Usually this is a *good* sign because it means the medication is causing

die-off. Dr. G usually recommends hanging in there, being extra kind and not

asking too much while they go through this. My son has been reduced to a

whiny/screaming/crying mess for several days when starting on new

antifungals and antivirals, but after he gets through the die-off we usually

see VERY good things.

Dr. G also recommends giving Tylenol (because die-off can be very

uncomfortable), which we do not use because I have been told Tylenol

interferes with the production of mitochondria for up to a few weeks.

I am sorry, this doesn't answer your question but it is interesting that

you are talking about drug reactions just as we are in the throws of

just that!! It is also interesting that he did well on Flagyl.

My daughter is on Flagyl, as I was discussing last week, for a parasite

and is totally " loopy " . She is hypersensitive to sound and touch

(usually she has been hyposensitive). She has had a couple episodes of

shaking out of fear of a noise. She is crying about everything, I mean

absolutely everything. Does anyone know how long it takes for the side

effects to abate after going off a medication?. Are we risking damaging

her system permanently?? What does Dr. G do in this situation. Does he

change the medication? We are not seeing him yet.

Thank you, it is good to hear that. It is scary to watch her in this

state. She is not on either at this point just flagyl. When they did

the stool test, she did not seem to have a problem with yeast though

that could all change with wiping out the good bacteria I am sure.

Kristy,

Thank you. I hope this is a good sign!! Have you suspended therapies

and kept him out of school in the past when he is going through this. I

kept her home from school today. It is hard to know how much she can

handle her regular schedule.

I have low IgM and frequently get strep and sinus infections. Biaxin is my

doctor's standing order at the pharmacy. It works well but side effects are

difficult.

<thecolemans4@...> wrote: Hi

Noel -

My son does the opposite - he improves and brightens

up on the clarythromycin (Biaxin). I mean, he does

really well. But that just means it's a good mix for

him. I don't do well on erythromycin - not too far

away, and I remember I refused to take Biaxin because

it made me feel so bad - sparky and anxious and

nauseas. But I jump for joy when my son gets it.

Do you have any idea what type of respiratory

infection he's getting? Like, has he been checked for

mycoplasma and such?

Could his behavior be more related to having been ill

(like possible virus) as opposed to the antibiotic?

Or is this a consistent to that antibiotic and not

others? I do think it has immune stimulating effects

but I'm not sure ... perhaps it pushes his further in

a direction that doesn't work for him? Does he

respond to others better? And last - could the

infections actually be allergy?

Sorry to not be of much help... Sometimes they just

don't help one the way they do another.

My son took Biaxin last December for a sinus problem. I felt he did

worse on it, never got better. This has happened once before so I

will strongly resist the next time Biaxin is suggested.

I do not know what it is actually doing that it does not clear up or

he does not get better once the med is stopped, but it is almost like

it throws something out of balance and my son's system can't

recover. In January, Dr G had us follow up the Biaxin with Omnicef

for 10-14 days. The term " negative overgrowth " comes to mind, as

this term has been used by a couple of doctors, including Dr G and an

GI specialist. And IIRC, in the past, the GI prescribed Flagyl!

Did your son do better after the Omnicef? Where did the Flagyl come in?

Flagyl is an antibiotic and an antiparasitic for a few parasites so

I'm going to take a guess and say she's going through some die off.

I'd just wait it out and see how it goes. I'm assuming you are

treating giardia so it's not something I would not expect to see die

off from. It can cause some tummy aches and headaches so that might

be why she is hypersensitive. Try giving her some motrin and see if

that helps.

Oh Kristy, sorry to jump around.

There have been numerous occasions in the past where I would comment

to a doctor that my son has " normal bm's " when on an antibiotic. The

response is usually " some sort of negative overgrowth " , with little

more concern than that. One time, many years ago, after some testing

by a GI specialist, and they said he had a negative overgrowth, they

prescribed Flagyl.

This past December when he had a nagging sinus, Dr G really wanted

him on Biaxin, but it did not help him, and I felt he was even

stuffier while on it. Then he had Omnicef, and it cleared it up. I

actually had to go back to my pediatrician to get the Omnicef for

him. My son does best on Omnicef, and Zithromax.

OK, this is really more info than you asked for, but 2 years ago, I

developed a female-type infection, after a course of Augmentin for a

sinus infection. The doctor prescribed Flagyl for this infection.

The flagyl really helped to clear my sinus too, weird huh?

For some reason I think Dr G said that low IgM can be

a symptom/marker of chronic viral infection. Have you

looked that up before or heard so?

My son, who is now 13, took Biaxin for various infections when he was

young. All it did was lead to G.I. issues. Then you have the...say

sinus...infection with a severe tummy ache and vomiting. It was

miserable. I had to insist that the doctor perscribe something else

for him the next time around. It was a battle for some reason but

worth the fight.

Thanks...

Noah has taken Biaxin and done really well with it. Dr. G put me on Ery-Ped long

term for strep and so far so good. I had some stomach upset the first few days

but it went away.

My son has been on Erythromycin for about three years. It definitely

made a difference back when he started. I don't know if it's still

necessary now, but Dr. G keeps him on it for the time being. I just

make sure to give him lots of Acidophilus at other times of the day.

My son was on erythromycin for a year and I have to tell you, it did

wonders for him as far as his chronic bronchitis. After about a year

I asked him if we could test drive taking him off and he said yes.

It's been great ever since and we haven't needed to go back on. He's

not a PANDAS kid but he did get bronchitis every month.

Thank you Cheryl, that is what we are dealing with, bronchitis.....respiratory

infections, but WOW what a great change, Dr. G wants to stop the biaxin when

he's better and begin Ery. Thanks everyone for your input.

The nice thing about Ery is that if you also have a gut kid, it

mimics motilin. We don't have a gut kid but if you do, it should

also help with that. Just one word of advice, next time you talk to

Dr. G, ask him about the interactions between Ery and antifungals. I

never knew about the interactions until well after we were off

(drugs.com) and I was *freaked* out. Of course, if there were any

problems, we would've known but still, I wish I had known about it to

talk to him. If there's an interaction it can cause severe heart

problems. Again, it didn't happen to my son so it's probably not

something that happens often but I would still want to talk to him

about it if it were me and I had to do it all over again knowing what

I know now.

But it was a very helpful piece of treatment.
