I got multiple posts & it was through my e-mail (Outlook Express -- hey, I'm not advocating using it -- it came with the operating system). I just live with it.

Re: Multiple posts of the same message, ....

Thanks, Maxine I really appreciate your concern but I use a Mac. The reason no one else gets the multiple posts is that most of you get the posts through your email. I don't. I come to the group site to read and respond to the posts. has been acting up on the site. Whenever I click to read a message, it will tell me that the archived messages cannot be displayed. When I finally get to read the message and respond to it, the same thing happens. After trying several times, the message is finally sent. In the meantime, has recorded and sent that message several times.I hope this makes sense to you. Reading the messages at site and getting them in emails is totally different.Arianne>> Hi Arianne,> I don't want to scare you, but many times multiple posting of a > message or an email is a sign you could have a virus or worm on your > computer. We are a Mac household also and have never had problems with it. I do

have one Microsoft thing on my computer but prefer to use Apple works.

Those who use their PC for personal uses only, or for heavily

graphics-oriented work can afford to ignore Microsoft... Those of us who

work from home with our computer (as I do) haven't got much choice, purely

because Apple is often not compatible to whatever programs the clients work

with.

While I'm certainly no advocate for Microsoft, a lot of the complaints I see

on word processor and user forums that I belong to are their own fault.

When choosing utilities, particularly those involved in the OS settings

(anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, etc), you have to be very careful of

conflicts, which cause a lot of the freezes and crashes. Another problem a

lot of " average " users have is that they've got no idea what each of these

utilities or accessories that automatically go into the startup menu to work

in the background, eat up in memory... And then complain about Microsoft

when they get a message that there's not enough memory to open a document.

Few people are power users, and many who use PCs don't know much more than

how to turn them on and open up or send e-mails. When I worked in a

technical writing and educational programming house (which went bankrupt

because the owner refused to convert the programs from Apple to PC

compatible, btw), I often worked at the " Help " desk when I had some time...

And got the weirdest calls. One of the funniest was the fellow who

complained that his " coffee cup holder " had broken, so he couldn't use the

CD... Another has trouble understanding why his computer didn't work during

a power out...

As far as goes, multiple messages, message delays, receiving

answers before the question gets posted, or not receiving a copy of what you

posted happen often in most of the . Several professional

forums that I belong to (translators, word processing help, technical

writers' forums, etc.) have moved from to either Google or MSN groups

specifically because of this... And it has nothing to do with Microsoft, and

everything to do with .

Personally, I prefer to use Open Office when I can, and if there was an OS

that could support some of the other types of programs I use (not to mention

that there are few enough programs that can work on Linux or Unix as is), I

would be more than pleased to ditch Microsoft products entirely. Original

versions (X.0) are generally disasters, restarts and crashes are frequent...

But living in a competitive business sector, I can't afford to be

non-compatible to my clients...

I don't mind bashing Microsoft myself, but they're not the cause of every

computer problem in the world, even if a lot of people think so.

I love my Mac also. I have been using computers since 1993 when DOS was the

operating system. I went through 4 computers using Microsoft, had 3 hard

drives infected and burned up and finally smartened up and switched to

Apple. I have never had my Mac so much as freeze up on me. No viruses, no

pop-up windows, just good smooth usage.

I will never go back to microsoft. I don't have anything made by microsoft

on my Mac. In

12 years of usage, I have never had such good experiences as I have since I

switched.

Ariane:

Unfortunately, the vast majority of inter-compatible programs do not have

Hebrew add-ons or Hebrew support, which I need (or indeed, even

right-to-left capability and workarounds). Additionally, Apple computers

cost in the neighborhood of 2.5 to 3 times the price of " IBM compatibles " , a

cost that I can't justify to the tax authorities here, so I'm stuck.

Sometimes, to make a living, you have to learn to live with tools that are

less than perfect.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Multiple posts of the same message,

.....

You are correct that Microsoft is not to blame for ALL computer problems and

glitches, they have set their OS up to be so proprietary that it in itself

causes problems with other programs, and knowingly so.

There is no reason to continue using the Gates Gaffe's just because you work

with clients who are microsoft/windows hostages. Apple makes programs that

are compatible with windows programs. They also have Microsoft Office for

Mac which is cross compatible with windows. I don't use them myself, but

know those who do.

My husband primarily works from home in his business and I do all of the

advertising, billing, take care of the books for tax purposes, etc. and have

no problem using my Mac to do it. I do have a windows XP pro computer

sitting on another desk that I turned off because I can't stand to use it

since I bought my Mac. I am going to get a MacMini that will be usable with

my windows keyboard and monitor. That way I will have both a laptop and

desktop to work with.

If you would like the name of the programs that are made by Apple to be

compatible with Windows, just give me a holler and I will send you the link.

Ariane, that may be true in the US, but not in Israel, where I live.

The hardware and software here are subject to the price differences I

noted-- this has been checked more than once by me and by others in

translator and technical writing forums.

Re: Multiple posts of the same message,

.....

I understand, . However, with regard to cost, it used to be that

Apple products were much more expensive than their windows counterparts but

that is not true now. The MacMini for example can be had for less than $600.

The laptops are more than some windows laptops, but quality wise, a better

bang for the buck.
