Stay away from the sulfonylureas. If you are going to use a pill rather than

insulin, Glucophage is one that I know of that is OK, although it can cause

some stomach problems at first. Check out this website Faye. It will explain

it better than I can.

Hi, Faye!

All the Sulfonylureas force your pancreas to produce more insulin. This is

said to burn out your beta cells faster, and make you more likely to need

injected insulin. It also makes you prone to hypos, especially if you eat

something carby.

I'm on Glucotrol XL, 5mg qd. When I first started taking it, I was on the

Pyramid, and the starchy meals made the meds work harder, sending me higher

and lower on the rollercoaster than I had been previously. Since I've been

low carbing, I've noticed that I only hypo when I a) don't eat at all, or

b)eat something really starchy (rebound from the meds).

If your doctor insists on a sulf, low carb is the way to go.

Faye, the one class of diabetes meds I am so spooked about are called

" sulfonylureas " (several brand names). I think you should consider yourself

as having " leaky gut syndrome. " You certainly seem to have the symptoms.

I would like to thank you for hanging in there ... You have had so many

health problems to deal with, and you have been so stoic about them. That is

wonderful news that your triglycerides have dropped by a HALF!

Hugs,

Susie

Gee, Robin. Somehow I didn't realize you are still taking a sulfonylureav

(Glucotrol XL). Have you tried to make the switch to something like

glucophage (Metformin)? Now you've given me yet another thing to worry

about!

Hugs,

Susie

Don't worry so much, Susie! I think I've got it under control, and I'll be

back on the treadmill three months next time I see the doc, so I'm hoping

he'll take me off entirely.

In the mean time, it's low carb for me, so my pancreas doesn't have to work

much at all.

Paige,

Have you ever considered going to a pain center? I love the place I go (not

in NC). The doctor, his nurse practitioner and physical therapists are very

professional and very caring.

Just a thought...

Kay
