Guest guest
Hi Bob, Thanks for your reply. I think you hit the nail on the head - deconditioned muscles. When I woke up this morning my back felt better. The pain is not as widespread and seems to be localized to that spot in the back of my hip. Guest guest
Bob -- specifically what exercises would you have done before the surgery? Ann Re: Newbie TKR Hi Carol,Welcome to the Group!I never experienced lower back pain from the TKR rehab, although it did get a little sore simply because I was spending too much time laying down. The muscles in the body are so interconnected, that it's important to stretch them all out as often as possible...Yoga is good for this.I did, however, have a huge pain in my butt...I learned that there is a large muscle that goes from the knee to the hip, and while doing my PT, I ended up stretching that muscle more than I had for the last 25 years....For what it's worth, I blew out my knee in 1980(when I was 25) and even though I'd been bone-on-bone ever since, I still led a very active life, until finally, last October, there were so many chips floating around in my knee that I rolled over in bed one night & ended up in the emergency room...I had my TKR in February!!!I am now 6 months out & still discovering muscles that I hadn't thought about in years...I even bought a bicycle(Lucy),,,And while I can ride a stationary bike for hours, 15 minutes on Lucy caused the muscles on the top of my thighs to wake up and say "Huh? You haven't used us in 25 years!"...They weren't at all happy at being woken up.But little by little, my body parts are finally coming to terms with the fact that they are all gonna be a little more active. If I had known in advance, I would have done more varied stretching excercises Pre-Op....Oh well, live & learn.Bob>> Hi everyone,> I had a TKR on Aug 1st. Guest guest
Gee I didn't have to do that exercise. I got good range of motion. I can put both knees flat on the floor. I have had both knees done also. Guest guest
Funny you mention the outside of my operated knee. It just started bothering me a few hours ago after my PT session. Guest guest
I was lucky. My extension was normal after the surgery and I didn't need to do that exercise. It was the bend I had problems with. Sherry Re: Newbie TKR Ann,Specifically, & I mean VERY SPECIFICALLY!....Everyone I've met who had a TKR agrees that the most painful rehab exercise is the 'straightening excersise'...You lay, face down, on a table/bed/sofa/whatever, with your leg dangling off & then they put weights on your ankle to try to get the leg straight...The ROM excercises are one thing...But the 'straightening excercises' hurt! So what I would suggest... & I still do these now...1. Stand, with your feet together, as if you were going to bend down and touch your toes...But don't touch your toes...Simply bend forward, arms straight, place your hands on/or slightly above your knees, and then lean down into it allowing your upper body/arms & hands to gently force your knees backwards until you feel it in the back of your calves & thighs...Once you 'feel' it,,, & believe me, you'll feel it...hold that position for at least 30 seconds...Then straighten up, breath, & repeat until boredom sets in...2. Oops, got no time for a #2 now(giggle)...Gotta run,,,drop off the dog, pick up my grown children & drive 12 hours to spend the holiday weekend with our family in Detroit.Happy health & holiday to all.Bob>> Bob -- specifically what exercises would you have done before the surgery?> > Ann
Guest guest
I have a neighbor who's a pain in the neck. Ann Re: Newbie TKR Carol,Yeap, that's the spot! You don't have 'lower back pain'...You have a pain in the butt, and also, I'm guessing, a pain in the outside of the operated on knee,,,these are the spots where that big muscle attaches to....The pain, actually, all the pains, will move around a bit & eventually 'localize' & then will ease off more & more...Of course, others may have a pain in their backs, but I never had that, & so I'll leave it to others.Bob >> Hi Bob,> Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
Do you mean that when you lie on your back you can straighten your legs all the way so that the backs of both knees touch the floor? How about flexion? How's your flexion? What condition were your knees in before surgery? Thanks. Ann Re: Re: Newbie TKR Gee I didn't have to do that exercise. I got good range of motion. Guest guest
My knees were bone on bone and my legs were starting to twist. My ROM is 130+ in both knees. I can sit with my knees stretched in front of me on a flat surface and touch the surface with the back of my knee area. It took work during my pt but it came toward the end of my therapy. I had no in home therapy. Just started with pt the day after I got home. Guest guest
Thanks for your answers. I'm glad you can move your legs so well now. I don't remember how far out from surgery you are & whether you're still having pain problems ...? Ann Re: Re: Newbie TKR My knees were bone on bone and my legs were starting to twist.
