If you want only skin cut you want a panniculectomy (removal of the

pannus which is the overhanging skin). An abdominoplasty (i.e. tummy

tuck) tightens the underlying muscle as well as removing the skin.

I just had a tummy tuck last month....I have lost 160 pounds with the gastric

by pass. Because I had good muscle tone they only cut away skin. About 8 pounds

of it... My insurance company paid 100% of the surgery. Let me know if you have

any questions....

JC,

These would be great questions when you have your first consult, as

many surgeons have their favorite ways of doing abdominoplasties and

panniculectomies. (usually only slight variations)

I have found a *great* webpage on the site for, " American Society of

plastic surgeons. " Their explanation for the Abdominoplasty is one

of the best I've ever read.

http://www.plasticsurgery.org/surgery/body/abdominoplasty/abdominoplas

ty.cfm

I'll share with you from my own experience. On 5-31-02 I had a full

abdominoplasty... pannus removal *and* tightening of the abdominal

muscles. My PS didn't cut into the muscle. He only put a, " dart, "

(or tuck) by stitching my muscle layer to tighten the area. I hope

that helps. :)

Oh... the only trouble I had was that my PS had a hard time believing

that I really didn't want my belly button. He even asked if I was

sure while I was getting groggy in the pre-surgical area. Thank

goodness that I had the presence of mind to say, only half

jokingly, " Let's put it this way.... If I see a bellybutton when I

wake, I'll be visiting an attorney. " ;-) I had my own personal

reasons for not wanting a BB. LOL

My best!

PS to pre-op people needing contacts:

My ability to respond to patient contact requests is very low, as my

fibro/chronic pain severely limits my computer time. I *hate* not

being able to respond most of the time. Thanks for understanding. :)

Oh i can answer this one..... hon....they go in there and pull

your ab muscles together and " sew " them back together with a double

row of sutures or staples or whatever they use... let me just say

this....... they make it tight did i say TIGHT???? man oh man! i

had no waist before and after i had a visible, defined curve there,

but i was sore as can be! for 2 months! it was like i had done a

million sit ups! LOL they are abs o steel, alright but because

they were not " exercised " that way, they are just smooth and dont

have even a hint of a 6-pack-- i am working on the definition part.

good luck to all

  • 2 years later...

I had a lower body lift including tightening of the muscle and I did

not have one - and in retrospect don't think I needed one. They

usually inject a lot of local at the incision lines anyway and then

oral pain medications took care of things for me.

Just my 2 cents.

I pay the extra 400? Do you think it would be worth it? How was your

postop pain? How long were you all out of commission?
