within an hour of going to bed. Grazing at night however doesn't sound very healthy and may cause reflux. //I would really like to know what you and everybody else, think about calorie goals, and nutritional needs. // I am not sure if you are referring to the weight loss period or the rest of your life so I will give my opinion on both. During the weight loss stage, you should aim for 1000-1200 calories but not getting it daily will surely not hurt you. We all started this journey with plenty of spare calories. Fat people just make excuses for why they " need " to eat. We could live months without eating. You will not starve to death if you only get in 600 for a couple of days. After you learn to eat the proper foods in smaller portions, there is no reason you can't meet all your nutritional needs forever. 7/18/05 280/185/
Guest guest
Hi Carmen Many people have gone alone and some even said they were glad no one went with them. You are in good hands from the time you get to San Diego until they return you to the airport after surgery. Go for it now--you won't regret it! Where in Colorado are you? I live in Walden (North Park) up on the Wyoming border.
