How about one of those vinyl ones that you zip onto the mattress.

thats a tuff one, nathan still wets the bed the mojority of nights too, does

great during the day but night is a different issue, he wears depends (too

big for pull-ups) and them nor the good nights hold it all. all i can suggest

is a water bed so you can just wipe off the mattress or if montey man has a

single bed, get him one of those mattresses that a hospital or care facitlity

has that just washes off. also pulls off his sheets and blankets, and

has ripped up any type of vinyl mattress cover, i put one of those big cloth

incontinent pads under his fitted sheet and that usually catches what his

depends doesnt. If monty man doesnt rip up the vinyl they do have a matress

cover

that covers the complete mattress and zips on the end, like a big pillow

case. weve taught nathan this year to throw his wet stuff down the stairs to

the

basement which we have to wash most days, but he does have some dry nights,

it seems to go in spurts. And when our ancient auction baought washing

machine bit the dust earlier this spring we broke down and bought the big

heavyduty

front loaders that i can even wash a king size comforter in without any

probs, and it has a steriliztion setting too that ive been trying out,

espeically

when he is sick, but doent think it is any diffeernent than washing on hot.

this has made the washing of bedding almost daily bearable. Oh another thing

is we or grandparents are always getting him aonther comforter or blanket so

he has plenty each night if wets, he will pull all the wet stuff off his bed

and change into dry clothes and pull out his dry blankets and cover up, but

deosnt put a depends on again so if he wets again, urrg matress care on its

way. shawna

I bought a vinly full fit cover that you put the mattress in like a

pillowcase and then zip shut. They are usually marketed as " Allergy

covers " .

Me too. I have one on Maddie's bed and used one for years for my son who

was a bedwetter up until he was 13. BTW, the reason for his bedwetting

was hormonal. Once he went through puberty, he was done with it. Now I

know that's not the case for Monteyman obviously, but it might be helpful

information for anyone else who has bedwetters. We used to use a nasal spray

for

n when he went on sleepovers....depo..something or other. I forget

now.

Yes, the sleep issue is a biggie in the world of autism. We give Maddie

a 3mg of melatonin nightly and it has made a huge difference. For some it

doesn't, but it's worth a try.

Oh yea, Maddie has been on abilify for 3 years too, and that helps too.

But the abilify is for behavior issues.....aiding in sleep is a side benefit.

Hi ~ My son Dylan, now 11, had a similar problem of getting up all

night long. He's been on a very low dose of abilify now for about year and it

seems to have helped him sleep through the night better (not perfect, but way

better than before). I know some people on this list & my dad have used

melatonin, something you can buy over the counter - a supplement type pill that

can aid in sleeping. HOWEVER, meds aren't always the answer. Make sure you

talk to your doctor before trying anything though.... Good luck & I hope you

get a nights sleep soon, I know it can be very difficult.

affect appts. and school.

our doc always says to just give benedryl for sleep. so if nathan is in a no

sleep or little sleep cycle, we just ggive him some of that. I remember that

being a huge problem for us when nathan was younger now it moslty goes in

spurts. seems he has been slowing down in his teenage years here, last year he

slept most of the time, even at school, we couldnt figure out what was wrong,

but it fianlly past, and he still goes to bed around 9-10pm and gets up in

the morning for school , and will even sleep in some on weekends, or a holiday.

15 seems to be a good year for nathan so far, lol, he is talking up a

storm,(more clearer anyways) eating more nonpureed food items and watching tv

instead of his videos or dvd's over and over, and FUNNY, hes a little comdedian

lately, soo funny. , and school says he is wizzing through his reading words.

only bad thing were dealing with lately is he has picked up running again--on

sidewalk or road or parking lot, when he is suppose to walk, ive been making

him go back to the door and walk to the truck when i pick him up after

school. Today he walked a little sore, lol, he walked to the fareway (grocery

store

wehre he does his vocational) its 3blocks away and he took off running again

and fell on his butt, so slow this afternoon, lol, at least his aide is a

young one, lol. shawna

These were BAD years for us. At the time we used tryptophan at night which gave

us our first full night's sleep. There was a big dustup and it was taken off the

market for awhile but it is back on. It is also the ingredient in Nutrivene

nighttime formula (needs to be taken with out protein). Later on we tried

melatonin but was too close to puberty then and she developed heavy

bleeding...it " is " a hormone, but I'm the only one I know of who has had this

problem:-) Now she is on Clonidine which works great. Tenex didn't seem to

work...tho it too is a BP lowering drug. She got a little TOO sleepy and it was

kind of scary. All our kids react differently to everything. Some moms here can

use benedryl with success; it made climb the walls. And Risperdol put her

out for 36 hours. So unfortunately you really have to bite the bullet and

experiment (then of course you stay awake all night to make sure they are ok

from the med) Can't win LOL

Thought: How about a prescription to get a waterproof mattress thru Durable

MEdical Supplies? Just hit me that this is certainly a personal medical

need.

Thanks Becky but I have tried Melatonin and it didnt help. Its just so

weird some nights she will sleep all night and other nights she will be up

for hours. My Dr. prescribed Tenex and that didnt help either. I really

dont like the idea of giving her any meds for a sleeping problem since shes

already on enough meds. Thanks again.

P.S. I will have to look into abilify :)
