>>The changes observed in serum T3 and in rT3 could be explained by an

inhibition of the 5'deiodinase enzyme by propranolol and alprenolol and

an inhibition of both the 5'deiodinase and 5 deiodinase enzymes caused

by atenolol and metoprolol.<<

>>The deiodinase enzymes are what the body uses in ANYONE for thyroid

conversion. Not just peopel that are hyper thyroid. If they are

inhibited in them they will be inhibited in anyone else too.

Amazing! Even after reading here for months and months, I'm still amazed

at the doc's ignorance on this simple and obvious point--and on just

about everything else, too, for that matter. Thanks for the aha! moment.

btw, I sometimes take 20-40 mg propanolol to help with sleep. I wonder

if that amount is enough to inhibit the conversion of thyroid hormones?

When I was working for six heart docs in LA , I was working the front

office and my heart racing over 200 something. I used to have this once in

while when I bent down quick to pick something up or I could be just sitting

down. Well, I had it happen when I was working and my manager had a heart

card, which is like a credit card that you place over your heart area and

press the button on the back and it records and then the office had a

machine that would play it back to see what was going on. The doctor who did

the eletrical part of the heart met with my parents and I and said I could

try the Atenolol route first or have a cardiac abaltion. I had Super

Ventricular Tachardyia. My heart beats were staying in one vertrical going

super fast instead of moving about. Not the full way to explain it but I am

in slow motion lol. Anyhow, I had the procedure and my heart knock on wood

is good. I do get palpitations at times , but that is from medication.

I am not sure how that compares to Atenolol, but it only took 20MG

Atenolol to almost kill me when I was in Myxedema Coma.

Hi all,

I found some research a little while ago which I posted to the list or privately

to Val (can't

remember) which stated that in a trial with various betablockers, that Atenonol

was the

only one which did not lower T3 levels. I take a very small amount to stop palps

when they

become unbearable.

Just switched ISP except i cannot load it onto my own computer because the disc

drive

decided to die and I am using a MAC which I've never used before and really

don't know

what I am doing here.....

Hope this post gets through OK and that you have all had reasonably peaceful

Christmas.

Hi Val

Back to this subject again.

Does your post below indicate that this research is referring to conversion from

T4 to T3

being inhibited by betablockers? and that this would not be a significant factor

in those on

T3 only.

I have A PERSONAL VESTED INTEREST IN WANTING TO BELIEVE THE EARLIER RESEARCH I

POSTED SAYING THAT AT OOPS

saying that Atenonol is OK to use because of the ongoing issues I have had with

palps. It

seems to cannot get to my sweet spot without their help.

I am not certain that being on T3 only is a total fix for this problem

with beta blockers. Several months ago I tried Ramipril, another Ace

Inhibitor that is also a beta blocker and I was so depressed in 3 days

on ti I could nto stopo crying which is a sure sign of VERY low T3 for

me. I was on T3 onyl at the time. BTW ALL my palps and pounding heart

have gone now. My pulse is in the high 80's most the itme and ALL

withotu beta blockers. I had those same symptoms for YEARS. Chnges made

to affect this: Taking 400MG Magnesium at bedtime, Lowering HC, going to

half decaf coffee. PERIOD. I did have to get to the 150mcg of T3 first

adn then Lower HC sloely, but it has worked an d I htink lowering the HC

has been the biggest part of this.
