Good article Margaret. I am sure a lot of clinics all over the world

are looking into this subject. By the time our joints will need

attention some of the new material maybe available. This falls inline

with the idea that you don't need to put off replacement until you are

over 60 because the technology will be improved in the years ahead.

I meet a man yesterday thru a friend who has been needing a knee

replacement. I told him to go for it ASAP for the reasons that this

link an others are developing new materials and technology. So those

on the list, if you meet people and friends that are suffering from

joint pain tell them to get medical advice with the idea that joint

replacement is not experimental and has a very successful track record.

Hi everyone. There have been great advancements in total joints over

the past few years. Total hip replacements are made of ceramic and

metal and last many years longer than they use to. Total knee

replacements are made of metal and plastic. They do not last as long,

but the quality of the plastics is improving, as is the design so they

should last longer than the tradition designs.

And some of the old Charnleys have been in people for 30 years.

My u-beaut modern hip had a useful life of 12 years. (I waited over 2 years

for the revision.)

Oh well, life is like that sometimes.

I'm thinking I want a sterling silver impregnated one next time. To cut the

risk of infection. The oldtimers all knew sterling silver was good to

reduce infection.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

This is very good to hear. I hope my surgeon used these advancements in my latest hip revision and will use them when he does my right hip when I yell "uncle" and get it done. Thanks! Pat: Total hip replacements are made of ceramic and metal and last many years longer than they use to.

I got 12 years out of mine. When I had it put in they told me it would last

30 years. When I complained to the doctor I only got 12 years he said well

that is really an excellent run. Most hips last about 10 years.

Mind you, you have to be careful you don't hear what you want to hear too.

I had people with me who can verify the 30 year statment.

I think it is impossible to believe all the promises.

I'm not keen to have more surgery. But for the 12 years when my hip was

good I had a wonderful time.
