There is a good chance , call your doctor tomorrow . They may have something to help stop the diarrhea .

a quick gross question.

i'll make it quick. my potassium pills seem to be going through me mostly undigested. i've had a lot of diarrhea. is it likely my ribaviar is being wasted too.

Are you taking potassium because you are on a diuretic like lasix ? Because if it was prescribed then it is just as important to your body . If you don't have enough potassium in your cells then you can have a heart attack , so consult with your doctors . Have you tried some Immodium (sp?) that is for diarrhea I believe . Also you may want to get some more starch in your diet that will help also .

yes and i'm kinda confused about that. i had one doctor tell me i had

a lot of water weight so he gave me furosemide to pee and then they

gave me the potassium because i was peeing. the thing is, i have had

no weight loss and i feel i'm taking these pills for nothing. i never

needed these pills before.

Hi Bob,

When you take Lasix or Furosemide, which makes you pee, you lose

potassium so you sometimes need to take extra potassium. You should

ask your doctor if he could give you Spironolactone. It is a

diuretic that is potassium sparing so you don't lose as much

potassium. You should tell your doctor if you aren't losing any

water weight. He may need to adjust your dosage. Before my

transplant, I kept gaining and gaining water weight in my abdomen

(ascites), and in my feet and legs (edema) no matter how many

diuretics I took. The doctor needs to be very careful with the

dosage too because it can destroy your kidneys. My kidneys were

about to fail at the time I went into the hospital for my liver

transplant because I was taking so many diuretics that weren't doing

anything. In my case, I was in liver failure so nothing would work

anymore. I don't mean to scare you or anything, but that was my

experience.

Problem with this medication is that it can cause diarrhea , which is what Bob is having . Also here is what I found on it and it sounds like a scarey medication ..especially since in itself it can cause potassium levels to go to an unsafe level .

GENERIC NAME: spironolactone

BRAND NAME: Aldactone

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: One of the main functions of the kidneys is to retain salt (sodium chloride) and water. In patients with heart failure and cirrhosis, increased levels of a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, called aldosterone, causes salt and fluid retention by the kidneys. Spironolactone inhibits the action of aldosterone causing the kidneys to excrete salt and fluid while retaining potassium. Therefore, spironolactone is classified as a potassium-sparing medication that promotes the output of urine (diuretic).

PRESCRIPTION: yes

GENERIC AVAILABLE: yes

PREPARATIONS: Tablets (25mg, 50mg, and 100mg).

STORAGE: Should be stored at room temperature.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Spironolactone is used as a diuretic to remove the excess fluid caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease. It can also be used to treat elevated blood pressure in combination with other drugs and in resistant cases of low potassium (hypokalemia). Spironolactone is also used to counteract the effects of excessive adrenal aldosterone production. Aldosterone overproduction can occur from a tumor in the adrenal gland, or when enlarged adrenal glands produce an excessive amount of aldosterone.

DOSING: May be taken with or without food.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Spironolactone can lower blood sodium levels while raising flood potassium levels. Excessively high blood potassium levels can lead to potentially life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities. Therefore, spironolactone usually is not administered with other agents that can raise blood potassium levels, such as potassium supplements, ACE inhibitors, indometacin (Indocin), or other potassium-sparing diuretics. Spironolactone can cause elevation of blood digoxin (Lanoxin) levels, requiring adjustment of the digoxin dosage.

SIDE EFFECTS: Enlargement of the breasts (gynecomastia) is a not infrequent side effect. Rare side effects include diarrhea, cramps, drowsiness, rash, impotence, irregular menstrual periods, and irregular hair growth.

Hi,

I didn't realize it can cause diarrea. All I know is that it is

potassium sparing.

What happened to Bob's response? I was going to reply, but the

message can't be found. He asked about new livers, old livers,

transplants, and I have no problem talking about that. It's not

morbid to me. It is a part of my life. I wouldn't be here if it

wasn't for the transplant and my new liver. I won't answer here

since I can't find the post, but I would be happy to give you my

thoughts on that in private email, Bob, if it's not wanted here.

I forgot to add that I took Spironolactone along with Furosemide. I

don't know if it was one or the other, or the combination of both and

taking too much since it didn't work for me, but my kidneys almost

failed.

i deleted the question about liver transplants because i was afraid it

was too sensitive to talk about. i find it amazing organs gave be

interchanged and wondered how people thought of their new livers like

where they came from etc. i went into liver failure about 10 years ago

that was not hep related and saw a transplant doctor briefly that told

me that i didn't want what he had to offer.

if it isn't too sensitive to talk about i'd like to know about your new

livers.

