Arthritis can be a debilitating condition affecting the joints of

sufferers, and making life excruciatingly painful.

But did you know that arthritis is a condition that effects around one

in every 250 children in New South Wales?

Today, after much lobbying from a Newcastle woman Jo , a

paediatric rheumatology service has opened at Hunter Children's

hospital.

For Jo it will mean an end to the 242km round trips for herself and

seven year old son Bayly, and an end to much longer trips made by others

from as far as the Queensland border and west to Tamworth.

ABC Newcastle was at the opening, and started this report by asking Ms

how it felt to see the lobbying come to fruition. [Play

Also in this report: Dr Jeff Chaitow (paediatric rheumatologist),

(town MP and rheumatoid arthritis sufferer) and

Bayly (7).
