Guest guest
Dear Dr. Wagner: It has come to my attention that Emory University has recently endowed a chair in child psychiatry at the school of medicine. I am disappointed that Emory is furthering a process in which children are being viewed through an illness centred model that serves to medicalize childhood and results in the overprescription of psychiatric drugs for the precious children of our nation. I humbly request that you reconsider this initiative, or introduce significant safeguards into this effort, given the overwhelming premise of much of child psychiatry, which endeavours to classify exuberance and noncomformity, and other childhood behaviours as an unacceptable form of deviance that can only be corrected through medication. While psychiatry can be useful, the overzealous labelling of children and the attendant medication regimes required have been called into question by numerous groups working in the public interest, including the Alliance for Human Research Protection, the NAACP, and the New York Times. You may wish to review psychologist Dr. Breeding's book, Wildest Colts, to get a better understanding of the epidemic of prescription drugs that are often unnecessarily thrust on children and what can be done about this. You may also want to look at the NAACP's recent press release, in which the organization condemns the mass prescription of psychotropics to foster children Thank you for your consideration of my position; I really look foward to your response in light of the issues that I have raised. Sincerely yours, Jasmine Singh purejasmine@...