I agree.

You know it is a very special gift to receive a new liver.

In my way of thinking it is the most special gift of all.

wow both together I think would be enough to hurt your kidneys and mess up your electrolytes . I hope you are better now and your kidneys are ok ?

being given the gift of a second chance at life has to be the most

treasured gift of all but to recieve it a great sacrifice must be

made either by a living donor or one that has passed.

how long did you have to wait when you were told you needed a liver?

did you have time to be put on a list or was it a matter of life or

death? if you had time to wait did you think about who the donor

would be and what circumstance would bring them to give you their

liver? do you think of them? can you donate? please tell me all you

are comfortable with.

once again. i'm not trying to be morbid but these things are new in

human history and i'd like to know your feelings.

Hi,

Yeah, my electrolites and my kidneys were messed up, but it was

caught early enough so it didn't do any permanent damage. My kidneys

are fine now. I had to go to the hospital to get my umbilical hernia

fixed first, and it took three days to get my kidneys back in shape

and my electrolites back to where they should be before they fixed

the hernia, and if I didn't get to the hospital when I did for that,

my kidneys probably would have been permanently damaged, and my

hernia would have erupted. That was 17 days before my transplant,

and I was kept in the hospital after that until I got a new liver.

Yes, being given the gift of life through a new liver is the most

precious gift in the world! I never was very religious or really

believed in prayer before that, but since then I KNOW prayers work.

I had so many people praying for me, and I was so overwhelmed at how

many people cared so much. Getting a transplant is a very, very

emotional thing to have to go through. I was teary everytime anyone

said anything nice to me, or whenever I heard someone down the hall

in pain. That just broke my heart to hear someone else in pain.

I think about my donor all the time. I feel so bad for their family

and often wonder what happened to them to cause their passing. I

wrote a letter to their family shortly after my transplant, and that

was probably the hardest letter I ever had to write. What do you

say? They lost their loved one, but I'm so blessed, and grateful to

be alive because of their unselfish gift. I would so love to meet

their family one day because they are my family now. My donor is a

part of me. Some of my tastes have changed since my transplant, and

I believe it is because my donor liked these things, and it has just

carried over to me. I know that probably sounds weird, but that's

what I believe. My coordinator said the donor's family will probably

write to me one day when their sorrow of their loss isn't so fresh.

I'm not counting on that, but that would be so nice.

I went through the transplant evaluation from August, 2007 through

October, 2007, and I was put on the list on December 5, 2007. I had

to go to the hospital to fix my umbilical hernia on December 20th,

and couldn't leave the hospital until I got a new liver which I got

on January 6, 2008. A few days before the transplant, the surgeon

told me that I would need to find a match from one of my siblings to

donate part of their liver to me in order for me to live long enough

to find a match from a deceased donor. Then I would still need a

liver from a deceased donor because of having Hepatitis C. A partial

liver from a live donor wouldn't be enough. It would just give me

more time until a whole liver was found. My brother was going to be

tested to see if he was a match since he has the same blood type that

I have, but then a match was found for me. I feel so lucky, and so

blessed!

I always wondered about my old liver. I've never asked about it, and

I've always meant to. I wonder if they at least took a picture of it

or something. I would have loved to have seen what it looked like.

I know it was very small, shriveled, and hard, but it would be so

interesting to see it. I would love to see a video of the transplant

surgery itself, of me. I have seen liver transplant surgeries on the

internet, and they are so interesting to me. It's amazing how they

can take a liver from one person and put it into another, hook it up,

and it works right away. My surgery only took 5 hours, and they say

it was a perfect fit and an easy surgery.

I love to talk about my transplant because I am so proud to have

received a liver, and I am even more proud of my donor, and the

donor's family for their unselfish gift.

Ive been a donor all my life until they dicovered hep c in me last summer. Either that or feed the animals out in the wild. But alas, no one will touch any part of my dead body for parts and pieces. I dont think anyone would dump me out in the woods to feed the animals either.

'Its against the law.' People can hunt and fish, but they cant return the favor.

I've discussed this with our children. If something were to happen to them

would they allow me to set their spirits free and allow a family to keep their

loved one to live on and enjoy life. Having lost one child I wish that on no

one but I also think that's why I felt the need to have this little chat with my

other children. I wish I could do it, too.
