There are several advantageous effects of people having a fever when they have an infection. Most bacteria grow faster/multiply at certain temperatures, higher or lower temps reduce their growth. And since if they are successfully growing and causing illness, the optimal temperature is our NORMAL temperature. So when our system responds with a fever, the optimal growth conditions are exceeded and the bacteria are less successful. Also, many of our normal functions are accelerated when our body temp goes up. This includes blood flow, and the variety of mechanism used to fight infections. Net result is that our competitive advantages over the infecting organisms is increased, and we most often successfully kill off the pathogens.

If a person has a bacterial infection, why wouldn't the fever it causes of over 103 kill the bacteria instead of killing the person? K.C.

Another thing that happens when you have a fever is you don't

feel so good, and so you stay in bed and sleep and sleep, or at

least lie there taking it easy resting, which gives your body a

chance to heal itself. When you take something to reduce the

fever, you feel better and get up and do things, and tax your

body when it should be resting and sleeping to heal itself.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. We usually have to take something to kill the bacteria.

That's the whole reason we get fevers. They are not caused by the infection, but rather by the body attempting to kill the bacteria causing it.Cliff GrunstraAt 09:38 AM 12/10/05, you wrote:

Not to be nitpicky, but I personally don't agree that *usually*

we have to take something to kill the bacteria. I'd say that

should be *sometimes* or maybe even *rarely*.

Maybe in the near future it will be " usually " due to the

supergerms we are growing by taking antibiotics for every little

thing. But God help us we'd better hurry up with the antibiotics

because there are already some germs immune to most of them.

My personal experience with doctors has been they like to

prescribe antibiotics " just in case " . I know, because in the

last decade when I've asked if it was absolutely necessary to

take these, I was told not unless other symptoms showed up, but I

should take them " just in case " . Like taking a culture of my

throat for strep, sending the culture in and giving me

antibiotics " just in case " it's strep. I've had tonsillitis many

times in my life, and never once has the culture come back

positive for strep. I quit taking antibiotics for tonsillitis.

I actually never get it now because I take preventative steps if

my throat ever feels scratchy I take echinachea/goldenseal

tincture, and gargle with *strong* salt water. I was told if it

were strep, the salt would kill it.

This isn’t the site for this

discussion I know but I just wanted to say that for the last 30 years I have

not taken an aspirin or drugs when something is ailing me. I will take certain

natural products to keep my immune system up. But never take anything for an

infection etc. that comes from the allopathic area - doctors or store bought

over the counter pharmaceuticals.

Have a good one.

I agree. Many times I think we TREAT the fever instead of letting it run its course. If you take artificial means to reduce the temperature than you body can no do as it is intended and heal itself. We need to boost our immune system and HELP it run properly not take over for it with allopathic meds.

Well, I would say you are very lucky. I've had chronic pain due to nerve damage for 11 years. If it weren't for my Anacin, I wouldn't be able to do what I do. I also take homeopathics, naturals and various supplements from natural sources, but they just don't cover enough of the pain all the time, so I have to resort to other things. Without the Anacin, I surely would not be able to milk my cow, work on my gardens or do any of the great farm type stuff I enjoy. Initially, I was given prescriptions for all kinds of great drugs that I could have sold on the street for good money. But, I won't take them.

When I developed a neurological disorder that causes greater pain then I had every encountered, I went to Pat Hunter and asked for her help. Thankfully, she sent me a great homeopathic to take care of that. Again, I was given a script for drugs. Still sitting in the drawer.

But, I'm not ashamed to say that I've taken antibiotics. I just drink more kefir and kombucha to counteract the effects of the antibiotics. Maybe "usually" wasn't the right word, but SOMETIMES it is necessary for SOME OF US to take them. I'm just not the purist some of you are and I'm not afraid to say so.

Well, when you have almost died from a bacterium and had a fever of 105 and floated in and out of a semi-coma for 3 days and the only thing that saved you was good old penicillin, you might think differently.

Hi Muffy,

Here goes, as you did ask...lol. :-)

My normal temp is 97.2, with daily temp spike usually between 100.2-

104.6. and between 4-8 p.m. (central time, USA) (It starts climbing

at around 4, peaks at around 6 and is gone by 8.) In the spring when

the tree pollen is just starting to rise, I spike on the high side of

the above scale.

These spikes happen everyday like clock work, but I am still

considered to be in remission.

During a flare, I spike twice daily...12 hours apart.

During last major flare (2002) my temp spikes were 105.0-106.4. Thank

God this doesn't happen every day...any temp over a couple of degrees

above (my) normal temp, I feel terrible and also, is when I get the

brain fog thing. (Possibly frying my brain synapses!? LOL, not that I

miss them much.)

Worse pain in the keester...spastic colon (diahrrea like a fire hose!

This keeps me afraid to go far from home.)

Also, people who don't understand our disease and don't want to,

especially spouses and doctors.

Worse actual physical pain...Neck & upper back, swollen nerves all

over (from stenosis of spinal cord by calcium deposits inside spinal

canal and of several nerve roots, swelling not just in my back but

the whole nerves, from top of head, to tips of my fingers, down to

the bottom of my feet. This really sucks!!!)

Also, wrists, shoulders, hips and knees have some grinding bone-on-

bone pain from damage already done...with it being worse when my temp

is up, and my joints are always fevered...but honestly, compared to

the nerve pain, and the spastic colon, I consider the rest of my pain

minor.

Have a great pain free day, everyone!!!

Hi Karla:

To all of you who take your temps regularly or who keep a

journal. I don't know about you but my temp in my left ear is " almost "

always different than my right ear unless I am running a low grade fever and

then they tend to be almost the same (about 1 or 2/10ths apart. I do keep a

jounal and it is really weird because all of my temps over 89.9 are in red

and it is funny when you look at the page and see a lot of 98.6 for the left

ear and a bunch of 99's and aboves for the right ear. And it is always the

right ear higher than the left for " ME " . Looks like somebody took a paint

brush to it lately, lol!

WE WILL WIN

Love Y'all
