Guest guest
Thanks Ellie. My sister has ciliac sprue and has had a hard time with it. Instead of the anemia I am the opposite with to much iron. They actually checked me for hemochromotosis when I first found out about my liver problems. I hope you were or are able to get all the info on foods and such. If you have any problems let me know and I will get info from my sister for you. the WV hillbilly
Guest guest
This is subject that has been brought up, but unfortunately most doctors will NOT even think of testing for CD...especially if one is overweight. I was dx with CI in 1999 ONLY after being subjected to humiliation by I believe 4 doctors who laughed hysterically when I told them I had CD. Now, mind you, I had already been dx with Dermatitis Herpitiformis (the skin component of CD) 22 years earlier, BUT the doctors took one look at my obese body and literally laughed their heads off. It was not until I had the endoscopy in October of 1999 that the GI believed that I actually COULD have Cd and be fat. It is sad to say that there are many doctors who are so ignorant and arrogant that they misdiagnose many many people and so much damage is done to the small intestine that may not be able to repair itself. Our bodies have an incredible way to heal itself, but unless we are vigilant and proactive and believe in our selves, we will continue to believe that doctors are infallible....but by that time, we could be dead. I don't always post, but it is important that we stick up for ourselves. WE are consumers, and can pick and chose doctors as we wish for the most part. There is also the Medical Board where you can report doctors who are not up to par. I am just so angry that I had to fight so hard to " prove " that I actually did have some horrible disease. Oh, by the way, I had a hematologist who actually had the labs drawn that showed I had " lupoid hepatitis " (what AIH used to be called), but when I asked him what it was, he turned to me and said, " No one ever gets that. " Those labs were drawn in 1997, but it was not until October of 2000 that I had the biopsy that showed I had AIH... Just be certain that you all are your best advocate. Debby [ ] Celiac disease and Autoimmune Hepatitis In 1994, I was diagnosed with AIH. It took pretty heavy doses of Prednisone, supplemented with Imuran to knock it down. My last liver biopsy, in 1998, showed that I was no longer afflicted. This month, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. Celiac disease or sprue is a sensitivity to gluten which is found in many foods. It is genetic. I tested positive for the gene and for elevated gliadin. A biopsy of my small intestine came back today - " consistent with celiac sprue " . The reason I am posting this message is to inform all you with AIH that in recent years, a definite connection has been found between celiac and some autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and AIH. Statistics are: 1 in 133 people in the U.S. has celiac. It mostly affects people of Northern European ancestry. There is a lot of information on celiac and the multitude of symptoms it produces. I had no intestinal problems or heartburn or indigestion. I was originally being tested for low red and white blood counts. The tests showed that I had anemia, iron deficiency, and folate deficiency. These are indicative of celiac. I believe that my gene came down through my mother, who was anemic, unable to gain weight, and was diagnosed in later years with irritable bowel syndrome. These are also symptoms consistent with celiac. So I suggest to those of you with AIH, do some research on the internet (put celiac and autoimmune hepatitis in your search engine) and if you think you fit the profile for celiac, INSIST that your doctor test you for it. I hope that this information will help someone here. Elly Bergquist
Guest guest
Sherry, are you asking what foods to avoid for Celiac? In order to be gluten free, one must avoid ALL wheat, oats, barley and rye....which just about includes about everything....BUT fear not! There are just as many good foods out there that are healthy and those that are NOT so healthy! Debby Re: [ ] Celiac disease and Autoimmune Hepatitis I want the information on foods also if no one minds sherry
Guest guest
, I didn't realize you too had Celiac! This is getting to be interesting....now there are 3 of us who have CD and AIH! Debby Re: [ ] Celiac disease and Autoimmune Hepatitis Please email me privately so we don't bother anyone not interested in the gluten wheat free foods. If it is all right to post on the site I will be glad to. bsmyers3999@...

Guest guest
Hi Everyone, There are several different sites on the Internet that have great information regarding Celiac disease..such as: http://glutensolutions.com/medial.htm; http://www.celiac.org/about.htm ; http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000233.htm; http://www.gluten.net/diagnosis.asp; http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_11630.html I was also diagnosed with Celiac after being diagnosed with AIH. I believe there are several of us with AIH that also have Celiac and other autoimmune disorders. Going on the gluten free diet really helped me!! Guest guest
Yes, this is VERY interesting....it is more common than one suspects AND more common than doctors are willing to check....very very sad. Guest guest
Scarey, isn't it? I truly believe that the CD irritated the liver...and that had the CD been dx earlier, that no liver problem would have developed. debismashni@... wrote: Make that four people with Celiac and AIH ...I was diagnosed with Celiac 2 years ago, while I was in the hospital with unexplained elevated liver enzymes. Guest guest
Hi ...I am doing OK for the most part. I am still trying to completely heal from the back surgery. I still have kept off the 75 pounds and am happy about that. The bad thing is that it hurts sometimes badly...so badly that I have been back on the oxycontin for the pain at night. My feet are numb, and I really think that part of the problem is that I have been working out with higher weights and that could be putting pressure on my back. The surgeon told me that it owuld take one year for the muscles to completely heal. So, if it continues next week, I think that I will call the surgeon's office and see if I can get in...oh well...but at least I am still working and that is importnat to me. Thanks for asking. Guest guest
Sorry you are still having problems but am real glad that you continue to lose weight. The heavier weights could be the problem, maybe you should go back to lower ones for awhile. Happy you are continuieng to keep working. I haven't worked for awhile and I miss it. Have a good day
