seizure attack. After my second seizure attack, the dosage was increased by

another 300 mg as my body weight had increased by 7 kgs.

Now my Doctor is suggesting me for change of medicine.

I need your comments on this, do you really think there is a change for

medicatation.

Hello Mayur,

At the very outset I sincerely advise you to consult a good doctor.

I am an epileptic for the last 23 years and on an average I get a seizure or

two each year. I the year 2006 I had just one seizure.

For my type of epilepsy, the recommended cure is less tension, less physical

exertion, enough sleep(atleast 6 to 7 Hrs) and regular medication. I take two

Dilantin(100mg) capsules(outside India it is branded as Epanutin) every day just

before going to bed. Sleep is very, very important. If you are in the habit of

consuming alcohol, just throw away all the bottles and become teetoler.

I do practice what I have written above and I am only sharing that with you.

Apart from the above, there may be some other do's and don'ts.

Before I conclude, I once again advise you to consult a good Doctor.

Have you been able to determine a pattern? It would be helful to know.

Do you do any type of yoga or meditationl. I have heard you can heal a lot of

stuff like that, Do you supplement with Magnesium and B vitamins?

i too have 1-2 seizures a year.last year was 3. my

last one was 4 weeks ago and i got pushed away from my

job so to speak. no more work they say.. i dont

understand either why i keep having them. the last one

couldnt possibly be due to stress, i had a good job,

life is good. all the GOOD stuff. i am on

lamictal-300mg/day. i have had them for 8 years. some

say they are from football, but doctors say that the

inheritable seizures start around late teens. i sure

wish someone could help me out a little with some

information because this is ruining my financial life.

i cant work where i want, do what i want or drive what

i want..other than the thought of having the NEXT one,

my life is stress free.

Hi ,

In my case, the only TWO root causes that triggers 1 or 2 seizures in a year

are :

1. Lack of sleep

2. Hypertension (which, I am)

Never have I escaped seizures whenever the reason was one of the above two. My

last seizure was on March 2nd, 2006. I am hoping and praying that I will have

atleast a year without any seizure. Wish me good luck.

How long should I be taking the Dilantin(Epanutin) capsules ? Will there be

any side effects of this medicine as I grow older? Right now, I am 46 years

old. Should I change the medication or reduce from two to one capsule ? Should

I also take Vitamin B complex ? Please advise.

Meanwhile, thank you very much for all the compliments on India, Indians and

Indian food.

Wish you a very Happy New Year 2007

RT,

Thoughts: Research L-Theanine and its affects on raising GABA. I take 100 mg.,

empty stomach, in the morning and about an hour before bed. Second: I use a

product called " Slumber Spray " to sleep, about an hour before I want to go to

bed. Pure Focus Products, 1-800-819-5631, La Mesa, CA 91942, USA. I have a

similiar profile to yours. I eat all day long, small portions--I'm a grazer--and

this addresses my hypoglycemic issues. I also take Chromium Picolinate, 200 mcg,

with food twice a day. I also take 50 mg of DHEA to deal with weak adrenals and

testosterone to address other age related issues that men have--I'm 61. I want

to stress and perhaps scream at you to start immedicately to understand the role

of a man's body as we age. Men have different hormore needs than women. Women

are much more involved with looking at these than most men ever are. At 46 you

need to do some reading and get on board to act as the beginning of a program

that will balance and replenish your body's

needs so you can then think about reducing the amount of Dilantin you take.

Yes, it does have long term side effects. Most of them are in the literature. If

you only have that few seizures you might consider using a newer medication like

Trileptal. It has a better profile in terms of side effects than Dilantin.

However, it still does have many possible side effects---it depends on the

person. It is a newer drug and there fore the long term effects are still in

question. Dilantin has been around for years and was developed as an alternative

to Phenobarbatol. The later was discovered to stop seizures but has many side

effects that are greater than Dilantin--heavy sedation being one of them. I

would also suggest that you become a member of Life Extension. Their research

materials are excellent. Their Epilepsy protocol is sane and informative and

very much directed to you. Please read about Omaga 3 fish oils and etc. There

was a very preliminary study done recently that showed

that taking a compound with these oils was as effective as Tegretol. You can

get this information on Epilepsy.com--I believe. The follow up study--larger

group etc--is being done by a Neurologist from Harvard--I believe--and the

results will probably be available within six months. You will know the site

when you see his smiling face with a beard. The idea here is to forget the

Dilantin reduction until you address the many other growth and balancing factors

that are ;probably contributing to have seizures in the first place. You are

very lucky that you only have one or two a year and that you have identified the

triggers. Work on the triggers first.

And there you go--have I pontificated enough for you?

By the way--being from India--where is meditation in your program? Check out

Amazon under the name Synchronicity--not the band stuff--but the CDs from a man

named MC. Cannon (Master ). " In all, Synchronicity soundtracks deliver

easy access to states of awareness traditionally achieved only with many years

of disciplined practice...meditation sondtrack includes Synchronicity techology

in the Alpha range, which delivers a precision state of light meditation when

used with stereo headphones.... " I have used the music from this man for over 20

years and it has become a subconscious method for me to rely on to steady me and

has become my internal friend who comes out at the funniest times. On more than

one occasions the local laundramat folks have looked at me and wondered what I

was doing with all those low tonal sounds that seem to taking me some where

else. It is a good organization that was started by who traveled with

Mukananda from about eight years before

returning to the US. At one time I listened to one of his tapes before I went

to bed every night for years. This stuff works. It helps balance your brain

functioning. At least that is my experience.

Best Wishes,

Hi Rajkumar:

The vitamins have made a world of difference on me. I highly recommend that you

do the b-50, magnesium, multivitamin, drink lots of water, no dairy products,

regular exercise, lots of sleep, everyday exposure to sunshine etc.

congratulations, at least you know that you can avoid seizures by avoiding to

much stress and lack of sleep. The B vit. will help a lot with stress and and

magnesium will help you sleep if you take it at night. Some spices exite my

brain and lower my threshold for seizures. (chilis or hot peppers).

I don't take medication. The vits are enough. I am also working on improving

my digestion and cleansing my colon. I cleaned my liver. I don't eat red meat

or dairy products, (paneer did not cause me seizures in India neither the

yougurt)

Any ideas why? Red meat makes me angry and explosive. Are you vegetarian?

What is the hypertension about? meditation?

I don't know about dilantin because I only took meds for a few months and

started researching natural ways of stopping the seizures. I learned a lot from

this group. There are some really dedicated people here.

Good Luck,

Have you been able to determine a pattern? It would be helful to know.

Do you do any type of yoga or meditationl. I have heard you can heal a lot of

stuff like that, Do you supplement with Magnesium and B vitamins?

I just came back from India. I love your country, your people and your food!

Thanks,

Regards

Rajkumar

Hi,

I'm Mayur, 28 yrs and an Epileptic patient from past 9 months. I was on a

medicine called Olptal OD - 900 mg (Oxcarbazepine) from past 9 months. I was

seizuere free for past 6 months , but suddenly from past 2-3 months i had 2

seizure attack. After my second seizure attack, the dosage was increased by

another 300 mg as my body weight had increased by 7 kgs.

Now my Doctor is suggesting me for change of medicine.

I need your comments on this, do you really think there is a change for

medicatation.

Thanks in advance,

Mayur.
