Comedian Greg Giraldo died in a New Jersey hospital Thursday, five days after taking an accidental overdose of prescription pills. He was 44. The " Last Comic Standing " judge was surrounded by his family during his last moments at Wood University Hospital, TMZ.com reported. Giraldo was rushed to the hospital Saturday after he took the pills at a hotel in New Brunswick and didn't show up for a performance. His representative said it was not a suicide attempt. Giraldo, a divorced dad of three, had struggled with drugs and alcohol in the past but said in 2009 that he had " conquered " his vices. " The world lost a great comedian, I lost a teammate. The dais won't be the same without him. I hope he's roasting God real soon, " said friend and fellow comedian Jeff Ross, who did Comedy Central roasts with Giraldo. He said Giraldo, who graduated from Columbia and Harvard Law, helped him fight a 1993 riot charge after he pulled out a toy gun during a show on Long Island. " I had to go to court, and Greg volunteered to be my attorney as a favor. I remember we slept in his parents' basement in Queens, " Ross said. " We drove to court in a Jeep and had dirty blue sport jackets on. It took him two tries, but he got the case dismissed. He was a great guy.
