Guest guest
Randy, I remember the incident clearly, he wasn't being disciplined for the selling of an offensive shirt, but for the peashooter incident. You were questioning whether he had a right to be there at which point I stated that his presence was a privilege not a right. This seemed to crystalize your previous concerns. I am not opposed to following a principle of due process for LPA. I was not on the board or executive committee when his situation was handled. It was during a break when you approached me in the lobby. I further agree that a person should not be kicked out just because she/he is not liked; needless to say their hygiene or choice of perfume/cologne. Davey Re: I'm all for democracy Davey, I don't quite remember 2003 the way you do: > I'm reminded of the conversation you and I had at the 2003 national convention when you were senior vice-president. It concerned Danny Black and his involvement in the expo. You mentioned that he had a right, to which I replied it wasn't a right but a privilege conferred upon him. You agreed. I hope this post clarifies my position here also. In that case, Danny Black was being disciplined by LPA for either the peashooter indicent or for selling an offensive shirt. I was suggesting that he had the right to due process. You indicated that since we were a private organization and not the government that due process did not apply. In principle, I agreed (and still agree) with that. However, since LPA is such a diverse organization and we have very few requirements for membership, we will have discipline problems (like underage drinking, etc.). While due process is not generally a requirement of private organizations like LPA, I believe in consideration of our circumstances, it is necessary - if for nothing else - the continued interpretation of our bylaws and policy manual. The Danny Black situation in 2003 - regardless of Danny's culpability - set a very bad precedent in LPA in that any officer can rally the troops and kick out any member just because they don't like them or because they smell bad. I believe we need to change this and I am interested in your views on this subject now. Heck, if you win, I volunteer to be your chief justice!
