Norman,

I have been taking opioid pain meds for 4.5 years. They all make me

nauseated, although I rarely throw up. My MD has written

prescriptions for several antiemetics. Your wife's MD should also

know about these, have you asked him/her? Anyway, here are the ones

I have tried:

Reglan; common, cheap, not very effective IMHO. It increases up your

gut activity, which the narcotics slow down.

Transderm Scopolomine: A skin patch, lots of people get unpleasant

side effects. But it works. Frequently used for seasickness. Made me

very anxious, hyper, and blurry vision, so I quickly quit.

Zofran: Commonly used in Hospitals post-op, developed for chemo

patients. Works pretty well, IMO. About $20/pill. This is the one I

use most.

Kytril: My favorite, because my insurance pays the bill! Developed

for Chemo. About $50/pill. I use these when the Zofran doesn't work

well.

Anzemet: Also developed for Chemo. Also very expensive. Didn't seem

to work any better than Zofran for me, so I don't use it.

I also tried many of the opioid meds because of nausea, some made

me sicker than others. Fentanyl (Duragesic and Actiq) was the only

one I could really tolerate, and it still made me pretty sick. Now I

have an intrathecal pump with Dilaudid. It is by far the best for

good pain relef with minimal side effects.

If your pain guy is an ansthesiologist then he should know all about

these. Probably there are others that I am not aware of. Of course

different people may have different results.

I hope this helps,

I am also frequently nauseated...i usually vomit two to three times a week, and

no i'm not forcing it! A tall ice cold water helps best, that and remaining a

bit on the cool side. Often when I am nauseated I get really hot and sweaty and

sitting in front of the fan helps.

I also have FMS and a herniated disc, and take vicodin, but i have always had

the tendency to feel " sick to my stomach. " OTC stuff like Mylanta and cola syrup

and Emetrol usually only make me feel queasier, although there is some

antinausea stuff that is a house brand at the Walgreens that comes in a cherry

flavour that helps somewhat, but it takes too long.

Hello Norman

It is so refreshing to see how much you care about your wife. First you

might ask her if she is constipated. Constipation can be managed by adequate

fluid intake and fiber from either fruits, grain cereals etc. If she has

been too sick to keep track of this since we normally don't give bowel

movements much thought tell her just to make a check on the calendar each

time she has one.

Vistaril is a good and inexpensive drug for nausea/vomiting. The oral

version would be preferable to the shots if you need it very often. You

might consider Compazine, Tigan, Donnatal or even Maalox with Simethecone.

Simethecone can also be purchased alone and is excellent for gas. I don't

recommend Pepto because it contains salycilic acid which is almost the same

thing as aspirin which is very irritating to the stomach.

Your wife might need to take Prilosec, Protonix or Nexium routinely for the

stomach irritation.

Levsin is a terrific drug for stomach cramps. You take it sublingally (under

the tongue) and it works very quickly.

I hope your wife is feeling better soon. It is bad enough that she has the

facial pain and adding nausea and vomiting is just miserable.

Hi Norman, I too have been having pain bad enough to cause nausea. I

have had migraines for 33 yrs and nausea is really horrible with

them. I sip on ginger ale, nibble on dry saltines and use a migraine

ice facial pad on my foehead to help with nausea. I use injectible

phenegren it does the best. Is also cheaper than some of the chemo

nausea pills. It does make me sleepy so dose has to be adjusted

according to severity of the nausea. I hope it eases up for you.

I take REGLAN for nausea, I get really bad headaches, and then comes the

nausea, the reglan wors wonderful, but you cannot mix reglan with any drug like

valium or any narcotic.
