Guest guest
I have paperwork somewhere. There is a web site. If you meet some requirements, get a doctor's note and wait, the government sends permission to disable the bags or install a switch. We also got big stickers with our permit that have to be displayed telling anyone who can read that the air bag will not deploy. We got hung up trying to get a professional who would disable them. So, I can't drive the van and have to sit as far back in the front seat as possible. Guest guest
I saw this on the Roloff's show, but when I went to get my oil changed I also asked my mechanic, and he suggested to me that I disable the air bags in my car. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding this? Guest guest
Hi all, I was in a head-on collision in 1998 on a two-lane highway. I was driving an Acura CL, and the other driver, who crossed over into my lane, was driving a 1973 Ford pickup truck. I was not wearing a seat belt. I did, however, have active airbags. Mine deployed. The combined speed of the collision was estimated to be about 110 mph. I suffered a bruised chest, a dislocated finger, and a 2nd degree burn on my nose (from the airbag). The other driver had a broken collarbone, two broken wrists, and several cuts and bruises on his face (he was wearing a seatbelt). In other words, I WALKED away from the accident, he didn't. I'm a diastrophic, 3'8 " and pretty stocky. I sit less than 10 inches away from the steering wheel. The airbag SAVED my life. I don't know if my dwarfism had anything to do with it (us diastrophics seem pretty tough, just ask lee). And the force of the airbag deployed mostly on my chest (I have a 42-inch barrel chest). I will never have my airbag disabled. So, don't make a hasty decision on this. I think each dwarf has to individually decide what is safe for them. I think I still have pictures of my car if anyone wants to see them. The front end was compacted all the way up to the windshield. My engine block was laying on the road (part of the safety feature of the Acura). Other than being sore for about two weeks (I did, like said, feel like I went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson), I suffered no permanent damage (except I have a little phobia about driving two-lane coastal highways). Guest guest
Hello all, My airbag is disconnected. Ya we bypassed the government on that one and had a friend who has an autobody shop do it, kind of an under the table type of thing. LOL Cool, I'm a criminal! I sit maybe 5 inches from the wheel if that, (I'm 3'3), and I do wear a seatbelt so I am not going anywhere. I did lean forward to see where my head would hit if I were in an accident and it was in the open space of the wheel! woo woo so I'll take my chances with that instead of getting burns from some stupid chemical in an airbag, burns or bruises??? hmm - __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I'm 4'2 " and have Silver Syndrome. I had to have my car adapted at an actual place (instead of buying the pedals and installing them myself), and when I took the car in I was told that as long as an individual was able to sit twelve inches away from the steering column, the air bag did not need to be disabled. They told me that anyone sitting less than twelve inches away (lp or not) should consider having the air bag disabled. ~Hillary Piriotessa <piri_lupin_snape@...> wrote: You know, I was told the same thing when I just recently took my Saturn in for it's 3000 mile check up. I decided to go to WalMart this time round instead of my usual Tires Plus guys, and the bloke there looked at me then looked at how small my kids are and his next response was why I still have my air bags hooked up. Guest guest
Hi everyone I have a air bag on and off switch. I had to go through alot of crap to get them to disconnect the air bags. I had to get a doctors note saying I was short and needed to disconnect the air bag. All they had to do was look at me and see that I am short and disconnect the air bag. Guest guest
I will be providing you with some web sites to check out. You can not get your airbag disconnected, however you can get a switch installed so you can turn it on and off. information brochure http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/cars/airbags/brochure.html Switch Request Form http://www.safercar.gov/airbags/brochure/SwitchRequest.PDF List of Installers http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/cars/airbags/weblist.html I do have a research journal article which I'll be distributing in my workshop at the conference. It's about the only achondroplastic woman who was killed in an accident when her airbag went off. She also however was not wearing her seatbelt which I believe accounts for her death. -Casey Hubelbank ---- JJNewSr@... wrote: > I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get the air-bag unhooked. Guest guest
Casey, I hope you're also telling my story. I was in a head-on collision, and an airbag probably saved my life. Both vehicles hit at a combined speed of 110 mph, and both were totaled. (This was in 1998). I sit very close to the steering wheel. My advice to all dwarfs is that unless you've had major neck surgery, DO NOT disconnect your airbag. Modern airbags have less pressure than the early models.
