I would think plenty of things in a septic system could kill it! Plus,

doesn't it need a goodly amount of sugar to grow?

Oh goodness gracious.......I need some wisdom on this one. I was

*going* to start making kombucha this week, but my MIL says to

me, " That thing could get into our septic system and grow and

multiply and take over!! " We are currently staying with my in-laws

while my husband looks for a new job. I don't want to tell her

she's crazy.....but that's exactly what I'm thinking!!

Can anyone give me some info to counter this?? Thanks......

Okay, y'all......I *KNOW* this is hilarious...but I need some

scientific rebuttals SOON, cuz I wanna start my kombucha...but don't

want to upset my MIL (or risk encasing the house in a giant

kombucha, a la The Blob) I'll be in church today, smothering a

giggle, thinking about this, you watch!

I'm sorry, , I don't actually have any scientific rebuttals, just a lot

of snorts and giggles at those images. Other than thinking that the only

serious response you got (about other things in the septic system killing

it right off) made sense.

I'm thinkin' we could make a nice little film, though ... Attack of the

Killer SCOBY ... complete with rolling multitudes of little scoby's down

the street, followed by rivers of kombucha, lots of people running and

screaming and stuff. Then maybe we could have a happy ending via the

Parting of the Kombucha Sea, all the little scoby's scurrying to safety,

accompanied by a rousing musical score and lots of drums and things.

Tell you MIL that the kombucha will not go into the septic system, that

you'll just slap the extra mushrooms around some acid-loving plants in the

yard........she'll love that.

With all the (hundreds of) thousands of people who make kombucha, has she ever

heard news reports/warnings of it taking over?

not proven, but here's some things that you can use to tell her why it's

EXTREMELY unlikely this will ever happen:

1) there's never been any reports of this being an issue on any of the

dozens of Kombucha web sites i've seen (if it was, you would think people

would warn don't flush etc.)

2) the decomposing bacteria in the septic tank are already prolific and

there's so many of them the kombucha bacteria wouldn't stand a chance (plus,

kombucha is partly dependant on the symbiotic yeast/bacteria relationship,

which is controlled by keeping the culture covered and clean etc.

disrupting this relationship most likely would not result in a mushroom

growing)

3) kombucha is so slow growing, and based on the temperature in the ground

(as low as in the 40-50 degree range, where do you live?) it will probably

not be able to grow at all (this could be your best arguement)

4) new liquids are always being added and the surface of the septic tank is

not standing still, so the film would not have a chance to form and grow

5) you plan to drink all the tea and not dump it down the drain

Have you ever looked in a septic system? It sure looks like

a big scoby to me, this layer of floating bacteria etc. I'd think

that if by some odd chance the kombucha replaced the

" natural " bacteria in the septic, it'd be an improvement!

Anyway, my kefir grains haven't taken over the septic, nor

have they started growing in anyone's gut. Kefir is more

hardy than kombucha.

over the universe what about pointing out that usually waste water from

the sinks, washing machines, and tubs is separate from septic systems. It's

called " gray water " and usually is piped into an underground leach field to

dispurse and soak into the ground. Septic systems are usually exclusively

water flushed down the toilet.

Now I'm assuming that you aren't planning on flushing your scobies.....?
