It did make my ear feel VERY full and felt rather gross when taken out, but never did I put drops in to do anything to the packing, BUT just because I have experience that doesn't mean someone else hasn't Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My first CWU surgery was on Thursday in Miami. Although the actual size of my c-toma was relatively small - it had eaten away at the bone covering the facial nerve (?) and had devoured the first two hearing bones. He was able to salvage the Stapes (for now). All in all, I am feeling OK - and am managing the pain with Extra Strenght Tylenol which has been - challenging. I have a 4 month old daughter who I am nursing - hence the mild pain killer. At this point, I still feel a bit dizzy and sick to my stomach here and there - but nothing too severe. I can't hear anything out of that ear - but wasn't expecting to with all the packing (and the fact that 2 bones are now gone). I have a follow-up question regarding packing. When my husband puts in the ear drops, they pool on top of the packing and never seem to seep into it. Is this normal? I thought that the drops were antibiotic drops. It doesn't seem that it will do much good soaking into the cotton ball I put on after the drops... Any suggestions or comments are appreciated! Where did you have your surgery? At Bascom Palmer with the University of Miami? I see Dr. Angeli w/ U of M. I recently had surgery on my right ear, and when my husband put the ear drops in my ear, I would lay on my side for about 10 - 15 minutes to allow the drops to soak in (my neck was sore for awhile as a result!), then put the cotton ball in. When I used this method, the cotton ball didn't seem to soak up as much of the drops. Guest guest Posted October 29, 2006 Report Share Posted October 29, 2006 I hear everyone talking about packing. AFAIK, I don't have any packing. I wasn't given any eardrops either. I see my Dr. on the 10th so maybe I'll be surprised when he pulls packing out but if I'm not mistaken, he said he already rebuilt the eardrum and I'm not aware of anything else being in my ear except for the occasional minor drainage. Also, I slept on my surgical side yesterday, 10 days after surgery, it was a little uncomfortable at first but I got used to it and was able to sleep on that side. I did have a bit more drainage this morning than usual but still only maybe a drop or so. Is it too soon for me to be sleeping on my operated side? What has everyone else experienced? The more serious the surgery, the longer it is left in. I have had some of it removed post-op, but some that had to stay in for awhile longer. Still to this day I have times when I can hear better than others due to the position of my head or the conjestion/fluid in my head. Weird, but true. I get days where I hear better than other days, Sometimes I have full sensation and sometimes not. I never had gel packing. Seems like that would be better than the gauze that the Dr. pulls out of my ear 2 weeks or so later. By this time it is blood crusted, dried out and impacted. IT hurts when he pulls it all out. Gel sounds less stressful. The numbness goes on for me a little over a month for my ear. The tumor was 2 1/w inches. Surgeon said hugest he'd ever done. Yet, I was back to work in 3 days with 18 staples. Now my ear is normal looking and feeling. I thought that my otologist called it a " reverse mastoidectomy " when talking to me but on the record he referred to it as a revisid mastoidectomy. Given my hearing loss, it is quite possible I misheard him!! The revision this time was to go in and clear out infection and to do another tympanoplasty. Right now, four months after the surgery I am experiencing constant clear drainage in my left ear. I see my otologist on Thursday. He has been on vacation for two weeks so I have not been able to talk to him but his assistant told me to do the ear drops twice a day as she thinks that the drainage may be due to raw skin seepage. I hope she is right. I have been using an earbud in that ear for my Pocketalker, so that is a possibility. My right ear is progressing well though and I can actually hear my husband talking to me in his normal voice. This is such a relief!
