Hello Graham and May, it has been a well known fact for manydecades that

dairy products DO affect and cause excessive muccous in people who suffer

asthma, bronchitis and many other chest infections and problems.

You will find many of us oldies have been brought up on goats milk or soy.

I was allergic to soy products too, but goats milk and cheese, was all I

could have all my life.

I am 59 yrs now, and only mange the smallest amounts of dairy, particularly

milk, cheese, yet I can eat small tub yoghurt, 1/2 cup custard or small

square of low fat cheese.

but not every day, and not on the same day.

If I have toasted cheese , thats the dairy for the day.

Tub yoghurt, thats it for the day, same with custard etc.

However I can eat ricotta cheese etc /without any restrictions at all,

except I.,eat low fat versions for safety,

Fetta, ricotta ( fresh) is a great way to get dairy. And they are so

versatile for both sweet and savoury dishes.

I can have low fat( skinny milk, trim etc on cereal, but that too is -- just

enough to wet the cereal, I usually pour the milk off at the end.

I have 12 grand children, and 9 are dairy intolerant, and my newest

grandchild 10 weeks, has found all formulas, cause chestiness, so has now

been on goats milk for 2 weeks and doing great.

Besides a congested chest it often causes blocked noses, muccuous too thick.

So there has been a lot said and done in this area.

Although in the last 12 months the scientists and doctors are now saying

otherwise.

I for one know from my own childhood, my dads, and my own children and now

grandchildren, that dairy products do definately affect us, and the change

to goats milk and all the above have made worlds of difference to us all.

If you love cheese dishes, and substitute with ricotta etc, a sprinkle of

parmeson etc wouldn,t hurt.

As they also say that if you must have dairy cheese, hard cheeses are better

than cheddars.

Hope you had a good Xmas,

must go, am being nagged for dinner.

Good luck, with

Bon apetit . Great experimenting.

Sandy

Sandy,

I have read this in a book by a doctor in Denver, Colorado who advocates holistic (natural) treatments, including omitting dairy and wheat, from the diet for sinus problems. I have very think sinus discharge, and it gives me bad headaches until I irrigate my sinuses. I am going to start eliminating dairy from my diet even though I have osteoporosis. I will just depend on the calcium supplements and the new injectable drug that I started in September to help with the bone density. Thanks for sharing this information.

Hi There,

Actually, research has proven that dairy products do

not cause an increase in mucous production unless

someone is allergic to milk. It is a person's

perception that they are producing more mucous because

milk coats the back of their throat. I drink lots of

milk and never have any increase in mucous production

related to milk. Furthermore milk products are one of

the best sources of calcium which many of us need more

so then the general population because of steroid use.

So, please drink your milk and eat foods containing

dairy this is good for your bones and over all health.

Unless of course one has a milk allergy! My doctors

actually encourage milk products in addition to taking

calcium supplements.

Happy Holidays!

Calcium tabs like caltrate should be taken by anyone over the age of 40 , and dosage is also debateable, some need 600mg, others 1200mgs per day.

Sandy,

The amount of mg of calcium supplementation needed is correlated with age. Women past menopause need a higher dose since women meet their highest bone density in the late 20s to 30s. I take Citracal Calcium Citrate +D 500 mg of elemental calcium spaced three times throughout the day. Since I am high risk of fracture (I have had two fractures within the past 10 years), I was told by the endocrinologist at my first bone density test that Citracal is better absorbed since it is not affected by the acid in one's stomach. Hi , well thats what they say now, but as with everything, we are all

individual, and must only eat, drink, or take what we as each an individual,

can tolerate, without causing more ill health or problems.

Some people are not dairy intolerant but do still produce more muccous when

consumong dairy products.etc, as I say like all meds, its each to his own,

and what works for some doesn,t for others, and when trying things out for

the first time, take care, go slow, and do so in moderation.

Calcium tabs like caltrate should be taken by anyone over the age of 40 ,

and dosage is also debateable, some need 600mg, others 1200mgs per day.

Still eating all the good foods to keep balance.

Yoghurt is great, and also so versatile as with low fat soft cheeses.

Have a great 2005, lets hope we see some real positively great changes to

health of those in the group who have had a rough time this last year or so.

Lets start the year of on a positive note, with love, and thought for each

other.

A prayer for all those affected by the latest natural disaster.

Happy New Year,

Sandy

Sorry Norma, I forgot to say that I take a 600mg, tab 3 times a day.

I havent, needed to change it as sometimes, I get test results saying I have

too much calcium, so then lay off for a week or 2, but I am not in the

position of changing any meds now, unless I become allergic to.

Caltrate has suited me for many years, and its the only med really left that

I haven,t become allergic to.

I do make sure I eat well and all the right things to both balance, absorb

etc.

But I have to have all absorbed things done very slowly, cos I go into

shock, a real pain to work with truly I am ( for the Docs etc).
