OT: antibiotics & strep infection

For the second time in his near 4.5 years, my son is on antibiotics. First time

was Whooping Cough, this time a cold turned into croup and a strep infection.

Within a day of strating the antibiotics he is much better. I did not fight the

ped on this issue...he is was very sick and she knows how i feel about

antibotics. She did tell me to give him a proibiotic with it, which i was glad

to hear a ped say. She took a culture; results are not back yet but we went

ahead and started the meds cause he was so very sick. We are also giving him a

homopathic med for the croup. No croup attacks a nap today - yeah!

Q - getting this antibotic into him is quite an ordeal. Is it really really

necessary to take the full 10 day course? Does anyone know if it is just modern

medicines belief or is there actualy fact that you must finish it? Once he is

completely better and back at preschool i just can't believe he will keep taking

it.

Also, has anyone successfully treated Strep without antibotics? I am pretty

sure my DH and I both have strep throat now, but I do not even had a doctor in

our new state. I am taking collidal (sp?) silver...will this do it? Also

using GSE and salt (seperately) as a gargle.

TIA

It is always a good idea to finish all antibiotics given but lots of

people don't do that. The concern for the doctors is that when

antibiotics are not completed entirely there is a chance the

infection is still there. Thus the bacteria will build up a

resistance to the antibiotic that was given to patient. Leading to

drug resistant bacteria. My son is very difficult to give medication

to, so sad to say I usually do not complete the whole round of

antibiotics. I don't know of an alternate way to kill strep without

an antibiotic. Hope you guys feel better soon.

My daughter got strep 2 years ago, at age 5.5. I gave her the full

10 days of antibiotics and she was over everything (including her

cough) in 2 weeks. She got strep again at the end of December. I

forgot to give her the antibiotic the last 3-4 days of the 10 day

course. The infection returned the 3rd week of Jan. and now here

we are at the end of the first week of Feb. and she is still coughing

and hacking. This time I gave her the antibiotic for the full 10

days, but because of the re-infection after the first incident, it

seems to be taking much longer to get everything to clear. She has

only been on antibiotics 3 times in her 7.5 years, 2 of which were

for these strep infections.

I don't know what is medical fact and what is big pharma heresay, but

I do know that my younger brother (now 41) had a case of untreated

strep when he was a kid. It turned into rheumatic fever, which led

to heart valve damage. Consequently, at age 16 he had to have open

heart surgery to scrape his valve. So, in our family, we stick to

conventional medicine when it comes to strep.

best of luck,

Rose

Same here, untreated strep caused nephritis, a kidney disease, for myself

and I was in the hospital with a lot of kids who had rheumatic fever. This

is one thing you don't want to mess with.

> For the second time in his near 4.5 years, my son is on antibiotics.

First time was Whooping Cough, this time a cold turned into croup and

a strep infection.

My #4 had strep infections. For the first three, I took her to the

ped and was rx Zithromax. The strep went away, but came back several

weeks later.

The fourth time, I did not take her to the ped, I just gave her olive

leaf extract. The strep went away and never came back.

So, even if you want to continue with the antibiotics, try giving

olive leaf extract. In my experience, it worked better than

antibiotics. And, if you take it yourself, it might prevent you from

catching it. My ped told me that my other kids would get it, because

it was very contagious. But they were taking olive leaf extract, and

they never got strep.

really really necessary to take the full 10 day course?

When my #4 was rx Zithromax, it was only 5 days.

Thanks Dana. His antibiotic is a 10 day course, his ped seemed to not think the

5 day course was right for him. I think I will continue, best I can get him to

take it. But try to get in some OLE too. I started taking OLE last night after

reading a past post from you and my throat was much better today. I am taking

about 30 drops 4x day. Does this seem right for an adult?

What dosage would you suggest for a 4 year old and a 19 month old? I cannot

find any data on dosage for this in liquid form. I have the Herb Pharm Brand.

And it does taste horrible. Hope I can mask it in juice.

thanks again.

Thanks and Rose for sharing your knowledge. I do think I try to get the

full 10 day course into him, it is a nightmare battle everytime though. I think

I will add the OLE when I can figure out how to get that into him. As well as

take it for me for now.

thanks again. this was enough for me to finish the course with him now that I

began it

FWIW- I just read an article about strep and here's some of their

recommendations-

*goldenseal or oregon grape root tincture, 15-20 drops in 1/4 c. water,

3 times daily for 10 days, helps prevent strep from attaching to throat

lining

*echinacea tablets (at least 900 mg) help prevent strep from forming

colonies where they can multiply rapidly

*ginger tea (1/3 t. powder w/1 c. water) can relieve pain

*if antibiotics recommended be sure to take full course, as well as

probiotics (several hours after medication, and for 2 weeks once drup

therapy is complete)

Other recommendations: garlic for immune system, salt water gargling to

soothe & reduce inflammation, calendula tincture in hot water is a

healing mouthwash, to support immune system- reduce dairy/refined

carbs/sugar, cartenoid complex twice daily for first two days can

support immune system also

HTH,

M.

Hi there,

My wife asked me to write this. I quess the question in is " Why do

we have to take anti-biotics for a full 10 days "

It would seen that bacteria are foolish enough to believe in

Nietzsche, who once said " That which doesn't kill us makes us

stronger. "

Well..., I guess even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Ol'

nutty Freddy was right on this one, at least in it's application to

bacteria.

Ever notice that the great flu pan-demic of 1917 (or there abouts)

didn't kill EVERYONE?? That's because in any population there will

be a small number that will have a natural immunity to biologic

attack.

We don't usually sucumb to the bacteria but rather to the side

effects (filled lungs etc). Given time our natural defenses can

defeat any invader, but we have to buy the time for this to happen.

When you get a bacterial infection you are treated with an

antibodotic which keeps the population of the bug low until your body

can mount counter attack (antibodies) that kill the infection, but

there are always a few bugs that will survive the antibiotic attack.

If you don't take the full course you will allow the resistant ones

to survive and produce offspring which will ALL be immune thus

causeing us to look for a stronger antibiotic.

This is why there are strains of TB, and Gonorrhea that are almost

impossible to kill.

Soooo, if you start taking the drugs TAKE THEM ALL (do the rest of us

this kindness).

As to any current problems. Colloidal silver and raw honey do real

well against bacteria. (don't give honey to kids under 2, ask someone

for an exact cutoff age)

Hope this helps.

Jerry

I started my kids at 250mg per day, but I used capsules, not sure how

many drops of liquid would be equivalent. I started myself with 500mg

per day.

Try starting with one drop. How many mg is in one drop?
