Hi Debi. In the world of liver enzymes these are still relatively low numbers. My daughter had liver enzyme problems earlier this year due to Salsalate. According to my daughter's ped rheumy they aren't considered elevated, enough to do anything about, until they are 3 times normal. My daughter's went from normal for every test she had ever had, for liver function, to 5 times normal the first month after starting the Salsalate. We stopped the Salsalate and tested her blood until it returned to normal. We reintroduced the Salsalate and retested and her ALT was already up over 200 after only 1 week. I would keep an eye on it. but I don't think you have to do anything different at her current levels. Good luck, Kim

Hi Debi,

Yes them stair stepping can be bothersome but let me reassure you those are not bad results. There likely will be more monitoring like you are doing but at this point there likely will be no med changes. The liver is an amazing organ that does so much for us with purifying the body. The results can be horrendous and it still works quite efficiently. My husband numbers run in the 600-800s and up and you would never know it. Also norms are based on the average population who typically are healthy and drug free. So, I wouldn't panic too much. Sounds like your doc is doing a good job of watching the levels. You may need to do some dose reduction to keep things in check which hopefully will not cause any flares. Let us know how her tests go and what the doc says. It always interests me to see what the various docs do about med changes etc. Best of luck that this will resolve itself on its own.

Debi:Interestingly, my Rob's ALT was 47 this last week. Again, not to worry. However, it was interesting at the peds office, the doctor remarked that a slight elevation in ALT is indicative of a growth spurt. I'd never heard that before! and Rob 16 Spondy

I was once told by my daughters ped rheumy that anything under 100 was

" normal " for a short time when the person is on mtx.

Hello Bee and Happy Birthday to you!!

A couple of weeks ago I told you that my blood tests showed my liver enzymes

elevated and that my natural dr wanted me to use milk thistle. You suggested

using milk thistle tea, which I've been doing for about a week. The first

couple of days I only had the tea once, the last 5 days, twice a day.

Fatigue and brain fog has been much greater the last three days. I'm thinking

it might be due to the milk thistle cleansing my liver and causing it to dump

more toxins. I'm wondering if I should not bother with the milk thistle and

just not worry about the elevated enzymes since they tend to elevate anyway with

all the cleansing happening? I do coffee enemas, not as often as you suggest

due to circumstances at home. I think it has been 2 weeks since the last one,

and I plan on doing one tomorrow.

My son gets elevated liver enzymes once in a while. They are usually

repeated in 2 weeks. Sometimes being sick with a bug or in a growth spurt

can actually raise the numbers. For Andy, he has never had to discontinue or

take a lessened amount of medication when this happens, especially when it

is only slightly elevated. I hope this is true for your daughter's case,

too.

Grant has had elevated liver enzymes every now and then as well. The rheumy is

never concerned about it because he said that it could be because of a cold or

virus. We just get rechecked a few weeks later. It has always been normal the

next time we check. I think you should be concerned if it is still elevated

after a recheck.
