How long does it take for Plaquenil to work?

I started Plaquenil for Lupus about three months ago and so far do not

see any improvements or changes. Does that mean it's not working, or

should I give it more time? Also, when it does work, do the changes

usually come suddenly or gradually?

Thanks

I am on it too. I'm not even sure what it's supposed to be doing, but I keep

taking it. I see some good side effects from it so I like those ;)

My experience with Plaquenil was that it gradually improved things

over a period of several months. If you have gone three months with no

objective improvements, it is probably time to try the next DMARD in

your doctor's list. You should be seen by your doctor AND have lab

tests done on your blood to see whether Plaquenil has affected your RA

in ways which you haven't been able to detect. And don't forget to get

your eyes examined according to the schedule your doctor has established.

BTW, it is a drug which you can stop taking at any time without having

to taper it off to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

I've been on Plaquenil for over a year, then added Imuran about 6 months ago.

I told my rheumy yesterday, I'm no better off than I was when I first came to

him 16 months ago. That tells me that the drugs aren't working. He was not

very interested in anything that I had to say, but he did put me back on

Prednisone, it's only 2 mg a day but it might be enough. I asked why I had so

much pain when my labs came back perfect, he mumbled something about it being

osteoarthritis, then when he gave me the Pred, I opened my big mouth and said,

" why does the Prednisone work if what I have so much pain from, is osteo? " I

thought Pred didn't work on osteo. I got 'the look', and he very patiently and

slowly said " you might have a little inflammation right now " . He's such a jerk.

Anyway he also doubled my Imuran, so that might be enough. Right now I'd like

to sit without pain in my 'butt bones' and walk without shuffling my painful

feet ! Why is there such a shortage of rheumys? God was good yesterday and

kept his hand over my mouth. I know that a dr will put notes on your chart

about 'attitude' and mine was not good !
