Guest guest
Just want you to know that my daughter has missed 18 days of school due to arthritis-related problems/viruses/drs. appts. related to arthritis. So, we're right there with you. Thanks for asking the question, because it is an important one, and one that I've been very concerned about, too. Guest guest
My daughter is not systemic but I do not think 22 days is way numerous. Jaye missed 40 days between October and the end of February and most of the days she made it to school during that time she was late. Our school has modified her schedule and she now does not go in until 11 a.m. each day so that she gets her math, social studies, science and language arts. Even though she is now feeling much better the school has chosen to continue that schedule in the event she gets bad again. Veri & Jaye 12 poly school absences I need to know if 22 absences and 3 tardies is way numerous for a child with systemic JRA. Two of these days was due to a death. There was a comment made to me and just want to know if there is a average. I know it depends on the child but is this normal. Five days was due to upper resp infection. Others infections and viruses and JRA.
Guest guest
Last year my daughter missed 18 days of school. (all due to illness) she had numerous tardies but they were never counted because we had addressed that in her 504 plan. I have no clue what average would be. We never ran into any problems with the school. She turned her homework in as she was able and this was also addressed in the 504 plan. Once she was diagnosed, I made it a point to address this issue in her 504 plan. The following year she missed less than 20. She is also asthmatic and she catches everything. Luckily this year her asthma has not been so bad and her jra is also under control. She still has missed several days because I have to take her to her rheumatologist. She will miss when her asthma requires she be on the nebulizer or she is having a flare. This year I say she has missed less than 10 days. It should be more since we have to take her out for labs or see her pediatrician. You have to take into account there is a big difference between poly and systematic jra. Hope this helps. o Salas
Guest guest
Hi, To me that is good compared to some of the Kids. use to miss 40 days and that was too much for me much less the School getting on my back also. School's do not want kid's out no more than 3 day's a school year. I made sure I had a copy of every appointment and PT. OT went to. I gave each Teacher the Copy also. I did have heat on me to. Some Teachers were ok with it but some wasn't. Keeping Copies of this will help if you get called to the Office and your faced with Educational Neglect. This was what I was told. Once the Social Services seen my record of Copies of 's Dr appointments and PT and OT appointment's. His words were WHY is the School harassing you. Did you show all this to the School? I said Yes Sir. I told him I was fed up with it and at this I didn't know what the Future held for . He told me about the Homebound program and I went for it. was on the IEP program and the 504 program at the time also and it didn't really help. But I stood up on it. At the time I was having this trouble. My son was a perfect attendance student. I also told the Principal to call his school and find out that. lolol. But all in all spent her High School years in Home bound. She Graduated with more Credits than Kids that went to High School. She also got the College Prep seal on the Diploma. Guest guest
This does not sound excessive to me. It sounds like the absences are due to a variety of things. My daughter, a 10th grader, has had 29 absences and 15 tardies. Hers were also due to a few different things. She has a plan in place also, so that she can maintain her credit. Without a plan, she was at risk for losing her credit and for truancy. Good luck at your meeting. Guest guest
Hello, When my daughter was in Kindergarten I rec’d a letter from the county school district stating my daughter missed 20+ days. It was a standard letter that the district sent out. The actual school was aware of my daughter’s situation and understood why she was absent, so I did not have a problem. I did not file for a 504 plan. I have a feeling that the superintendent did not realize you had this plan and I believe everything will work out for your daughter. My daughter just turned 11, but had her tonsils taken out the summer after kindergarten and she is doing great with occasional canker sores, and braces next month. Jeannine Mom to , SW Florida _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Carey Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2007 10:22 PM Subject: School Absences I am a old member but do not post often. You can say I am now a " veteran mom " to the fevers. My daughter Hannah is 5 and has had fevers since birth. We do participate in the research program at NIH and Hannah has been clinically diagnosed with HIDS. Right now I am really upset and wanted to post and get some perspective hopefully from other moms. Last year Hannah started Pre-K. We took the legal steps and started a 504 plan even and there were a few bumps but overall the year went well as far as the plan goes. Hannah was extremely sick from the onset of starting school. The stress of course caused her to flare and she sick after only 4 days. She ended up having pneumonia 5 times and was hospitalized 7 times for a week at a time. Obviously, school was hard on her. The doctors don't know why her immune system reacted this way. As you can imagine she missed a lot of school. There were a lot of times when the teacher would call and ask us to come and get her because they didn't want to deal with her symptoms (fever, rashes, joint pain and swelling). Well here we are ready to start Kindergarten next week so we have the 504 plan meeting with the school Tuesday. We have the doctors reports telling them to expect a lot of absences. They assure us they will work with us and they understand the seriousness. Today I get a letter in the mail from the Superintendent of Attendance informing me that it has been brought to her attention that Hannah had excessive absences and that she will be contacting me to correct this situation. She said that she will eliminate any problems and insure that my child is in school. She ended the letter with I hope you can overcome any problems that existed last year so that you can ensure that your child is in school. I have to say I exploded. She signed the letter and followed with PhD. You would think if she had a PhD. she would know how to open a file and read the 504 plan. Now maybe I am overreacting but the tone of the letter certainly insinuated I was just not sending my child. I have not called this woman yet because I am trying to calm down before doing so. Because my knee jerk reaction is to call her and ask her is she is God or has a direct line to him. Because unless she can create miracles I don't really think she can eliminate the problem. There is no problem there is an illness to which I took the legal steps to insure my child would have a good education. Let me say I know that she has a job to do and that there are a lot of dead beat parents out there. I know better than anyone, I am part of the police force. But I also know that she should be more thorough and not send such an insulting letter without knowing the facts that are accessible to her. If she was so concerned I don't understand why she was not at the 504 plan meeting. I am sorry to make this so long. I guess I just want to know I am not over reacting to this. It has been an extremely hard year with Hannah's health issues and lack of sleep so I know I could be a little touchy. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Carey, My son received a letter last year and when I callled the principle which was quite aware of Tyler's illness. She said that is a form letter sent out automatically after soo many absences. It sounds like that maybe what your letter is. Good luck.
