Hi ,

I recently started taking Milk thistle as I was concerned about potential

liver problems, anyway, I started having severe indigestion from it and had

to stop. Anyone know how to take this so it won't hurt me? I can't take

calcium for the same reason, long before I ever heard the word Lyme, I had

trouble taking any vitamins. I am currently on Iberet Folic, and that seems

to be OK for me.

Hugs,

Marta

Hello:

I appreciate the suggestion....but unfortunately I cannot tolerate

Milk Thistle. I developed a severe itching and stomach upset

when I tried to take it several times. I would be willing to

try something else....I will try anything once!

Thanks,

Hi Janelle,

I just posted this to you in a different note, but I will post it on this one

as well. I take it 3 times a day when I am not feeling well. I get the best

results with that. also, my last one I take right at bedtime. This seems to

help me get going in the morning better.

Dear Leona:

That was about how much it cost when I looked into it, too. Some others in

the group have found it cheaper.

Hi again:

I just want to amend my post about milk thistle. Although I looked into it

and priced it, I never actually took it.

What dosage of milk thistle does someone take, and how often? Thanks

Dear ,

I take Silymarin Milk Thistle, 1000 mg, 1 or 2 softgels a day.

It is by Nature's Bounty, HerbalSure Extracts, and I order mine online.

The company will give you several online sources if you ask.

The prices are the best of any brand/dosage I've found.

Hugs,

a Aida

Re: [ ] milk thistle

Thanks for the info a Aida. I went to Natures Bounty site and saw it there, but do you order from that site? I didn't see anywhere to order.

The human spirit is stronger than anything that canhappen to it.

Hi ,

NaturesBounty site will tell you other sites to contact to order it.

They no longer take direct orders, but there are at least 4 other sites that will take orders via internet.

I get mine from CVS, but there are others. The NaturesBounty site will tell you about where to order their products, and they have an 800 phone # too, so use it.

By the way, CVS has it thru mail order only, not at their stores.

Milk thistle really, really works to protect the liver.

Hello Lia,

Last year I drank milk thisle for a while (while I wasn't on medication), I

had no side affects, but I also found no improvements. Maybe it can do more

for you. Ask your doctor perhaps it is worth a try.

ps with some honey it tasts better.

good luck!

I take about 650mg of Milk Thistle daily. My GI had no opinion on it (judging

from the blank stare he gave me, I don't think he ever heard of it). My hept.

said it is beneficial and has been used in Europe for many decades. It is the

only herb he is allowing me to take. It has no contraindications and it has

never been proven to be harmful in any way. Is it helping me? That I don't know,

but I figure it can't hurt.

According to the German medical study on the effectiveness of Milk

Thistle, the study group took 600 mg/day of pure silymarin.

I know that I have the study in one of my computers, so I have to

find it.

Costco.com is out of Milk Thistle, and when they restock, it will

appear on their web site again.

Amber,

What I learned about milk thistle from support group at the hospital this

week. They have no knowledge of it being good for you or not. The

nutritionist told us that they won't take a patient off of it if they come

in. But they ask not to take it. Your liver is sick and you are contradicting

your health by taking herbs and pharmaceutical meds. Personally I cringe when

I hear others talk about taking herbs. I took some herbs for my COPD and

asthma I ended up so sick. I was in bed for a week with flu like symptoms and

this is before my transplant or knowing I had a sick liver. This was not the

only occasion I became sick as a dog from herbs. I myself just don't see the

benefit.

Annette,

Do you take other medications from your doctor? I do know my transplant team watch me very closely. My docs tell me all herbs are dangerous period. Which I feel very odd for your doctor says OK. Of course many docs are just not as informed about that side. My docs told me that because they have no science results to back the info. There is not enough data to recommend herbs to anyone. I am not allowed to take ANY over the counter drugs at any time unless they tell me to. Even my transplant docs have more power over my care than even my PCP doc. Don't trust that herbs make you feel better. I was taking herbs for my asthma and it made me so sick after five days and my lungs felt awful. Right after that information the media announced the Teas were deadly.

Gayla,

Teas considered to be herbs can hurt you. I think it was Dateline talked about the study that had been done and explained why the tea was dangerous. I don't have the details I am lucky to remember at all. If you like tea I would say drink tea in moderation and not every day.

I agree that it's important to keep in mind that we don't want to

boost our immune system in any way, but I think the action of milk

thistle has more to do with rebuilding liver tissue. My hepatologist

agrees that it can't hurt, but could possibly help, so she told me to

take it if I wanted to. It could just be coincidence, but I've been

taking 15 drops of the extract per day for the past month since I was

diagnosed and have been recuperating at a rapid pace. My numbers were

through the roof 4 weeks ago, and now are nearly normal. Again, it

could just be coincidence and the effect of the other meds.
