How Long for Singulair to Work??

Hi,

No longer able to tolerate months of sleepless, hellish nights, and

breathless days, I broke down and got a prescription for " Singulair "

(where do they get these stupid names?) It's been three and a half hours

since I popped the first dose. I hardly notice any improvement. My

breathing might be slightly better, but my cough continues unabated.

Does anyone know if there is still hope? How long does it generally

take for this stuff to work? I did a web search to no avail. The nurse I

spoke to one the phone told me that it works right away, but I found out

a while ago that she (and the doctor) know very little.

Thanks.

Hi Donna:

I took Singulair for years. It is my understanding that this drug is

not a " rescue " or " quick fix " but takes a while to work and begin to

control your asthma so that you use your inhaler less. I have a

feeling that your docs may have shared information that was not

accurate. Hopefully some others will pipe in. I think there must be

a better medicine for your attack.

I hope you feel better.

Hi Donna Faith,

I have been on Singulair (one tab a day) for about eight years. It does not work right away, but it sure worked for me. I also use Flonaisse (sp ?), could be same as Flovent, twice a day if I am coughing, plus Ventalin as a rescue to stop the cough immediately.

Before I was properly diagnosed, I coughed for months, lost a lot of weight and got very fed up. The Dr had my throat x-rayed, gave me the wrong meds and sent me for allergy tests.

Then I had a serious attack and a friend rushed me to the emerg. A young Dr diagnosed me immediately, gave me Ventalin and I was fine. Lots of Drs don't know that a persistent unproductive cough is a symptom of asthma. It has nothing to do with trying to clear your lungs, it is just a different type of asthma.

Give the Singulair some time, but try to get ventalin for the cough.

Good luck.

Jessie

I went off my Singulair because I lost my insurance, I changed jobs. However, I had an asthma attack the first week into my new job and I had felt it getting heavy in my chest and the thickness in my throat mornings after waking. I had been without Singulair for almost 3 weeks. However, I started again on it Monday, last week. Today is day 10 and for the first day since I started on it again, I woke up with no heaviness in my chest and no thickness in my throat. So, I have to assume that my Singulair is working again, but it took 10 days for me. ponies wrote: Hi Donna Faith, I have been on Singulair (one tab a day) for about eight years. Thank you to everyone who responded to my somewhat grouchy question. I have been

taking Singulair for three days now, and it seems to be working. I still have

some shortness of breath and a cough, but the wheezing is gone, and I haven't

had to use the albuterol inhaler at all.
