Welcome April. Glad you found us but sorry you're in so much pain.

Have you tried standing under the shower and letting the warm water

run over your shoulder? Some people get relief with ice packs and

others like heat. Some even will alternate between heat and ice.

What do you take for your RA? Please call your doctor and let him

know how much pain you are in. Maybe an adjustment in your

medication may make a difference.

April,

My shoulders hurt a lot too. I generally like heat on them. I take very warm

baths or go to my parents hot tub. I also have several microwaveable heating

packs. I take walks to try and keep it moving so it won't get " frozen " .

Take care,

Meredith in Canada

Hi April,

I have RA also and I swear that my rt. shoulder hurts so bad all the time.

My doctor said it was calcific tendonitis but my RA doctor said it is RA.

I find that ice helps alot and lots of pain meds.

Not being funny, but I wish I knew how to make this pain go away,

short of vicoden, which only dulls the pain. Keep talking to your

dr. I sometimes center a tennis ball between the area of pain and the

wall and gently press against the wall. Sometimes it helps. Cassy

Hi April,

I've had my shoulders injected a couple of times when they've been

really bad, and it has helped a lot. Could you ask your

rheumatologist if that could work for you?

April,

That is how the RA started for me in my left shoulder, I went like

that almost a year b4 seeing a doctor. when my hands and feet joined

in, i went to the emergency room. I was sent home with a bottle of

ibuprofen, no referral, no mention of RA diagnosis (dx).

it wasn't until another year in another state in the er again that I

was dx'd. finally saw a rheumatologist who gave higher and higher

doses of nsaids to treat the ra. of course that didn't help the

shoulders and yes the pain is out of this world excruciating, at

bedtime slept sitting in a chair for a year to ease the shoulder pain

and just kept icing it, medrol dosepaks occasionally.

the only relief without meds I found was ice packs or over-the-

counter (otc) icy hot cream and only enough relief where i could

finally get to sleep if I sat very still. what type of nsaids are

you on, are you on prednisone? Do you have pain meds that you can

take an extra dose? I have heard of the injections in the shoulder

also never had them, however. You might ask about that. They also

have pain patches like lidocaine you can apply to the area, maybe ask

about that as well.

I know this now but back then it was just me and the painful

shoulders, both are very limited, so DO get it under control and

hopefully they don't become as limited as mine are.

positive thoughts of healing to you...feel better soon.

HI April,

I, too have chronic right shoulder pain. It's severe at times, also.

A medrol dose pack I finished last week helped a few days but now it

really hurts again. I am wearing a WellPatch heat one but it's not

helping much. The WellPatch pain one contains menthol and works

well. Both can be worn 8 hrs. I also use a rice sock when I need to.

Little Salonpas patches are good, too. They contain menthrol and

salicytate. All these patches are otc. Since my right hip is still

bothering me I sit on a heating pad as much as possible. Tomorrow I

see my neuro for that.

Warm hugs,

Debbie L

HI Joyce,

I haven't tried the Icy Hot patch since it has the same menthol as

the WellPatch. The WellPatch is found in the same area of the store

and are cheaper. Since you live in Texas, you can find them at HEB

Does the Icy Hot one work for you? I use the Icy Hot cream, too.
